Yeah you can get me a law degree from UM, I've always wanted one of those :)  I want to make sure about one thing, these are "berry", not boysenberry.  Is that the same?  The Hostess site only lists berry, so I'm assuming here.  Yeah, they are in all the major grocery chains here.  If they're out of any flavor, its usually chocolate.  I'll let you know if the postage is huge before sending.  Otherwise, don't worry about it.

I thought they were called "blackberry" officially...maybe it's berry tho.  I have  never heard of boysenberry--it exists?

thanks

Had my first Hostess Blackberry Pie (thank you Bill!) and it is absolutely delicious. The filling is absolutely top notch, and there is a lot of it. Doesn't taste artificial, or overly sweet--just a great snack pie. It is a crime these aren't sold all over.

Apple, cherry, lemon, blackberry, pineapple, strawberry, French apple.

I seldom see anything but the first 4 types.

I have never seen pineapple or French Apple--EVER. Never saw blackberry until 2 days ago.  There is also Chocolate Pudding and Peach which their site doesn't mention---which is very common, at least in my neck of the woods.

I've had them all except the pineapple. I saw a wrapper for one once on the internet, but thats as far as I got.

The French Apple came in a red and blue wrapper and it was one of their normal apple pies with raisins added.

I remember eating the teenage mutuant ninja pies too when they were available years ago. Pudding pie with green frosting.

Anyone know what part of the country have pineapple and french apple? I have never seen either.

I too remember the ninja turtle pies--they have quite a cult following. I wish they did some more promotional flavors like that. I also remember the chocolate pies with vanilla pudding in the mid 80s. they weren't out long--but were awesome.

Blackberry HAS to be my new fave with Cherry/Chocolate pudding not far behind. Peach is up there is as well. Apple seems to have been changed up over the past year or so--at least with my local bakery--a TON of cinnamon.  Lemon is good but I only get a hankering every once in awhile. Still devastated blueberry is discontinued. And strawberry is hit and miss.  Seems like if you get a VERY fresh one it is pretty good--but the filling doesn't hold up as much as the others.

hey, what did you think of the all-american pies?
To me,  they seem more fruity and less sugary.

I liked the all american pies actually. Though I like the Hostess filling much more. Thanks again! You get my PM?

As far as how East they go. I do know the Cutie Pie line from Horizon (same pie but smaller) is pretty common and all the Wall Marts around here carry boxes of them in various flavors. Not bad, and inexpensive.

Hard to find any other flavors here in Alaska other than Apple, Lemon, Cherry, and Chocolate. I have a Hostess thrift store next to the restaurant and still have not found any of the more esoteric flavors here.

funny david, I talked to the lady at our local hostess thrift,
And she reported everyone complaining they could get chocolate in
California but not here. :)
Exotic is whatever one can't get, I guess. No French Apple or Pineapple here ever, according to her.

Yes, I have a Hostess outlet right down the street from me--I try to limit my visits. Generally, they have a combination of 5 pies, twinkies, zingers, cupcakes, etc. for $3.80, I think--not bad. They are generally closer to the expiration date than what you would find at the store---though. Not always, sometimes they are just what the driver had left over after restocking all the stores shelves and you still get very fresh ones. Besides, the only ones I have found that the sell by date really effects it is the cinnamon struesel cakes--which get really dry.

alright, Kevin & Todd. Success is here. There was a period here where they were all closed dated; the clerk said these must be a new production run. Don't know whether they had to ramp up for green and purple snowballs or what, but expect your party paks soon.
Sorry for the delay, but I thought you guys would appreciate the difference.

A big Huzah! for Bill! Much appreciation sir! No need to apologize for the delay

The outlet by me has been running a special .59 for the pies (limit 10).  I stopped in there the other day and they only had 3 left (all Peach). I bought them. And the dates are all the end of the month, not bad.

It wasn't going out of the way, as much as waiting for the right moment to pounce. I had the clerk snag em for me, as I think I took a whole week's allocation.  I left the shelves empty. :)

So, this comes directly from a Hostess rep and tells us what pies are available, what pies are seasonal, what pies are regional, and what pies are discontinued:

Our Cherry, Apple and Lemon Fruit Pies are available year
round, nation wide.

-          Peach and Strawberry Pies are seasonal pies that are only
available from late spring until early winter.

-          Chocolate and Blackberry pies currently have limited
distribution. Our Chocolate Pudding Pie can be found across the nation,
except for in the New England Area including MD, PA, NY, DE, NJ and all
states north of this area. Our Blackberry Pies can only be found in the
Greater North West including WA, OR, ID and western MT.

-          French Apple, Pineapple, Blueberry and Pecan Pies are
currently discontinued; they are no longer in production.

