Johnsonville Beer Brauts - Sun, 04/26/09 7:02 PM
4.33
Found these for $2.50 for a package of six at Wal-Mart. They say they have Miller beer in them.

Grilled them last night and served them with some good soft honey wheat rolls with saut. onions and spicy mustard. They were pretty good and I will definitely buy them again. Everyone in the family seemed to enjoy them.

I saw those advertised and wondered how they were. Too bad they don't come in PBR flavor.

Testimonial............. Johnsonville brats are my favorite! Ann Peeples(living in Milwaukee, roadfood compadre) ranks J'ville's right at the top of her list!!!!!!!!! Annie knows her sausages!
They're delicious if you prep. with loving care.
Dennis in Cary, simmer the brats in PBR, onions, spices, etc.until plump and juicy.

I Found those same brats at a surplus food outlet here in West Michigan back in late January  They had cases of them in their freezer for $1.10 for the package of 6 all marked with a 02/25/09 sell date if not frozen.  They are precooked so only need to be thawed and crisped up

I bought 6 packs of them but I haven't fired up the grill yet to try them out but they did sound good and the price was great.

Thanks Roux, may just have to do that. Does the beer really make that much of a difference?

Love the Johnsonvilles!  Simmer then in a cheap lagar (nothing hoppy) and onions, finsh off on the grill.  Yum!

Why is the first post in this thread flagged as inappropriate? Just who is out of his or her gourd this time?

Johnsonville makes an excellent product.  the only negative is their high fat content.  But, you only live once.  Try their Italian sausages, too.

My neighbor simmers them in beer and then finishes them on the BBQ..try them with French's horseradish mustard..Take some kraut and add some caraway seeds and onions..Good eating!

Johnsonville brats aren't bad at all, and if one doesn't have access to better ones they're fine. I find that simmering brats of any type in beer with sliced onions before browning them on the grill really gets the job done.

I agree, Mr.Hoffman-I have had better at my local butcher-but I have to drive a ways to get them.I think, however, if you can get them, their Italian sausage is better... Thanks Baah Ben-we agree!!! And by the way, just to be a food snob, they are spelled Brats-not Brauts....

Why would it ruin your brat? I simmer in water (why waste beer?) and finish off on the grill with good results.

Ben, speaking of fat content... I bought some Honeysuckle White turkey bats. I just put em under tha broiler. With the right mustard and some kraut they were not bad. 80% less fat than pork they said.

My grandzillas love the Johnsonville pre cooked. They just nuke em, then wrap in a flour tortilla w/ a bit of plain mustard. Hey, they can cook those for themselves! :~)

I guess that makes you #1.

Try a taste test Michael.  Until you do, shut up.

I know why you use the simmer crutch.  But experience shows that grilled bratwurst are superior without it.

I have to admit I have only grilled mine and never simmered. But to each his own is how I see it. I do plan to try simmering half before grilling and do the other half straight up grilled. I'll have to see which way I prefer.

I grilled (only) bratwurst for years, until I learned the proper way to do them -- simmer first to cook them through, and then grill them to brown them up. And if you don't mind I'll not shut up. Not for you and not for anyone.

I think I will simmer my turkey brats in Shiner Bach, onions, and jalapenos next time... and then broil them. That might be the proper Texas way to do turkey brats? Na, simmer and then grill over Mesquite. :~)

I Found those same brats at a surplus food outlet here in West Michigan back in late January  They had cases of them in their freezer for $1.10 for the package of 6 all marked with a 02/25/09 sell date if not frozen.  They are precooked so only need to be thawed and crisped up

Shen, if the OP is referring to these brats and you have the same ones they're definitely not precooked.  You might want to doublecheck to avoid any kind of unpleasant surprise.

Johnsonville's recommended use of beer while cooking can be found here.  I personally prefer to either smoke bratwurst or grill it over lower heat; it's not necessary to char the casing in order to cook it all the way through.

For what it's worth I never simmer before grilling and I usually only cook brats for a crowd as not everyone in my family likes them. I put them on a nice hot grill and get them nice and brown and crispy and then while they are still slightly under cooked i put them into an aluminum disposable pan that is filled with beer, butter and onion that has been sitting on the grill. This way I can cook in smaller batches and toss into the pan.. And when I am all done grilling the brats and they have "simmered" on the Q' for a little bit. Everyone can dig in and eat at the same time and I am already done grilling and can enjoy the company.

