You left out Dixie Chili (Newport, Covington, Erlanger) and Chili Time (St. Bernard).  Also, while Empress may have once been one of the "big three", each one that is left is independent and quite different from one another.

If you disqualify Dixie you would have to disqualify Blue Ash as well as they now have two locations.

Dictator

Hi, all.  I was wondering if any of you had recently eaten at the Grand Finale in Glendale, and, if so, what did you think of the food and service?  I ate there probably twenty years ago and thought it was all right (granted, my palate was quite unrefined in those days).  At the wife's request, I made a reservation there for our tenth anniversary meal.  I hope it proves to be a good choice.  If I had my druthers, we'd be going to Carlo & Johnny or Nada, or some such.  But it's not about pleasing *me*, of course, but about making my wife happy.

Thanks!

Oh, and I've always loved RoadFood, and I thought it was just about time to get my duff and start posting.

Haven't been there in about 10 years, but I've always liked it. Service has never been a problem -- it just isn't anywhere close to where I live, which is why it's been so long since I've been back.

Oh yeah, I saw the Lee's on Beechmont was closed when I passed it today.

Used to be great 15 years ago, but the chain has really gone downhill since.

Metro Bagels on Mason /Mont.  appears to have closed???  I loved their bagels!  But the last 2 times I've stopped...Nada...

And for Grand Finale,  This was where we went every year for our small company Xmas dinner.. until about 2 years ago,  when things just seemed to have changed?  Haven't been back since though,  but I thought the original owners had retired?????  could be wrong...

Note that the aforementioned Jet's Pizza also has a location in Florence near Boone County High School.

El Mariachi in Hebron is in the process of moving.  Their new location will be just across North Bend Road in the new shopping plaza next to the UDF.

What's being built in Latonia at 43rd & Winston?  Somebody mentioned TGIFriday's but there's one just 2 exits away on Turkeyfoot so I doubt it.  Anybody??

Matt, according to some random person posting on Polly Campbell's blog, this is going to be a Walgreens

Sorry dude

Since this new version of this website has been active I get an error message everytime I try to post on the Dayton thread.  Requests to fix the problem to management here have not fixed the problem.

So when I post on this thread about my Dayton experiences please do not get out of sorts.

Dictator, Grand Finale has had new owners for several years now but I haven't noticed any decline in the quality of the food or the service. I ate there two months ago and it was just as good as it has always been.

I don't care for the coziness of the seating in the main room so I always request a table in the back room. It's more spacious and quiet. You might want to call this afternoon and request that if it is really important to you.

I saw an effusively positive review of this location, on Yahoo, I think. I am not far from it and I have thought of trying a slice.

But I looked at the menus for Jet's pizza and the photos make it look like a Domino's wheel o' cheese and bread. :(

And I thought it was just the one location on Mason-Montgomery. The fact that it's part of a chain automatically makes me suspicious...

Did you ever try MV Pizza? Their web site is scary...

Made my first ever stop at New Orleans to go today

A glazed tilapia poboy with sweet potato fries (1$ upcharge) for me

A fried catfish poboy with standard waffle fries for the wife

In a word - excellent.

The regular poboy is enough to feed 3 people, imho, and very very good.  The wife was particularly impressed with the tartar sauce on hers, claiming it the best she'd ever had.  For me the sweet potato fries were the star of the show.

The wife is already asking to go back...I may make her a roadfooder someday after all

I started to do something like this a few years back, but my son decided that he was tired of chili every Tuesday night.  I agree that Dixie would make a worthwhile addition and Chili Time in St. Bernard is a MUST for the occasional whole pepper that you'd inevitably get in your chili.  Good stuff.

Gourmet Chili - It's been several years since I visited, but it was an "interesting" place with decent chili.

Pleasant Ridge Chili - One of my favorites when I was still located in Norwood.  Had some screwed up orders (gravy cheese fries? GAG!) but the chili was always excellent.

I miss the good old Chili Company.  Only place I've ever been to that had a slaw dog or a slaw way. ;-)

We have recently made the acquaintance of Everything Bagels, in the Eastgate area, around the corner from Ban Thai.

I have been pretty impressed with how they run their business. The bagels are not the best I've ever had, but they're quite good, large and with many varied flavors. They crust up nicely when toasted.

The breakfast sandwiches we had Sunday were excellent. I had an everything bagel with veg cream cheese, lox, onion, egg, and capers. It was swell.

The rest of the menu looks good too, and I am told by friends who frequent the place that the soups are outstanding.

The company has also been extremely generous to our local schools, providing bagels and spreads for standardized test weeks at the two high schools and for the music competition held at our high school a couple weekends back.

Prices are very good. I recommend them highly.

