Mosca,
I don't know of any of the hot dogs offerred at Wegman's that can be considered hot and peppery. Unless you are referring to Hofmann's coney/snappy grillers. They are peppery, but only hot compared to a regular hot dog. Hofmann's are fairly mild, but good. Hartmann's have a little more smoke flavor.
Yesterday and today I ate hot dogs. Sahlen's, Thumann's (beef/pork griller), Hartmann's beef wiener, Hartman's pork/beef 1/4 lb frank, and Best's skinless 8 to a lb beef dog.
Best's natural casing is much better on the grill after being heated in water and grilled. The skinless was ok. Hartmann's beef wiener was spicier than their regular wiener and had a very tangy flavor. Sort of vinegary/mustardy. Definitely not like a typical eastern U.S. kosher style dog. It was ok, but not near as good as their regular beef and pork wiener.
The Hartmann's beef and pork frank was 1/4 lb. Short and very thick. Too thick for my taste. But the dog was very good, tasting like their beef/pork wiener.
Sahlen's was very good. Haven't had one in about a year. Good full flavor with a nice slight peppery taste. I enjoyed it even more than the Hartmann's frank.
Thumann's was definitely the best of the bunch. Just a great meaty flavor. Like an exceptional ham. Admittedly my tastes are fickle, but the last couple of times I compared these dogs I preferred Thumann's.
