Ok, I will bite. What makes it the best steak ever, or at least on this side of the Hudson River, in NJ?


I love Arthurs, in Hoboken, for the best good steak ever, on this side of the Hudson, in NJ.

Valenca in Elizabeth. Steak on a stone, you cook it yourself. Two big cuts of filet mignon for $24, plus a huge side of amazing rice and homemade potato chips, as well as salad and amazing portuguese rolls. Don't forget the sangria and tres leches cake for dessert. This place is legendary. I never go anywhere else for steak after finding this place.

If one judges a steakhouse by the quality (grading, aging) of its steak then Arthur's would rank quite below many NJ steakhouses. If you include things like wine list, it would be knocked even lower. It's a big, fatty ribeye, with nice charred flavor.

I personally do not judge my favorite overall steak experiences by wine list.

I judge by taste "quality" and "flavor" quality of ANY certain steak or burger served, with consideration to good overall value and consistency of a restaurant in my area where I can be confident to "enjoy" my experience, whenever I dine there. Arthur's ranks highly with me, for all of my personal criterias, tastes, and expectations.

If one would like to enjoy a more expensive cut, indulge in exepensive wine, or would like a more formal dining atmosphere, there are plenty of other options, in NJ & NYC listed throughout this section. Arthur's is what it is, and they serve what they serve, very well, all the time. It is not the newest, hottest, or trendiest steakhouse, but I have never been disappointed in a dining experience, at Arthur's. Since I cannot say the same for all of my personal experiences at most of the newest, hottest, or trendiest locations throughout NJ & NYC, I will stick to Arthur's.

wow. well, my comment was for Baah Ben's benefit, who lives, I think, far away from Hoboken, or Morris Plains, and who has expressed his fondness of places like Luger's and Sparks in the past. Your fondness of Arthur's was document right here, and I of course am not trying to change your taste in steak. You like what you like, and that's just fine with me.

as to your assertion that anyone would judge a steakhouse by their wine list, well I just haven't read anything of that nature on this thread, and I certainly didn't suggest that I or anyone would do that.

you'll likely find me at Arthur's, for what would be about the 500th time, before you find me at Rare in Little Falls, for whatever that's worth.

Debating steak is a no win situation...It really is. Thank you both for some info on Arthur's. they have a website...Three locations, too.

the Emerson location has closed, and it's no loss as it paled in comparison to the original in Hoboken in both atmosphere and overall experience. Only two left I think. And I never debate.

I've been to their North Brunswick location a bunch of months ago; I guess that's the "other" one that's left..
nicely charred, real good for a cheap steak.

The North Brunswick Arthur's in no longer affiliated with the original in Hoboken or its sister in Morris Plains as far as a I know. And some reports have suggested that since the split, the food and prices have changed. Perhaps they're now serving USDA Prime and would be considered in the running of top steakhouses in NJ. I'll give them a call and ask.

Ellen - I'm not sure I understand you ..Are you saying WJ said the best burgers are Omaha Beef's burgers..The firm that sells them all over the country? They sell steaks, some fish items, baked stuffed potatoes? Or, are you saying the best burgers can be found when visiting the City of Omaha? Because that would not suprise me at all. WJ travels all over the place and Omaha is one of the biggest meatpacking centers in the country. Probably some of the best beef in the entire country can be found in Nebraska.

If you're talking about the mail order business, then yes, try Sam's Club fresh pattied burger and see how they compare.

My opinion is based on the best GOOD steak in NJ, not the best PRIME steak in NJ.

I've yet to do the "Omaha burger tour"; it's on my list, though..

Steve's Sizzling Steakhouse in Carlstadt has some the best steaks in NJ, you have your choice of Porterhouse,Filet Mignon,NY Strip, T-bone and Rib-eye.

    The best steak this carnivore has eaten was at Arthur's in Hoboken.  The worst by far was Steve's Sizzling Steakhouse.  They marinate their steaks in Maggi (personally asked a chef who's son was in a tennis camp I ran) & I do not at all like the taste of soy sauce (best way for my taste buds to describe it) on my steak.  Just my 2 cents as a new poster. 

tennisnj ~ You got plenty of milage for your 2 cents worth. I totally agree about the flavor of soy sauce on steak. Terrible!

I don't want to taste soy sauce or anything else on or in my steak except a liberal sprinkling of salt. I've never understood peoples' need for steak sauce on their meat, or for a soaking in marinade. Both interfere with the natural beef flavor of the steak.

Ketchup. That's what you put on your steak.

a little fresh ground black pepper, a little garlic- marinade ,schmarinade- grill on real chracoal- medium rare please............no A1, no sauce of any kind- I am a purist when it comes to steak!

tennisnj, what other steakhouses have you eaten at?  that would help put your comments in context.  

Arthurs's in Hoboken is a nice steakhouse,but once in awhile their Delmonico steaks can have too much fat or grissle for my taste, also the sauce at STeve's is not Maggies or soy,it may be in the base but they are not the only ingredients.

Since the Hudson River runs generally North/South...Anything WEST of the Hudson encloses a very large area.

I sincerely invite any of you N J folks to wander down to Greenville, Mississippi or better yet, ride into Paducah, Kentucky for a visit to DOES EAT PLACE.

While you may find it differs by a large amount from the ambience of good old Jersey, You may find the friendly down-home nature of the service and the mis-matched furnishings to be a welcome respite from Old Line City Stuff.  The Beef (which is what really matters here) is Supurb.

I have nver done DOES in KY but I have enjoyed their  quaint facility in Greenville, MS.  Great super food.
