Mrs. Paul's frozen fried clams.

I Finally found some frozen fried clams at Kroger's in, fried clam starved Dallas. I'm planning on preparing them tonight. They're the, Mrs. Paul's brand.
Have any of you tried these before? And, yeah, I know........ You guy's in New England wouldn't touch these with a 10 foot pole but, here in Dallas.........

I saw some in a store recently. They're clam strips, not clams.

The fried clams illustrated on the box look like clam strips.
I'll report how they taste a bit later.

Yeah, but what's the alternative for me in Dallas? Greymo, you live in Maryland where your probably a stone's throw from the real thing.
I've opened the box and they are definitely "strips". I'll enjoy them with a bottle of
Chimay (blue label) Belgian beer.

Well, the same applies to Maryland.  I would have to go as far as  Connecticut  to get the real thing.

Glad that you made the best of it and I am sure that the beer helped.

Beer makes everything taste better. And, as I always say, 
"Beer. It's not just for breakfast anymore"!

Ok, guy's. I've prepared and eaten them. My report and grade:

Just so you know, I baked them in the oven as the cooking directions suggestions.
As I thought, there was much more breading than clam meat. for all intent and purpose, I might as well just have eaten 8 ounces of fried breading with precious little clam flavor. Thank goodness I had my beer.

My grade: On a score from 1-10 I give Mrs. Paul's fried clams a, 2.
I'd have given them a 1 but, the breading was fairly good and, crunchy.

So, there you have it. And yes, Greymo, you were right. I wasted my money!

But, hey. The beer was good.

Well, Twinwillow, I guess it was worth a shot.  Here in PA, I can get strips but never full bellied.  I can sometimes get steamers raw (or steamed), but trying to make my own is tough.  I have found some frozen "clams" in the box that I thought about breading lightly and frying.  Although these clams are not "piss clams", it is sometimes better than nothing, as you stated earlier.  For the most part, I settle for making my own stuffed quahogs or clam chowder.

Phil Romano's Lobster Ranch opened in 2002 and closed later that same year. 

As a clam lover in a clam starved state, Mrs.Pauls had to do. I doused them with my home made cocktail sauce, and once in awhile, a pretty good sized one was in the box. Cant even find them at all anymore.However, at the oddest place, a local Mexican restaurant had them on their menu, so I ordered them.Deep fried, served with both tartar and cocktail sauce, they werent bad.Will do in a pinch. But oh do I miss my trips out east to have them. A whole different experience!!!

used to have those when i was a kid and liked them pretty well, but have not seen them for years.I thought they were good for what they were , but they certainly were not a new england fried clam,,,speaking of frozen fried products, another I liked  was Weavers Fried Chicken- is that still around anywhere? 

I guess when I opened that box of Mrs. Paul's fried clams, I was hoping they would be on a par with the Howard Johnson's fried clams I ate as a kid. How sadly mistaken I was.

Many thanks for the link. We do get fresh clams here in Dallas @ $4.99 to $6.99 a pound. But the link you provided for "Digger's Choice" is great because they offer a much wider variety of all shellfish items. Including, fried clam strips and, fried belly clams! Thanks, again!

I, too, Twinwillow loved the clam strips at Howard Johnsons back when I was a kid. And for awhile in the 70s, Mrs.Pauls were on par with them.How things change...

Well, at least you picked a good Abby beer.  I actually enjoy Chimay's red label best of their line up, though I certainly wouldn't turn any of them down!

I know that BJ WHolesale club sells fried clam strips prefab in the frozen section. They taste like bits of deep fried goodyear tires.   bkk

I wonder if a place like Sam's Club would have a good frozen clam, for us landlubbers?

I too, enjoyed the HoJo clams as a kid.  As a general rule, I prefer my seafood broiled, not fried, but clams are an exception.  They are good raw, though, when you can find them.

Someday I'm going to have to have the wholebelly clam experience I keep reading about here on Roadfoood.

Greymo, you could try Leagle Seafoods at their D.C. location, they may have them on the menu.
Those clam strips are cut from sea clams that's why they can be on the tough side.
Twinwillow try the Mrs. Pauls fish cakes, not a bad product, fills the void in a pinch. Chow Jim

I've yet to find a frozen clam product that I have liked. I must confess that I may be jaded as I lived on the Rowley River (where they dig the Ipswich clams) for most of my childhood. I wouldn't be caught dead eating a clam strip though. My Mom did make a delightful clam fritter with a whole belly clam in the center. It might be duplicated with chopped canned clams though. I'm going to have to experiment as the recipe died with her.
