Wal Mart Sushi - Thu, 04/9/09 3:32 PM
0

Has anyone out there have tried sushi from Wal Mart ?  It sound like a set up for a joke but it's actually pretty good.  I don't know how it compares to other types of sushi because it's the only place I've tried it from, (almost.)

In my opinion, anyone who buys sushi from a Walmart deserves a medal for bravery.

I have it on good authority that they only decided to start selling sushi when their Live Bait division failed.

I won't eat sushi from most actual restaurants unless they're within sight of an ocean.  Completely aside from the Walmart issue and the fact that I refuse to set foot in one, why would you eat sushi from a grocery store in general?  Do they make it in front of you or is it pre-packaged?

Interestingly, at two supermarket chain stores I go to in Central Ohio, Kroger and Giant Eagle, they make the stuff when you walk up and order it.

I can see possibly being tempted to try it in that case...but probably not.  I just ate sushi at a local place (Grand Rapids, MI) a month or so ago that was...OK...I guess.  I just can't wrap my head around grocery store sushi.

Oh, I do not do bait. Had some in Japan back in the '50s. Never again. I understand it is an acquired taste. Fortunately, I am not into piscine acquisition.

Your Krogers must be way ahead of the curve!!!!!!!!!  BTW they are clueless about Taylor Pork Roll products here in Sardinia.

I think the fact that several of the Kroger stores around here stock Taylor pork roll probably has a lot to do with the fact that there are tons of people here from the East Coast.

That is right - it is an international supermarket - unique in most every way.

I am well-known as a sushi wiener--I pretty much only eat the cooked stuff, although I love that.  But I try to avoid any grocery store or buffet sushi that serves the prepackaged stuff.  Not that I'm sure it's not *cough* fine--my son eats it all the time--but I'm not willing to bet my gastrointestinal health on it.

I'm with you Nancy, Lunds and Byerly's grocery stores have sushi but I only get the ( cooked )  Eel, shrimp, egg and tofu puffs. anything wrapped in nori gets way too CHEWY and not in a good way... I have bought sushi rice from them along with a nice hunk of Ahi ( ) from the fish counter and made my own nigiri sushi.  Peace, Dawn

My concern would be how long it had been sitting around and how many days ago was it made. Happily we have 2 very good sushi places within 2 miles from home so we wouldn't buy anyway.

Walmart for Sushi...NEVER!

I've bought Sushi from a Whole Foods store that is just down the street from where I used to work. Excellent quality, made fresh in front of you.The Seaweed salad was excellent too!

Since I eat sushi from Publix, I don't see why Walmart would be a problem.

My two local A&P supermarkets and Kings supermarket have sushi chefs who make sushi for customers right on the spot. My local Shop Rite supermarket in Hilsdale,NJ get's theirs predone from a Japanese restaurant namd Matsu. Their's is great. They charge less then they do in the restaurant  alsofer miso soup and seaweed salad.  Do Publix and Walmart make their own in store?

It's prepackaged.  You can find it next to the deli counter, (assuming all Wal Mart grocerys are set up the same way.)

Nearly all sushi found in grocery stores is pre-packaged, machine made, and delivered frozen.  It has literally been food engineered to go from frozen to cooler shelf, from the variety of rice used, to chemical additives to fillings.

I admit I'm a sushi snob.  I find it poor texture and bland in flavor.  And considering it's faily low quality, not that good of a price either.

I cannot conceive of how it is an option for anyone to eat RAW FISH that they don't know how fresh it is.  Especially if it comes pre-packaged so you don't even know how long ago it was cut and put together.

Guess I'll stick to real sushi from a decent restaurant.  Which reminds me, syrupy...d'you ever get to downtown Detroit at all?  Stop by Fishbones, right around the corner from the Greektown casino.  They not only have the best Cajun food I've had in Michigan, they do sushi that will make your mouth do a happy dance after eating pre-packaged stuff from Wal-Mart.  Of course, your mouth will also reach up and slap you across the face if you try to eat Wal-Mart sushi again, but at least you'll understand the instinctive horror most of us feel when you mentioned it.

You've gotta be careful with sushi in Michigan...we're a long flight from anything like a coast, and most places don't fly fresh in every day.  I would have to assume Wal-Mart of all places makes theirs in some central location and then ships it nationwide, and the original fish more than likely is farm-grown in China.  I would not be willing to take that chance.

Haven't tried it at Walmart. They do make it fresh at H.E.B. Grocery everyday, right in front of you, and you can oder from them platters of the stuff.

The freshest sushi i ever had in recent years, was in 1996, after my dad passed away, and my sister and I went to Las Vegas. We had sushi  in the Sushi Bar at the San Remo, where we were staying. It was very good. Had some good sushi also  at  a couple of places in the New York-New Jersey area, my sister and her fiance live in Piermont,NY, but I forgot  the names of these two places.

I haven't had a car in a while so I'm limited in the places I can go.   The last time I ate in Greektown was about eleven years go.

Within walking distance from me is a Coney Island, Two party stores, (a convience / liquor store for people outside the Detroit area) and a take out chinese place, (no Sushi.)

Come to think of it it's kind of weird that a person with no car is posting a lot on Roadfood.com.

In my experience, all of the sushi I have seen packaged at grocery stores-even those with Japanese chefs cutting fish in person at the store- has been filled with chemical additives and preservatives that should be no way close to sushi in any form. Sushi needs to be impeccably fresh and of the highest quality. I would not eat Walmart sushi.

The "Japanese" chefs at almost all of those supermarket sushi counters are as authentic as the sushi itself--in other words, NOT.

In most cases, the staff is actually Chinese.  My former SO, who is Chinese, used to delight in eavesdropping on their conversations in either Cantonese or Mandarin dialects.   Yes, I know that this is not really significant, but it is just part of the total picture of the marketing of a product that is not necessarily what it appears to be.

Ohh, and cook some Comet rice to ladle it all across since the sushi rice is now a part of the "seafood fritter " it has become.

Papa there is always homemade tartar sauce, cocktail sauce with a habanera kick, lemon-horseradish aioli, and a sweet & sour sauce spiked with thai chili. That would be 5 with the one I already mentioned.

     I stand corrected, (kind of)

I was at Wal Mart last Saturday and saw a man making sushi.  In the 20 plus times I've been there this is the first time I saw somebody doing that.  So I guess it's made fresh at the store, though I'm not sure how fresh the ingredients are.

Altho i admit I would be very hesitant about getting prepak sushi at WalMart, I have been to Costco in Hawaii where they sell about 12 variations of poke (hawaiian style sashimi). We buy tubs of the stuff to take to the beach or other such picnic....bkk