Hmm, strange that i stopped up at Sheetz today coming into work and they had plenty of Chocolate pies. The vending machine at work is filled with them too (Pittsburgh PA by the way). Oh well.

Many, many thanks go out ot Bill Voss. Recieved a package in the mail yesterday before going to work. I opened it up and was shocked to see that I recieved much more than I had asked for. Bill threw in a couple of bags of Kettle chips (sweet onion and buffalo bleu,,,cant wait to try them) and some regional candies that i've never heard of. I just ate the Peanut butter Mountain and it was good. The Hostess Blackberry pie was just as I remembered from 20 years ago. Awesome.

I'm going to try to have a Berry pie comparison this weekend to report back on. My son and daughter and I will be the tasters. I'll have the Hostess, All American, Dolly Madison, and a JJ's that i've found at the dollar market to test. Should be a good time.

Anyways, thanks again Bill and I feel I owe you now. You've gone well above what was asked for and if you ever want something from over here on the east coast, you wont have to do anything more than just ask.

Can't wait for mine! WHOOT!

I actually had a JJ's berry pie yesterday---very good. But quite different from Hostess.  Dolly Madison pies? Those still exist? Do you mean Little Debbie Blackberry pie?  Anyway enjoy the taste test!

For my money the berry pies would rank as follows:

1. Hostess
2. All American (wish we had the brand here)
3. JJs
4. Little Debbie (tho Little Debbie and JJs seem like the exact same pies)

Same here, Bill. Though I think most of what Michigan is known for--Better Maid chips, Vernors, Faygo, etc. is available elsewhere.

Dolly Madison pies are still marketed by Hostess Brands, the new name for IBC, Interstate Bakeries Corporation, in various places around the country. What I don't know is if they are merely Hostess pies  sold in Dolly Madison packaging. IBC (owner of Dolly Madison) merged with Continental Baking (owner of Hostess) in 1995.

Just finished one of the All-American Pies...that is quite good. I'm very impressed with the filling.  Lots of the little seeds---doesn't taste artificial. Hostess does a better crust.

We don't have All American Pies around here that I have seen--but I have seen Cutie Pies (made by the same outfit Horizon), so I assume these are essentially the same--just bigger (Cutie pies are the Drakes type size). The Cutie Pies were just ok--never seen blackberry tho. Maybe they just do this one especially.

God, I'm a loser, lol.  My buddy and I at work always have a laugh at how often the conversation turns to snack cakes/pies

I'm sorry. I meant Little Debbie and not Dolly Madison. I plan to do the taste test tomorrow with the kids. If Nickles made a blackberry pie, the contest would be over before it started. Their pies are the best, but their round and come in little tins. Like actual pies, but they blow the doors off of the regular snack cakes.

Well, I tried to get a taste test together, but failed as usual. I found out a few things though, first my kids dont like blackberry pie. Second, fruit pies dont freeze well and thats an understatement. I couldnt even find a little debbie berry pie now so they are probably a seasonal item.

Anyways, Hostess won with All-American coming in second and JJ's third. Thanks again to Bill. I loved and ate everyone of those pies even if I had to microwave the three I froze.

Hmm. I have never attempted to freeze them. Now I know never to try! Sorry, tho

Just got back from vacation in Ft. Myers Beach, FL

Was very excited to see Entemann's pies in the local Publix. I have seen the tart style pies, but have never seen the hand snack Hostess style pies--tho, I have heard they were branching out into the snack cake market.  They had apple and cherry ($1.49) and they are quite good. I generally prefer cherry, but the apple filling was delicious.  Also, got a pack of their chocolate cupcakes (pretty much a direct knock off of the Hostess).  Hoping to see them in my area, as Entemann's is all over the place.

Also, gave a Mrs. Freshley's pie another shot (at a gas station in Chatanooga).  I am now 0 for 2.  I got one in Northern Michigan and it was SQAUSHED completely and the wrapper was stuck to the filling. This one was ROCK hard and you could barely break it in half. The I noticed the expiration was March 7th...nearly two months ago. Ahh, well.

Excellent, I will have to drive to the Hostess outlet this week and get my first Strawberry of the year!. They usually have them for .78 and sometimes .59.  And there are plenty with expiration dates 2 weeks plus away to boot

I was completely intrigued by this thread, which seemed in equal parts ridiculous and mad.  Hostess?, I thought.  Really?  The same company whose Twinkies and King Dons (or whatever they're called these days) quit tasting like food and more like chemical sludge at least twenty years ago, inspiring such loyalty?

Curious, I made my way to the thrift store nearest me in Marietta, where I found these pies at 65 cents apiece, or eight for $5.  I picked up 4 strawberry, 2 lemon and 2 apple (leaving the cherry behind), figuring that if I didn't like them, my daughter and her friends would probably eat them.

