A Roadfood Tour of Chicago's South Suburbs Wed, 02/25/09 9:36 PM (permalink)
To all roadfooders in the Chicago area and beyond....
At the suggestion of our friend BuddyRoadhouse, I am organizing a day-long tour of several restaurants in the south suburban region of Chicago. At this time I have a tentative list of five places that I've been to, where I feel that the food is worthy of roadfooders' attention. The five are: Popolano's ( fried chicken ), Simply Slices ( thin-crust pizza ), Nick's Barbeque ( ribs ), the Country House ( burgers ), and Cunis Candies ( ice cream. ) This list is, of course, not carved in stone; I'm open to suggestions from potential attendees who know the area ( maybe we can even squeeze in a sixth stop; Portillo's does a dynamite italian beef. ) As to a date, I'm thinking of possibly sometime in mid to late August. So whaddaya think, folks? Feedback please.....                                  Bob

I'll need to pace myself so I don't explode before we hit the fourth stop, but it all looks good to me.  Time of the year should be good too.  You'll probably need to refresh this thread as we near the actual tour date.

You're kidding about Portillo's, right? (Although their cake has ruined me for all other chocolate cakes, EVER)

Kidding or not, I don't think I'd be able to stand up after fried chicken, pizza, Barbecue, burgers, and dessert.  Portillo's (or any other place for that matter) would be one Roadfood stop too far...

Okay, okay, I can take a hint! You're right; forget Portillo's. Five places is enough. Aimee, what's wrong with Portillo's? Did you have a bad experience there?

              nocarolina,
I can't give you a definitive yes until a date is named.  But no hurry on that.  You know I will do my best to be there.

You really are jumping in both feet first.....you deserve credit!!!

CTD, glad to have you aboard. The date for this thing is really up in the air, since I'm going to try to accomodate everyone's schedule ( I'm assuming a Saturday works best for folks - feedback needed. ) The only one of the three Country House locations that I've been to is the original in Clarenden Hills, so that's the intended "target".

Sundays are the best day for me, but if given enough notice, I can make a Saturday work.  Are all these places open on Sunday?

Buddy, I'm afraid Sundays are out. Cunis Candies is closed that day, and since old-fashioned ice cream parlors are among Buffetbuster's favorite places, that stop is a must. I'll make sure everyone has plenty of advance notice on the date ( at least four weeks. ) Actually, I can't set a date until I've had feedback from everybody involved, plus we're talking about something over five months away, so discussing dates might be a bit premature right now. Like I said, though, I'll eventually need feedback from all potential attendees to come up with a day that works for everyone.

Although I would love to visit Cunis Candies, there is no guarantee that I will be able to attend the Meet-n-greet.  If you need to switch it to a Sunday so that more people can make it, don't let me stand in the way.  If I do get out to Chicago, you and I could go on Saturday.

Not to say that Cunis' ice cream and candy isn't very good (it is and I remember them very well from Chicago's South Shore area near where I earlier lived), but there are -- in my personal estimation only -- two slightly better specialty ice cream and rich chocolate candy shops in the south suburbs, in which I lived in for over 30 years of my life.  The old fashioned ice cream and candy shops often are not open on Sundays in the winter, but probably will be in the summer.  (The chains like Coldstone, which are pushing the old ones out of business unfortunately, are open on Sundays normally.)  And Mitchell's in Homewood (formerly from 71st St. on Chicago's south side) I remember as always being open on a Sunday and they are great, too.  Mitchell's is one of the best places to get homemade milk chocolate chip ice cream anywhere in the world.  But my personal favorite has been the Greek Grandfather PappaGeorge's famous ice cream at Gayety's on Ridge Rd. in Lansing, IL (http://www.gayetys.com/history.html).

Although I have long been familiar with Mitchell's in Homewood, I have never actually been in there; with Cunis so close, I never felt the need to try it. I have been to Gayety, but I didn't care for it at all. Cunis has been "my" ice cream shop for almost forty-five years, and I can't imagine any other place being as good, let alone being better.

Another fact about Cunis Candies: thanks to South Holland's antiquated and , IMO, unconstitutional "blue laws", Cunis is always closed on Sunday. The owners couldn't open on Sunday if they wanted to. Even the big Jewel/Osco supermarket and all but one or two gas stations are closed on Sunday. Why the US Supreme Court hasn't done something about this nonsense, I'll never understand.

My friends and family all prefer Gayety's over Cunis' but different likes and dislikes are what makes the world go around, right?.  I just got an email back from Gayety's customer service and they are open on Sundays all the time from noon till 9 p.m.  They are the best in my book.        --BTB

Aimee, I had that chocolate cake recently, and while I didn't find it "orgasmic", it sure was some damn good cake. And Christin, I'm very glad to hear that you'll probably be joining us. BTW, thanks for the Nawlins hotel recommendation; I've got my rez made and I'm getting ready to hit the road next week.

I'd like to have a rough idea of how many people will be part of the South Suburban meet n' eat, so if you're planning on attending or even seriously considering it, please give a yell and let me know. Thanks.

I am going to try my best, but no promises.  I will know more once a date is set.

Barring any major family commitments (and I won't know until we firm up a date), you can count on two Roadhouses to attend.

Just a note on choosing the date: August 14th & 15th are the primary days of this year's Milwaukee Irish Fest, which Mrs. Roadhouse and I usually attend.  Not a deal killer mind you, but if we can avoid that weekend it would be just fine.

                                                    Hello all ,

Although I won't be able to make it to the Windy City I do have fond memories of ther South Side . Back in 95 and 96 we marched in the St. Pats Day Parade . The south side was the best , can't even tell you some of the places we hit but   the time spent was great , the people great , the food and drinks , you guessed it great .

August is pretty clear for me.  I usually do the Ginza Fest the second weekend in August (the 7th-9th), but I'm flexible about going Saturday or Sunday.

And of course, any Roadfooders who want to go to Ginza Fest with me are more than welcome- the BEST teriyaki chicken ever, fabulous udon and Pocky as far as the eye can see.  As well as cultural exhibits, information about Buddhism (no, they won't try to recruit you or anything) and really cool Taiko, Kendo and Japanese folk dancing performances.

Since photos of Popolano's and Cunis were posted on another thread ( Buffalo Tarheel's South Chicago/Northwest Indiana trip report ), I thought I'd post a few pictures of the other three places that will be on this tour. Here's the Country House in Clarendon Hills...

... and here is their delicious Country Burger. It's a half-pound of quality ground beef, charbroiled just the way you like it. I get mine medium rare on the very good dark bread. The steak fries and cole slaw are great too.