The Rising Roll on Hunt Rd in Blue Ash is not yet open.  I drove by it the other day on my way to Kroger and it is still full of construction equipment with no sign of it being done anytime soon from what I could tell.  I did not stop and get out of my car to see if there were any signs with dates or other messages on them, but from the parking lot they still looked far from completed.

Rising Roll's website seems to indicate that the store is now open and even has a page for online ordering.  They either hustled to finish the store or else their website is wrong.  Anyway, I'll see if I can get up there in a few weeks and give a report if someone wants to confirm that they're open.

Rising Roll  Drove by yesterday evening as a matter of fact and it looked like they could indeed be open.  Chairs were up on the tables,  and the hours on the door said they close at 2:30... I was going to swing by this weekend and see what was up,  But since I'm currently "being good"  and only eating out once a week... I'll probably just pop in and grab a menu....

DeMeo's Italian Restaurant at 111 Main Street in Milford closed and was replaced by Padrino's Italian Eatery in March of this year:

Their menu looks fairly complete and well priced - has anyone been there yet?

Check out the 'online ordering' link in my previous post and the click the 'Custom Orders' link.  It will give you a complete menu with prices.  Looks like most sandwiches (w/ potato salad, pasta salad or cole slaw and a pickle) run from around $6.75 to $7.50, salads run aroud $8.25 and soup runs from $3.25 to $5.25.

I dropped in there yesterday for lunch...  The line was almost to the door but the service was pretty quick for those that didn't order hot sandwiches.  I had a cuban sandwich and a side of their potato salad.  The potato salad was pretty good, but the serving was pretty small...like 4 normal size bites worth.  The sandwich was pretty good and was a good size.  It had what I would expect on a cuban sandwich outside of Cuba or Florida where they know how to make them correctly..  It was definitely the best cuban sandwich that I have had in Cincinnati, but of course that isn't saying too much.

I will have to go back there again and try out some of their other sandwiches and wraps.  Their salads are on display in the cooler case along side the line and they are very large, so it looks like you at least get a lot of salad for your money there and they aren't skimpy.

Terry's Turf Club 2009/04/14 13:08:05 (permalink)
I know the burgers at Terry's are good, but my last visit has me wondering how soon I'll be back.  The service was flat out horrible, and rude.  We were there at 6 PM on a friday, and were pressured to order quickly. There were 7 in our party, and we were forced to move from an 8 person table to a six person table after we were seated.

The burgers were good, but exceptionally greasy.  I still don't care for the fries.  Soggy and greasy.  Our bill came, and it was impossible to decipher.  All it had were hash marks, then a total for the line.  There were no words at all.  When we asked our waitress what each line item represented, she scolded us and said "no separate checks!".   Then she grabbed the check from us, and broke it out.  We did not ask her for separate checks, or to break it out for us, simply to identify the line items so we could break out our own check.

Our total was $110, but by the time she was done breaking it out, it mysteriously became $140.  That's $20 each for a burger and a couple beers.  Certianly not worth getting yelled at for.

Overall, one of the worst service experiences in my memory.   The place was packed though, and there was a line waiting, so I doubt they'll change anything anytime soon.  People seem to be convinced this place is awesome.  It just cracks me up to see all the Hyde Park'ers think they're "cool" because they're going to the little dive joint that has quietly become the most overpriced burger in the city.

(By contrast, I was at Quatman Cafe on Saturday.  2 huge burgers, each with a generous portion of perfect shoestring fries, I had two beers and the girl had one.  Total with tax and a >20% tip was $20.00)

I agree about the fries at Terry's - as a result, I always order them well done, and this improves them greatly, though even then they still are nowhere near as good as they could be.

It's unfortunate that the restaurant is closing. I'm glad it's because they want to move to Bali and not because they can't survive in this economy.

Our lunchbunch group visited New Orleans To Go today - it is now open for lunch at 11:30 AM - above is their current menu board.

We had the large (11 inch) Peace Maker Po' Boy, seafood chowder, red beans and rice, sweet potato fries, fried okra and key lime pie - exceptionally delicious in every respect!

After eating at New Orleans To Go our group went to Marina's International Deli  in Symmes Township ( a couple of miles North of I-275 at 11426  Montgomery Road):

http://www.marinasdeli.com/

Their website has just been updated recently and gives you a great amount of detail on the food and beverages this wonderful place sells.

Here is the cold cuts, fish, salads and cheese menu board:

They have some great deli items (I love their mushroom salad, several of their meat cold cuts, their liver pate, their European Potato Salad and many many other items they stock).

If you are in the area you might wish to check them out.  They will make you a sandwich which can be eaten on premises or taken out - they also bake their own breads.
