Re:Seafood joints in St. Marys,Ga........
The dining room in the old hotel down by the water offers an excellent rock shrimp dish that we've enjoyed many times. Diagonally across the street is a very good seafood restaurant (laings??) which can have a long wait for a table sometimes. A small Greek restaurant on the main drag a block or so up from the hotel is a bit pricey, but welcoming and tasty. And back near I-95 there's a drive-in with curb service where I had a really good root beer float a few years ago.
This year when driving south we skipped St Marys and drove on to St Augustine, a town we had never before visited. OSteens proved to be every bit as good as Roadfooders have been saying over the years. The fried shrimp with Datil sauce were a unique treat and; the staff is friendly and efficient. The only minor problem we had with the place was their strange practice of requiring clients to check in at a small take-out window and wait outside 'till a table is ready - it was a chilly January evening and uncomfortable out there in the dark parking lot. It helped a lot that another suffering but friendly couple shared our misery and, as it happened, we were seated next to each other when we went inside and they proved to be delightful dining companions.
