Anthony Bourdain and his crew blitzed our lovely city last August, spending their time racing around to some of Chicago's most interesting culinary destinations.  Everything from high end, white table cloth institutions, to a host of more Roadfood-worthy joints were visited, including several that we are considering for our Milwaukee/Chicago Spring Fling!

No Reservations airs tonight, Monday, February 2nd, at 9:00pm Eastern and Central (not sure how they accomplish this feat), with an encore showing immediately following at 10:0pm.

And now you know.

Thanks Buddy! I plan to watch it. I had seen the ads for this since I watched 2 days of TC food shows over the W/E. I had already seen most of those shows but I loved watching them again. And.. they had all  the Man v Food shows also. I like that Adam guy!

FYI...I just checked my cable guide down here in Central FL. According to that, the Chicago show airs at 10pm, with an encore showing at 11. At 9pm down here, we've got a No Reservations about the South West.

Yeah, my source of information on the airtimes was based in the midwest and may not have been entirely accurate.  Sorry about that.

On the other hand, better we give you a time that is late rather than a time that is early, causing you to miss it altogether.

That was a very good show with lots of characters.
Wow, that was some sandwich. It looks like our tour would begin and end right there 'cause it looked like it would be near impossible to slice and share.

Buddy, where were you when the filming was going on at Burts?
I saw so many other familiar faces "packing the house"
I thought I'd see you too?
Camera shy?
I really enjoyed the episode,
and liked that Tony didn't just hit all the trite been there, done that Chi town spots.
We now have some new places we have to try...

Loved it! Pure TB! I enjoyed (almost) every bite. I really didn't like the looks of that Chicago deep dish pizza or, the "loaded" dogs. I guess thats the New Yorker in me. But, loved the show and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I am a native Chicagoan but spent two tours of duty in NY and acquired a taste for NY style pizza.  I will admit to really liking Burt's pizza...it is sorta like the difference between a hot dog and a brat.  Both are sausages, but...totally different, and I love them both.  Same with Burt's and NY style pizza.

It seemed that it grew on Tony also.

I was in Cincinnati doing Roadhouse Bar-B-Que Sauce demos at Jungle Jim's Market.  I managed to sell out by 5:30pm EDST (4:30pm CDST).  I quickly loaded up my gear, jumped in my car and drove at high speed on a northwest diagonal route through the state of Indiana.  I did not stop for food, gas, or a bathroom break,  having filled up on the first two and relieving myself of the latter before leaving Cincy.  Even with major road construction around the junction of I-65 and I-80/90, I managed to arrive at Burt's at 9:30pm CDST.

The crew had already finished taping, but everyone was in a relaxed mode and I had the opportunity to meet Anthony Bourdain (a very tall man).  In addition, as I helped clean up from the mass of people who crowded into Burt's that night, I was fortunate enough to latch onto Mr. Bourdain's leftover pizza which he did not want to drag along with him.  I considered selling the individual pieces on ebay, but thought better of it; sharing the remaining half of the X-Large pizza with my wife and children.

It was a total madhouse at Burt's that night and I'm not sure that I'm sorry I missed it.

Believe me, If I were given the opportunity to try any of those Chicago faves, I'd jump at it! Actually, I lived in Chicago when I was 11 and 12 (1951-1952). I remember eating "red hots" and tamales. Funny, a distinct memory I have was, drinking a small coke (.5 cents) at a drug store counter on the North side. I can remember them adding crushed ice first, and then the Coke syrup and then the seltzer. It was sooooo refreshing!

They re-ran the Chicago episode this afternoon. I liked the 'smoked fish' and the 'pizza' segments enough to want to visit them on the next Chicago trip...but I think I would pass on the teaspoon sized servings of gourmet whatever it was...I will assume those were tapas he was sampling from the "modern restaurants". (I didn't bother with the names as they left me 'lacking desire' to visit.

It was another good episode, and the teaser for the "Food Porn" chapter next week sounds interesting too.

Al, you would like Hot Doug's too.  In addition to every kind of "standard" sausage you can name, he features a wide variety of wild game and other unique meat based sausages with some very interesting house made toppings.

Calumet Fisheries, Burt's Place (pizza), and Hot Doug's are all places under consideration for the Milwaukee/Chicago contingent's Spring Fling get together.  No specific dates set yet, although late April and early May are getting strong support.  What's your schedule like in the Spring?

As for the fancy schmancy joints, Bourdain actually made those guys seem more human and more down to earth than the way they are normally perceived around here.  Tiny portions are par for the course in those places.  I guess you gotta stop at Gene & Judes for a couple of hot dogs just to fill up after dining at Moto.

Yeah  Hot Doug's looked pretty good too! I'm not much into the Wienie-stuff, but some good Polish or Brats make a Bun downright tastie !!

I like a Tapas style dinner now and then, but when the chef/cook creates a dish using mini-tweezers to "stack" the fish-eggs, I lose my motivation !!

TW,

I started working the soda fountain of my dad's drug store (Castellano Pharmacy on Kedzie & Harrison-west side) in 1955. I served many Cokes jerked with soda water. Back then, you had a choice of a Coke, cherry Coke, chocolate Coke, vanilla Coke, or lemon Coke. We also served Green River. The syrups were in one gallon glass bottles with a little glass handle on the neck. Unfiltered cigarettes sold for fifteen cents and filtered were seventeen. My favorite counter lunch was a grilled cheese and a chocolate malt. Malts were served with a packet of two Salerno butter cookies. Memories......

CTD, do they still make Salerno's Butter Cookies? My mother bought them all the time when I was a kid, but I haven't seen them in the stores since I don't know when. Always liked them and wouldn't mind having them again.

I had an uncle who was a national sales rep for Salerno Cookies back in the 60s and 70s. Come to think of it, I haven't seen them around in years.

I lived 5 minutes from the Salerno Butter Cookie factory in Morton Grove, IL from 1970-1978. The Revell Model Company was only two minutes down the street from Salerno.