A pet peeve of mine is my local grocery store's meat counter and their store made brats.  Their stright up normal brat is pretty decent.  But they also sell along side of it their "Taco Brat", "Chipolte-Lime Brat", "Teriyaki Brat", and the seasonal "Pumpkin Spiced Brat".

As horrific as they sound, I had to try them out of sheer morbid curiosity.  I tried to keep an open mind and open palate too.  I seriously did.

They &%^$&% suck as much as you think they would.

The Eternal Question Rages On!!!-----
Grill THEN Simmer---OR
Simmer THEN Grill????????

This subject is discussed on another thread
http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/tm.aspx?m=433338&high=Bratwurst

The other caveat is-----------DON'T Simmer at all!!

Well Toad, I too am a brat traditionalist as well but I must say that my local butcher, Besey's Meat Market, makes some fresh brat blends that are just down right delicious. Such as the Jalapeno Brat, the Bacon Cheddar brat and your not gonna believe this one but some really tasty turkey brats. Gotta love your local homegrown butcher!

Its funny, there really is a divided community among people about simmering or not.I have had both. My brother-in-law makes great brats without the pre beer boil. Wonderful. I pre-boil with beer an onions and they are wonderful.I like seatowns idea-put them in beer, butter and onions just before they are done.

My favorite brand of Brats is Kayem.  They make a "Pale Ale" Brat.  It has a fantastic beer flavor.

Their suggested cooking method is to simmer in beer with a sliced onion, and then finish on the grill.  This has always worked out well for me.

As I noted earlier, your post wasn't about hotdog carts or ancillary topics (e.g. where to buy hotdog carts, what to name my hotdog cart, what are the best hotdog cart sinks, what kind of hotdogs should I buy, etc.).  As you must have observed yourself, since the new software was adopted, there is a rule that at least two-thirds of all posts be about hotdog carts.

Because there is sone dumbo out there with nothing else to do.  There have been several posts  flagged as inappropritate.  Don't worry about it as the moderators know who is flagging posts and I am sure that the person will be warned how 'inappropriate" he is to do this.

Seatown,
My error - The brats I picked up for $1.10 per pkg. were actually Hillshire Farms Beer Brats and yes, they are precooked.  Haven't tried them yet but probably will this weekend.

A brat made with sauerkraut?

Well I have been to Johnsonville's Brat Day's in Sheboygan a couple of times and yes some of the vendors do simmer before as well as after. That's okay though your from Chicago and probably a Bears fan so I won't hold it against you......lol.

I'm pretty sure they don't simmer the brats in Sheboygan WI. I don't do it either.

Well, that would depend on who you mean when you say "they".

My grandfather & uncle both cook them this way & "they" both live in Sheboygan. I'm not pretty sure, I'm very sure since I've seen them both cook them this way.

In my distant history I was known to serve charred Brats on the outside while pink on the inside.  Due to this, I moved to simmering in beer and onions first, grilling, then if I have to hold, back into simmering beer and onions.

Having been to Germany, I've seen plenty of German friends, family, neighbors simmer their Brats before grilling.  Anyone who insists it's taboo needs to take a educational trip to the brat motherland. It's fully accepted, though neither demanded or admonished.

Personally, I like to Nuke them in the Microwave and watch them explode all over the place!

Whats up with Roadfood lately?  Ever since Micheal H said its turned into a suck up site, it's whiplashed into a mud slinging fest.

Johnsonville brats are ok in a pinch, but I prefer the local variety when I can get them.  GW sausage company in St. Louis makes an excellent brat; even some of the grocery stores make a better fresh brat than Johnsonville.

That being said, grilling is the way to go; serve them on a lightly toasted bun with spicy brown mustard, some grilled onion, or chopped raw onion, and wash it down with a cold beer.  Repeat as needed.  I find two brats and three beers about the right ratio.

You're welcome, Annie. It's like ketchup on a hotdog, a personal preference.

Except that simmering brats before grilling is perfectly acceptable while ketchup on a hot dog is downright wrong
