Big Oak Drive IN - Sat, 05/23/09 3:08 PM

I had a chance to hit the Big Oak Drive In in Salter Path, NC recently.

The Big Oak calls itself "Home of the Best Shrimpburger on North Carolina's Crystal Coast".

I had the shrimp burger and onion rings. The shrimp burger was good, but not as good as El's in Morehead. El's shrimp were bigger (although Big Oak's were plentiful) and it was just a better burger (even after the slaw was added). The big Oak does get the nod for the onion rings. While not homemade they were cooked quite well. Also at the Big Oak you can walk to the beach and eat.

Food advantage El's
Location advantage Big Oak

Ahhh, El's and Big Oak drive-ins. I give the nod to El's on hwy. 70 in Morehead City the nod for burgers but prefer Big Oak for the shrimp burger. Personal preference is all. Thanks for the pics and posting.

Both look great to me!!! They certainly have a big menu... I would probably go for a fried oyster plate, and possibly the soft shell crab-things that are rare up here.

What sort of toppings and/or condiments are traditionally on a shrimpburger?  Before I saw the photo I was envisioning a patty made of ground shrimp, which probably wouldn't be that hard to do...

Usually cole slaw and cocktail sauce (or kethup).

jellybear, I prefer mine with out slaw, heavy on the cocktail sauce. And I love some hot crispy fries with it.

I'll have to try it with tartar sauce next time I am down to the coast. Most times when we go, we end up in Manteo or Hatterras though. I still love Sen. Basnight's place down there.
