So...getting back to my question, does anybody know if the Dickeys franchises smoke their own BBQ or do they get it shipped in...or do they have a magic no-smoke technique...like my friends who do "BBQ pork" in their crock pots?

I took two of my wife's cousins from out of town to the new one here in Plano for lunch just a few days ago.  I was pleasantly surprised how good everything was.  They loved it.

So...getting back to my question, does anybody know if the Dickeys franchises smoke their own BBQ or do they get it shipped in...or do they have a magic no-smoke technique...like my friends who do "BBQ pork" in their crock pots?

Let's put it this way:  I have never (aside from my cigarette or diesel exhaust) smelled any smoke in or around a Dickey's - and there are 30 or so within 25 miles from our home.

However, as (from their website) it appears that Dickey's has metastasized into 44 of the the contiguous 48 states, let me refine the issue:  if they would just drop the "BBQ" from their name I don't think most of us detractors would complain.

So, let's look at them as "Dickey's Meat & 2", featuring a "free" pickle, pepper, & onion bar + "free" soft-serve for dessert.

As such, they really do serve several varieties of wholesome protein (their brisket is at least as good as what Subway calls "steak"!) and (if you select carefully) two decent sides.  And, ...  you can do as I do - fill your drink cup with their "free" soft-serve (which is also milk-fat and taste-free) and thus embellish your meal with the semblance of a rootbeer float.

Yes, old farts like Twinwilow and I disdain them; but (thinking back to raising my four), truth be known, Dickey's is a great place to take kids:  protein, mac 'n cheese + "free" soft serve for a price not that much more than Mickey D's.  The fact that even the caucasians of European descent are wholesomely (and optimistically!) fecund here explains much of their success in Dallas.  And they always have "significant" coupons which Mrs. Metro (having no other duties) clips.

For myself, Dickey's - coupon in hand or not - is a "deal":  their unsauced pulled pork protein platter, when augmented by my trusty, ever-in-hand bottle of Scotts Sauce( www.scottsbarbecuesauce.com ) together with the abovementioned "root beer float", makes for a tasty dinner with enough left over for the next day's tasty lunch.  Mrs. Metro seems happy enough with the brisket her Faith allows her, but at this point she wouldn't know good Texas BBQ even if it bit her on her sweet, young ... .

Quandry:  do I ever take her to Austin?

I think there might be one or two around San Antonio, but not sure.
However,I can go down to Texas Pride BBQ on Lavernia Road and 1604 down near St.Hedwig.Or,I can go futher to Home of Da Smoke by Adkins. Then I have Harmon's in Cibolo,or take a drive to New Braunfels to Granzin's who also own a meat market that's been in town for ages,or try McBee's another local place.
I can also go to City Market in Luling,or head over to Lockhart,to Black's Smitty's or Kreuz's.Don't need no stinking chain Q place.

A few years ago, I became enthused when a Dickeys popped up in Seekonk, MA.  Having found most all New England BBQ is terrible (one exception being Kit Kats in Stonington, CT), were very interested.  Went twice - BBQ was fair at best & sides even less so.  They went out of business within a year -  Even New Englanders would not go back.  Never did smell any smoke (outside).

McDonalds of BBQ sums it up well.  Not suggested, even if desperate for a (any) BBQ fix..

They're popping up all over here in Minnesota (that's cause the general population don't know dick(ey's) about BBQ.  The first time we tried them it was sort of not bad.  The last time (and I knew I was in trouble when he pulled the shoulder out of the Alto-Shaam and it was sealed up in plastic wrap...)   my daughter tried the food I brought home and got mad at me for buying it...  we haven't been back in a year, and won't...

That is indeed a good way of putting it.  And, even though I have said some "snarky" stuff above about the "BBQ issue", I agree with the rest of your sentiments as well.

If I lived in a BBQ starved area, I would probably would feel the same.
Thankfully however, where I live there is a choice of enough real BBQ joints that puts Dickey's way down at the bottom of the list.

Kinda like the people in Orlando who, for years, had only Sonny's

Now, there are some wonderful alternatives.  That said, on Sonny's v. Dickey's:  Sommy's at least does have the "smoke smell" inside and out.

Sonny's is perhaps unique.  While not to be confused with GA / TN nor Carolina BBQ, it has its niche, kind of the way a McDonalds fillet of fish is enjoyable, but should not be confused with a real fish sandwich (grouper, etc).

IMO, Dickies is comparable to other fast-food fish sandwiches - should be avoided.  It's neither good BBQ nor an alternative.

CCinNJ consider yourself fortunate. We have been blessed with one in Georgetown so I now have three places to avoid.

It's not BBQ...but I think the closest thing to BBQ in this area (in these minds) is Americanized-Chinese food. Since that's very good...we don't need a Dickey.

Dickeys opened a franchise in Longview (about 40 miles from us). They catered our company party and we tried them once as a family. I have to say that we have some excellent BBQ in our area that we go to regularly but Dickeys is there in a pinch.
