NYC Mexican Street Truck

Just had a nice chicken taco from a truck on 6 Ave & W. 17th:
two warm soft corn toritillas, grilled chicken pieces, lettuce,green sauce (cilantro) and - squeeze from a fresh lemon!
 
The rest is familiar, but I have never had the lemon juice part on a taco. Is this common in other places?

I'm more accustomed to a lime wedge.  Both the taco trucks at Long Wharf in New Haven, and the taqueria that I go to on Main St. in Middletown serve their tacos with lime.

As others wrote...lime yes, lemon...new to me.

If you enjoy taco truck fare you need to take the #7 train to 73rd street and then walk east under the El. The best of them is this one...whic is usally around 91st street I believe.

The miracle is, and it is probably due to competition, that they are all just $2 or maybe $2.25. Some of the besting eating in NYC! 

What a country!  Who says the economy is in trouble?

Tony, thanks for posting that taco pic again with directions!  I think that was the best looking taco I'd seen in 2008 and I'll make a point of getting out to it this year!

Billyboy...we need to make a plan to get a group together to do a tour of the #7 train...Cuban, Tacos, Korean Chicken, Thai, Italian, Indian, Peruvian, Argentinian, Chinese...

Once the weather warms a bit we need to do this!

Shanghai Jimmy liked lemon juice in his chili... and lemonaid to drink w/ it. I kinda like lime better but... how could Jimmy be that wrong???

(PS:  Gotta confess: I am short, and never really saw up inot the window about what particular kind of citrus was squeezed on.I just saw the squeeze! I wonder if, without knowing, you can really tell the difference in taste bet. lemon, lime and "limon."

Lemons are usually less expensive these days. If you get 4 limes for $1 you may get 6 lemons, especially in the winter. Good reason to go, in the summer, for the sake of market research. I had a very funny experience on that block, but it would make most people lose their appetite, who are not used to NYC, in the summer, every once in awhile on trash nights. I thought I saw a cat, but alas, it was no cat. The nice man in front of me gave me a piggyback ride, to the subway  station. I did not make him take me to NJ. That would be a bit much.

We kicked it around a while back, but never got any where as winter was coming. If we get it together sometime in spring it would be great to have anyone come along...even you Joe! 
 

NYNM, I haven't yet.  I stumbled upon it while waiting for my GF outside BBB.  I took some pics of the truck and got a look at the menu.  It looked promising from a distance, but the menu seemed to be all over the place (pastries, burgers, gyros. etc) and only a couple of tacos on the menu.  It looked like a Latin heavy truck at first, so I didn't try anything.  Glad to hear you had a good experience with it, I'll have to give it a fair shake!

Tony and Joe, that tour would be a great idea!!  I need to expand my RF horizons to other boroughs.  Honestly, my head almost exploded in jubilation when I read the possible cuisines you listed!

I'd recommend it, it was fresh. But, yes, most of the menu was "American" (eggs, sandwiches, etc.).
Have you tried Moshe's truck (falaffel, etc) across the street in front of BBB? That is one  slick operation. Huge well lit truck, Yarmulkes and all! And I think Rafqi's (?) mid-eastern truck is nearby too. What is this? "United" Nations food court?

 

If it is owned be THE Moishe's, that is a pioneer cart business ( falafel on a cart in NYC), starting in 1980, when not too many people knew a falafel from a hole in the head. The original Moishe's on 46th & 6th.

I Kwik Meal on 45th & 6th. The owner is a former chef at the Russian Tea Room, and I love a fascinating story, (and a good tzatziki sauce) with my falafel. 

When I think of Moishe's truck I think of these...

 No I do not want a falafel!!! Moishe, Where the hell is my piano?

Oh yes! I'd be in. It's something I've wanted to do myself for quite a while. But rather than doing it solo, it would be much better with someone who knows what's what, such as Tony Bad.

 I just passed another Mexican truck, with lots of real Mexican choices, on the corner of 14th St. & 8th Ave. 
I think this is the same truck I have seen open on weekends at midnight when the local clubs are open - they do a good business.
That's good, because of all the common immigrants in NY, there are fewer Mexicans; I see it is growing.

Sunset Park in Brooklyn is seeing an influx of Mexicans over the past few years.

I've been to the Sunset Park location of Los Pollitos, 5911 5th Ave. That one is take out only, the food is very good. But there is a definite language barrier so I have just ordered things like chicken and beef tacos. (I took High School and College French in the 60's which is basically useless in NY City, heck it was useless when I went to Paris years ago)

If you guys are still on this board, any of you, and still have the same food interests, or if some one else does, I wish you'd give us a current version of the nine cuisine street food tour projected above along the #7 train line!  Or just any part of it.  It sounds great!  And it is getting warm again.

Actually, what ken 8038 wrote was just 3 months ago.  It's the 3rd entry above yours on this page.  He was actually quoting Tony Bad's entry on this page about 11 spots above that.  I'm sure we'll get something together in the ensuing months.  

My bad!  I was looking at the "join date" rather than the post date and claim a senior moment or sleepiness or both.  I do not get up to the city often but would  enjoy spending a couple of days or more sampling street food.   I am looking forward to ypur reports.

Very early on we kicked around a date for early May.. May 3rd I believe...which is approaching rapidly!

Maybe we should start a thread to see if there is any interest for that date?

Ouch! I didn't realize the planning was so imminent.
 
The May 3 and May 15 weekends are not good for me. Any other weekend in May (including the holiday weekend) and any weekend in June except the weekend of 6/16 are good.

PS: Maybe this discussion should be moved to the "Meets and Greets" since it's actually starting to take shape. 

I know that the 3rd is coming up very soon...too soon. I had this in the back of my head for a while but life has...well lets just say my fans need cleaning...and I totally forgot about this until last week.

I'll start a thread in the next couple of days over in the meet and greet section and see what folks think. Even if we do one later, maybe a few of us locals can do a recon mission to see what is out there sometime around the original date.

i think lemons go better with pollo.

in LA you find a lot of places substitute limes with lemons.