The strawberry is unreasonably delicious.  I just could not believe how darn good it was.  I would have had another Monday night, but the darn things are total calorie bombs and I can only afford one a day (if that).  The lemon, sampled Tuesday, was also excellent.  I've been missing out!

Wednesday, business took me back by the Hostess store - actually it's a "Merita" store, all one company - so I stopped in, and they were completely wiped out of strawberry.  The clerk told me that the local bakery does not make blackberry, but they do make chocolate.  They should have had chocolate when I stopped in on Monday, but the other person didn't order correctly, that it didn't surprise her that the strawberries were gone already as those are the most popular, and that if I return this Monday, I should be able to get more strawberry and, hopefully, chocolate.

Yum!  Thanks, Roadfooders!

Welcome to the dark side. Yes, blackberry is only available in the West..can't  get them here in Michigan either.  Chocolate is probably my fave besides the blackberry. Cherry  is hard to beat too....that filling is delicious.

Haven't gotten a strawberry yet this year, the outlet didn't have any.  hopefully this week! Oddly enough, strawberry seems to be the lone flavor that I haven't seen any of the other brands  offer.

I'll have to check the Hostess outlet that my SO's aunt goes to in Michigan, since they seem to always have weird flavors (and they are the only place outside of the Southwest where I've seen Chocodiles[1] in recent history)

[1] Had to bring back some of these from a business trip to SoCal to prove to a coworker that these really existed.

I live in Central New Jersey and was unable to find Hostess strawberry pies. So I emailed the company and received the following response:

"We are sorry that you have been unable to find our Hostess Strawberry Pie. Unfortunately, our Hostess Strawberry Pie is not available this summer."

They're certainly available around here. I saw them, and cherry, apple, peach and chocolate at the Wonder outlet store near my house on Friday.

Perhaps your local bakery isn't doing it this year?  We certainly have them in abundance in the south.

On the other hand, I haven't seen peach yet.  I live in the Peach State and the store near me doesn't have peach yet.  What the heck?

That is interesting.  Obviously, based on the pic, they are being made this year. Maybe not all bakeries, tho?

Usually, come May I see them all over the place. None so far and the Hostess outlet by my house doesn't have any as well. So, I guess not in out neck of the woods, yet at least.

The outlet always has peach

Compounding the craziness, the lady at my outlet just told me that we haven't had peach in Georgia for at least five years.  She even used the same metaphor as me: "We live in the Peach State!"

They did not get any new strawberry this week, but - and here's news - she did tell me that Georgia routinely gets blueberry once a year.  Mmmmm!  When are those in season?!

That is strange about the peach. Considering that blackberry is only available out west because there are so many blackberries out there. I am big fan of the peach pie, btw

Interesting about the blueberry. IBC said they were officially discontinued two years ago or so. That would be awesome. I miss those!

Apparently, Hostess fruit pies are like the NFL.

Upon further review, IBC has determined that strawberry fruit pies are available. I was told a sales manager would reply in 3-5 days with locations that should have them in stock.

I'm at work right now and the vending machine has a Strawberry pie with a Peach right behind it. Thought it was funny.

Just this past week I was at the Hostess outlet store in town, and found a peach pie for the first time.  Had to try it, but was disappointed in it.  Not much peach flavor at all.  They also had strawberry, apple and cherry available that day.  I am still waiting for a lemon to show up, but have never seen one here in northwestern Illinois.  I have also never seen a blueberry pie around here.  Since cherry is my pie of choice,  I am thankful that they are available year round.

Does anyone know where I can find the story about the armed robbery involving the Blueberry Pie?  We were just talking about it, but I can't find it anywhere.

I am a Blueberry nut, and I refuse to believe anything is discontinued, since people keep finding stuff after it's "discontinued."  My last Blueberry was in northern New Mexico, just shy of 2 years ago.  I found a Blackberry here in Colorado around the same time - I can't believe I was disappointed that it wasn't Blueberry!  Found a Chocolate tonight - which I haven't had since I was a kid.

Anyway, PLMK if you know where I can find the robbery story.

We have Peach, Strawberry, Lemon, Chocolate & Apple here at our Outlet store. No Cherry. No *SOB* Blueberry.

The lady at the counter said some farmer is trying to charge them $3.29/lb for blueberries & that is why they have been discontinued.

Luckily, I live in the Land of Kringle, and Blueberry Kringle tastes like Blueberry pie on crack.

Also it was sad to learn IBC stopped making the crusts with lard & went with good old fashioned HYDROGENATED OIL. I couldn't eat a Blueberry pie now even if I wanted to since I am ALLERGIC to that stuff. WHAT IS WRONG WITH GOOD OLD AMERICAN LARD, PEOPLE???!?!?!?!?!
