For any roadtripper who travels the I-15 from L A to Vegas, you should be aware of a Roadfood Institution located at the Yermo Exit about 9 miles N E of Barstow.  PEGGY SUE'S RETRO DINER has been serving pretty good roadfood burgers in a definite ambience that takes one back to the '50's R n R era. This is not a new place...it has been around for thirty years or so and keeps it's primitive (undeveloped) look about itself rather well. It sits across the "old Hiway" from the U S M C Rail loading facility.
  So Let the folks in merry Old Yorkshire think they have cornered the Market on Nostalgia...but the reality is that it is indeed alive and doing well in the Desert of SoCal !

Hey it is in California - not the Midwest...

I know the cost of food, my friend.....that is the reason I DONT live in California.

There is more to the story than the 'California Cost-of-Living!!

  Yermo, CA is a desert crossroads (literally), with a Marine Supply Depot next door and a RR Crew-change location as well.  Located about 10 miles east of Barstow (The Armpit of the Mojave) and 50 miles from Gas and Food at Baker (further towards Vegas) and you have an image of the 'end-of-the-world' mentality of the locals there. 

    As the website says these folks had a connection with the Knott Family (Think Knott's Berry Farm)... When Walter Knott bought the Calico Ghost Town (an abandoned silver mining community about 5 miles from Yermo) the plan was to develop the town into another entertainment center to appeal to the LA-Vegas tourists. The diner was to offer a food-stop next to the freeway to feed the travelers.  Well, the development faded out and the Knotts finally gave the Calico Ghost Town to the County to run as a regional park (which it does quite well.) The diner has hung on over the years, but , as you noted, it is sticking the prices out to snag the Vegas traveler...not the local train-chasing retired teachers !!! It is a fun stop, but I wouldn't order a major food group there !

I paid over a hundred dollars for hamburgers @ Hamburger Marys in Palm Springs.

There's been a Peggy Sue  BBQ for a long time in Dallas, Texas.   I think a previous owner may have been a  "Peggy Sue," but if not, well she finished highschool in the fifties and sure would have remembered Buddy Holly!

I don't think the prices are that outrageous --- some of the combos at our local Arby's cost almost as much.
I'm not sure how the food is, but I agree the ambience is the draw!

Al... given a choice, where would you prefer to have a meal on the way to/from Vegas... Peggy Sue's or The Mad Greek in beautiful downtown Baker?

I'm going with Peggy Sue's. The Mad Greek is subpar in the food department and insanely expensive for what you get. It's a desert tradition, high prices.

By the way, if Barstow/Yermo is the armpit of the Mojave, Baker would have to come in somewhat lower on the anatomy.

I would probably select Tom's Burgers in W.Barstow over either one...located right next door to the Mickey D's "Fancy"Train-Store. The food at Tom's is pretty good and the picnic tables outside are perfect for watching the eastern approaches to the BNSF Barstow Yard !

Peggy Sue's has it's own Rail Interest though. No tables available, but if you get your order to go you can sit in you car (climate permiting) and watch the military trains load and unload at the Yermo UPRR Yard. If you have never watched Tanks, etc, off-load, it is an interesting process.

Baker rates pretty much last on my list ! I prefer the 'Amboy Cafe'!
