RE: Shady Glen's cheeseburger
I was brought up in Manchester, CT and have been to Shady Glen many times. Back in the day, the choices for burgers were pretty much limited to Shady Glen, Friendly's (before Hershey bought them) and DC's Drive In. This past weekend, after at least 35 years, I stopped at Shady Glen for a Cburger. What I found there confirms that Friendly's--my choice back then--was the right choice.
The food was, at best, blah. Frozen fries. The burger? Tasted like nothing...no juice, no beef flavor. Frozen patties? I wouldn't doubt it. And the vaunted cheese "skirt?" Tastes like greasy Cheetos. Even worse, stepping into the place is like stepping into a time machine...nothing seems to have changed. The white-hatted, bow tied guys; the uniformed girls. So antiseptic. Not a hint of personality. I just don't get why this place is a big deal. The fifties are over!
