Yes, Primo's- a local chain of hoagie stores- was the audience choice at the contest although there was a comment that Primo's packed the audience with their followers.

Primo really is great (when it's great), but the thing is there are a lot of Primo franchises in the area, and the quality varies, in our experience, from pretty decent to terrific.  Near the high end of the scale is the Primo in Hamilton, NJ and near the low end is the Claymont, DE store.

Any reader poll will invariably be tilted toward a franchise operation with about three dozen local outlets.

Agreed.  I've had good luck at the Chadds Ford Primo and less so at Conshy.  I've not been to the one in Claymont which is closest to me and afraid to try the one in Bear-just not a hoagie kind of area.  As an aside, had a zep at Eve's last week, which I like, if for no other reason than saying "zep" takes me back to my childhood.  Although some don't like the roll, Sarcone's is still top of my list.

Primo's Old Italian!  I think the Old Italian is the best thing to get at Primo.

After a 9 year absence since my last visit, I'm delighted to see that Salumeria in the Reading Terminal Market is #3. I've never had a hoagie quite like the one I had there!

I couldn't agree more. There is one in Neshaminy Falls that is worse than Claymont. They have turned me off completely to Primos. Sometimes, quality takes a dive when you franchise.

I used to like the hoagies from Greenman's on Grant Ave near Bustleton.  I wonder if they are still there.  The hoagies were huge and stuffed with lots of good meats and cheese.

Wow, the Old Italian from Primos looks damn good to me...I love a sesame seed roll...and the ingredients look very generous.

Yes, Ann, that sandwich does look great.  All those subs on the East Coast that we have been seeing here make me very envious.  They do know how to be generous with ingredients.

Why are we so skimpy in the Midwest?  Even worse for me, this town is dominated by Subway.  They're everywhere.  And we have three Jimmy Johns, also not so generous.  College kids love them, and this is a big college town.

I would sure like one of your Gold Coasts again.

Primo's - The main concern of the founder has always been about (QC) quality control & consistenty. They are very strict about the way they set up & produce a hoagie. Problem I find with them are some of the kids that work at some of the locations are busy talking & not WORKING! I have gotten a great hoagie from Conshy & the next time it's just so so.
There have been times when they don't even bother to pick up the phone for take out orders. Even found girl's hair once.
Glenside & Doylestown location is better.  Even with all this, I find their Hoagies to be the best around for a franchise.

ChrisOC - The Greenman's moved just down the street 1 block. It's not the same hoagie from years ago. That location was in the italian hoagie competition & got real bad review.  (Mcnow said it taste like a bologna roll) Very large & no flavor.
Their original location in the old building (not buselton ave.) is MUCH BETTER!!!
