<<Had the Italian hotdog at Stewarts in Gillette, NJ the other day. Not bad at all, would get it again. What was especially good was the french fries, not sure if it was the oil mixture they used but they were exceptional. Of course Stewarts has great root beer in frosted mugs too. Good lunch.>>

Gee Robroy, I hate to disagree with you after only 2 posts on Roadfood (Welcome!), but my wife and I ate lunch at that Stewarts about a year ago and thought both the dogs and fries were totally average. Not bad, but nothing great. And we really wanted to like the place, it's got a nice retro 50's ambiance, and our server was very helpful and pleasant.

Maybe i'ts gotten better since then, I think it was fairly new when we went. --Ken

Better late than never. We finished our 3rd tour back in May. We're going again the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Here's our latest reports. In no particular order.1) Nathan's - Coney Island - (See previous reviews).2) Stewarts - Rahway - Excellent - had the 1/4 pound all beef Thumanns, chili, cheese, onions, mustard, this is hard to top, one of the best hot dogs I have ever had. The group in general gave them very high ratings.3) Danny's Dogs - Garfield - a very ecclectic selection, including a peanut butter & jelly dog, which several of our guys tried and enjoyed. We were entertained by "Uncle" behind the counter with some jammin' on his electric guitar while we ate. Fun time but not the highest on my list, worth the trip however.4) Hot Dog USA - Moonachie, right below where Callaghan's used to be on rte 17. Some spicy varieties, overall not a bad choice.5) Hanks Franks - Lodi - OK, worth a stop, not much more to say .6) Amazing Hot Dog - Veronna - excellent, chili, hot dog, all around great taste and atmosphere. Highly recommened it. 7) Toby's Cup - Phillipsburg - below average for your deep fried dog. Thats about it, I'm going from memory for the most part, it's been a very busy time, so sorry about the brevity and lack of details. Looking for suggestions for our upcoming tour. Any help would be greatly appreciated. So far we have been to the above and -Johnny & Hanges, Rutts Hutt, Hot Dog Johnny's, Mr Dee's, Texas Wiener 1 & II, Jimmy Buff's, Big Daddy's, Syd's, Papaya Dog (NYC) and Grey's Papaya. Thanks in advance for any help, and thank you John, for a great site.

mrkag,
if your group is up for a little driving there's always the Windmill (multiple locations in Monmouth County) and Max's in Long Branch, That Hot Dog Place and G&G's Truck both in Red Bank, JJ'S and Tony's trucks in Newark, Aunt T's cart in Phillipsburg (2 minutes from Toby's Cup), Charlie's Pool Room in Alpha, Bear's in Sayreville, Tido's Junkyard Dog's Easton Ave New Brunswick, ok I think I'll take a breath now.

i think max's in Long Branch is closed for the season. Last time i was there about 3 weeks back they told me they were going to try and stretch it til nov 11 but it was weather related. I pass by there every monday and the last 2 weeks it looked closed. i would call before going. i still think people overlook wunder weiner in beachwood/pine beach area. a little south for most but when i am down there- i go! i think they make the best italian style dog around. i have a dentist appointment down there in jan so i will go right after. bad tooth and all...

getting into my busy season but in the last few months i have gone to Stewarts in Rahway which was prety good, Charlie's in kenilworth, which was ok. Also a couple times to Galloping hill which was good both times and i like the onion rings too. also had a dog at 5 guys in brick and in toms river. Brick one was good-toms river one was greasy. I also hit maxs a few times over the summer as well as the windmill but i have to say that i like the windmill better. Maxs really makes me repeat but maybe that is just my system i wish i could meet you guys on monday but my company works on every holiday except Christmas day, Easter, Thanksgiving and New years day.

I've gone there once with the Munchmobile and wrote my comments earlier in this thread (page 20 something ) and I would have to say it was indeed the worst hot dog I've ever had. So bad I had to have another, I just couldn't believe it. I even checked the date on the package of hot dogs to make sure they were fresh. They were.

In response to John's assesment of Tido's, we are laughing our butts off, that is hilarious, "it's so bad I had to have another". Now we have to go there, our group will "relish" that stop. We greatly appreciate everyones diverse opinions, we have many varying opinions even among the small group of ours, thats what makes it all so much fun. Our group keeps expanding with every tour, and it's just more fun every time watching newbies get involved. Thanks again all for the input. Talk to you soon after Thanksgiving. mr kag.

Ok before I get banished from future hot dog tours, maybe I should have mentioned in my previous post about Tido's that I had the all beef dog. I'm not a huge fan of beef and pork dogs so I went with the all beef dog which I thought was good.

Tido's serves 3 different dogs that they prepare in water. A turkey dog, which I didn't (and won't) try, a beef/pork Hatfield, which is what you get if you ask for a dog and don't specify which, and an all beef Sabrett. The Sabrett was infinitely better than the Hatfield, which is the one that I was referring to as the worst. But it wasn't served hot enough. I have to check my notes, but it might have been bland from being in the water too long. I also think it was skinless. A dirty water Sabrett should have casing.

Yes, on page 20 of this thread I posted about Tido's. The Sabrett was skinless, bland, and not hot enough.

I kind of searched, but didn't find anything right away.

Did Mr. Dee's close or what? Why did they close and how long have they been closed? Family illness or death or what? Any ideas if there is plans to reopen?

I looooooooove their "special dee" sauce.

Hello all,
As you may or may not know, Jimmy Buff's was chosen as the hotdog palace of the East Coast and we will be featured on the Travel Channel on a new series titled "Food Palaces". The show will air some time before Christmas. The reason for the post is to let you all know that filming will be on Tuesday December 4th between 11am and 3pm at the East Hanover location. I would be delighted if you guys could be included in the broadcast. If you can't get the day off maybe you could just stop by for lunch. Hope to see you guys there.

i was at boardwalk hot dog in Brick yesterday and the dogs were very good. the new owner's name is Fred (i think the previous owner was Sal). I do not know when he took over the place, but he told me he is open until 6:30 every day (except Sunday). I like the dogs better than Max's. The rolls at Boardwalk are "chewy", almost like italian bread, and not too large. The owner was quite friendly as well. a Schikhaus 1/4 pounder was $3.50.

Jimmy Buff's Video Shoot

I was at Jimmy Buff's for the video shoot today. It was a great time. John Fox was interviewed for the show and Screenbear showed up for the fun.

I have prepared a trip report but need the details about the show to finalize it. I talked to the executive producer in LA as she was "going into a meeting". She is supposed to call me back with details about the show. I will add the show info to the trip report and publish it as I receive it.

Hi Everyone,
I recently ate a quick dog at the Hot Dog Chef, a cart on the border of Scotch Plains and Fanwood. The owner parks in front of a swim club and wears a chefs coat. I think it's been posted about before, but I don't remember what was said. I wasn't impressed, the biggest disappointment was the cold roll. I went there the Saturday after Thanksgiving and eating a hot hot dog, on a cold roll in cool weather wasn't good. The chili wasn't anything special either. I don't think I would eat there again.
