Pistachio Ice Cream - Mon, 11/17/03 5:41 PM

This is a flavor that I have not been able to buy recently. While I was in Prince Edwqrd Island, I stopped at the beautiful COWS store at the new bridge. They had it and I bought it. It is a most unusual flavor. I do not think I could tolerate it frequently, but for a flavor break, it was excellent. I also had their grape ice cream. Real good. I would have tried more flavors but I stopped at a restaurant right before that and I had some great PEI potatoes.

I had "Pistachio Nut" at "Kopp's" in Milwaukee last week (but it isn't on their list again on the published menu through 12/5/03). It was the equal to their butter pecan that I had Saturday. I'm looking forward to their "turtle sundae" flavor next saturday and their "Tiramisu" next Sunday. They have "rocky road" Tuesday, the 26th, "pecan praline pumpkin pie" on Thanksgiving, "spumoni" on Friday, the 28th, "macadamia nut" on Sunday the 30th and "caramel pecan silk" on Thursday, December 4th. And other great sounding (and great tasting, I'm sure) flavors on other days.
The "pistachio nut" was the pistachio custard with a very heavy mix in of toasted pistachio nuts. I can almost still taste it.
Carvel's is good, but "Kopp's" is in a class by itself.

Dearfolk,
When I find some pistachio in these parts, I'll warble back by. It might be only Ben & Jerry's, but theirs is pretty doggone good.
The University Of Georgia Creamery used to make a run of it each year before Christmas. I'll have to doublecheck over there to see if they're going to have any this year... and if so, when.

I really like Ben & Jerry's pistachio, only I wish that they would use 50 percent less nuts.

When I was growing up in NYC, all the local Queens Chinese restaurants(which were pretty bad) served either pistachio ice cream or Jell-O as the choice of dessert. Don't ask why -- I don't know. Has anyone else experienced this odd phenomenon?

I don't know about the phenomenon in general but I can certainly vouch for pistachio ice cream by the Chinatown Ice Cream factory in New York, located on Bayard Street in Chinatown, Manhattan.

Great ice cream. Always a line up. Also great chinese flavors. Ethnic roadfood ...

HaaganDazs had just opened up a competing location just before I left New York, but it looks like the Factory was doing just fine.

Heavenly pistachio ice cream. My only suggestion outside of New York aside from B&J, is to check out a Chinese grocery store.

Ben and Jerry's Pistachio is the only ice cream I ever buy. Just loaded with whole pistachio nutmeats. It's the best in my book.

The pistachio at Margie's in Chicago is addictive. Definitely not for weight watchers (18% butterfat), but worth every calorie.

My favorite flavor! I like Ben and Jerry's much better than Haggen Daz's version, but both are still great. Lots of legitimate pistachios in both versions. I would really like it if someone made cherry pistachio with legitimate pistachios.

My husband loves pistachio ice cream, but feels the same way. We don't often buy Ben and Jerry's... too much stuff in it. :)

In the end, we pretty much gave up and now make our own at home every once in a while. It's a bit of a pain in the butt, but the end results are delicious.

Yes, I remember that too (Brooklyn). Sometimes you had a choice of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or pistachio, sometimes only pistachio. I wonder if pistachio is some wierd Chinese nut.

I don't remember the Jello part, but I remember fresh (canned)pineapple (with a toothpick) was available.

Here in Ohio there's Graeters Ice Cream (Famous French Pot Ice Cream)
pistachio- I think they even have mail order!! $50 to $90 for 6 pints
Or try Jeni's Artistinal Ice Cream from Columbus Ohio-she adds a little honey in with hers, about $7 to 8 a pint

I was only a casual Pistachio ice cream fan until trying the standard by which all other scoops should be judged: Annabelle's of Portsmouth NH. If you don't like a lot of nuts, it's not the ice cream for you, but if you are a big Pistachio fan it's to die for!

This place has a great flavor that I get almost every time...Cherry Pistachio.

It is VERY good!

They also occasionally have Pistachio soft serve. I have never had this anywhere else. It is nirvana for a pistachio fan!

I love Ben and Jerry's Ice cream because it has so much stuff in it. The Pistachio is on of my all time favorites as well as the Cherry Garcia. Josh and John's in Colorado has some of the best Rum Raisin Ice cream I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. J.M.H.O.

The very best pistachio in Southern California can be found at 2 wonderful local shops---If you like genuine Sicilian pistachio with the smoothest texture on earth, go to Beverly Hills and check out Silky Smooth Ultra Creamery. They offer a variety of hand-crafted flavors made from scratch on the premises, and pistachio is very often a daily flavor. This is truly a sublime experience!

If you like your pistachio with nut pieces in it, the most authentic gelateria in LA, Bulgarini, has an incredibly delicious Sicilian pistachio as well. They are in Altadena, near Pasadena.

My wife always orders Pistachio. There are two ice cream places that make it homemade at the Jersey shore...each is something special and loaded with the nuts. If you are near the Jersey shore try Either Hoffman's or Sundaes(both in Point Pleasant). Great other flavors also!

Since the family has a few hundred acres of pistachio trees I get my fill of the nuts every year. Don't think I'll go looking for the ice cream.

When I was growing up, Howard Johnson's restaurants on the PA & NJ turnpikes had delicious Pistachio Ice Cream. Where ever they had a restuaurant, you could also find it. Alas, years have gone by, Howard Johnson's is a bygone, and the Pistachio almond available locally does not come close! I wish I knew a mail order source

The pistachio ice cream from Haagen Dazs is not that bright green color. Every time I buy it, the entire pint just seems to magically disappear. Strange.
