Desert Dogs And Desserts - Scottsdale, AZ

There's another Desert Dog in AZ!! This one actually serves Hot Dogs. It's at 3015 N. Scottsdale Rd, Just north of Thomas in the Plaza 777 strip center. It's under new ownership and the new folks have spruced the place up a little. They feature Vienna Beef Dogs, Hamburgers and Sandwiches plus home-made desserts. Also open for Breakfast. I ate there today, first time since the new owners were in place. Ordered the "today's Special" which was a 1/4 # Vienna dog, small fries and soft drink for $6.75, Regularly $7.95. Had my standard yardstick of Chili & Onions on it to compare to other places. The Hot Dog steamed but not overcooked, very good texture. The Chili was flavorful but not over spicy - kinda a cross between regular Chili & Hot Dog Sauce and contained NO BEANS! HOORAY! The onions were fresh and finely chopped, the way I like them. Served on a fresh, warm, Chicago poppy seed bun. (Vienna's I would guess). The Fries were non-discript frozen crinkle cut. No fountain drinks, all canned. High marks for the Dog, Low Marks for the fries. They also offer a polish and all beef dog and can do them "Chicago Style". Saw the burgers cooking and they looked like Frozen pre-formed burgers. They serve a variety of sandwiches and the ones I saw coming out looked pretty good, Especially the Italian Beef! It was LOADED with beef and served on a good looking roll. That's going to be my next order. I asked the fellow who ate it how it was. He said he's from Chicago and it was "Excellent". Chicagoans should know right? The place is clean but still a hole-in-the-wall atmosphere which is great with me. Worth stopping in if you're in the area. Next time I talk to the owner, I'm going to try to convince him to go to fresh cut fries. Hours are: Mon-Tues 7AM to #PM Wed to Sat 7AM to 7PM Closed Sun

Viennas in Arizona. That's awesome -- I'll have to try that place next time I'm in Phoenix. Have you tried Ted's Hot Dogs in Tempe? Had that last year, thought their food was really good.

You can get Vienna's at many places all over town. I'm a "Regular" at Teds. Their White Hots & their Polish are good too. Be sure to get their own hot sauce on your dogs.

So who are the new owners? We ate there not too long ago and Brad and Linda Burkey owned it. Good people...they had just opened it last May but they're not from Chicago? I wonder if it is under new management, again.

I was only there once when she owned it but the Burkeys have cleaned it up and made it presentable as hot dog joints go. I had the Italian Beef there last week and it was good. Shaved beef of a good roll with good sauce and grilled onions.

The White Hots -- is that veal? I've been a little hesitant to try those, mainly because I know I love the all-beef hot dogs and having a taste for one is the main reason I went in. I'm going to spring training next year and I'll make sure to try one. I figured there'd be plenty of all beef stands with the Cubs and Sox having spring complexes in the area.

I'd be curious as to whether the Italian Beef was a packaged product from Vienna. They are pushing the combo of their hot dogs and the Chicago Hot Dog condiments and Italian Beef supplies all over the country now.

Bonk; Spring Training out here is a blast! More teams coming and new, super neat Ballparks coming every year. The Cubs have been here the longest I think. They play at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa- http://hohokamstadium.com/Home.aspx It's an older Stadium and has Spring Training nostalgia like Wrigley. The West Valley has the newest parks. Phoenix, Scottsdale and the East Valley have the older parks. The D'backs are negotiating to get out of Tucson and come up here. My guess is that any team that is not on the east coast will be out here in the next 2-3 years. Check out http://www.cactusleague.com/ While there are a number of Midwest style hot dog & beef joints out here, they're not as plentiful as in the Midwest. You'll have to hunt for them as opposed to tripping over them. Cincinnati Chili???? FAGATABOUTIT! RE; White Hots, yes they contain veal and are milder than a beef dog, A fine grind of the meat but good. For a good White Hot and a Chargrilled dog I recommend Ted's in Tempe. http://www.tedsonline.com/
