The Ayersian Ultimate Roadfood Trip Comes to Milwaukee

You may have missed this post about a long, long roundtrip Roadfood roadtrip being taken by Chris and Amy this Summer.  A dream for most of us, a forty day trip from coast-to-coast across the Northern U.S. and Canada (Can you imagine nocarolina's trip report if he took this trip?).

Chris and Amy will be in Milwaukee on Wednesday July 1 for the entire day.  Lunch and dinner Eat & Greets are being planned with butter burgers somewhere in the mix.  Please express your interest in joining and suggestions for restaurants here.

I have promised Chris and Amy I would meet them along the way on July 1.Am definately up for Sollys!! As for other suggestions, I have a million, but will pipe in as others respond..

Jim, you and everyone else had better hope that I never do make that journey, otherwise y'all will have the Roadfood equivalent of War and Peace to deal with!!

Ann - Too early for a flavor forecast, but I can't imagine a trip to Solly's without Kopp's for dessert.

I'm never sure, but isn't there some music thing going on in Milwaukee about that time?  Who is this Dylan fellow?

Jim, sadly I will be working at Burt's both Wednesday the 1st and Thursday the 2nd and will not be able to join you.  On the other hand, If you wanted to drive south and join me at Burt's for pizza, Wednesday's are not nearly as busy as the weekends.  You'd still need to call ahead, but it would be way easier to get in on the weekday...

Actually dinner is the only possibility but we'd be open to most any roadfood choice.

Depending on their route I could stand on the shoulder of the interstate and wave as they go by...perhaps if Chris has his window down I could try to toss him a burger from Dotty Dumpling's.

I have a 25-minute connection in MKE VERY early in the morning on the 1st.  If, for some reason, my flight out of KC gets delayed, I could miss my connection.  In that event, I could meet up with you guys (if someone can pick me up at the airport!).  Would love to stay and hang out - but, need to get my destination.  I have baseball tickets that night! 

That would be awesome, TTM. If nothing else, us early birds could meet you at the airport for breakfast.How early is early???

Ann - Glad to hear it. I'm looking forward to meeting you.    stricken - Thanks for the encouraging words. Frankly, I'm still a little concerned about whether people enjoy the lengthy, detailed trip reports that I like to do, or do they prefer the "Reader's Digest condensed version", without all the scenery-type text and photos. I certainly don't want to bore anyone with my stuff.        

I do love pictures & I have to admire your patience. I had tried to do the same with mine, but I just can't. It's easier for me to toss up an album. I do like the descriptions of the places as well. :)

Even if you were up at that hour, you would have to meet me at my gate with something "to go" and walk/run with me to my connecting flight!  Like I said, with that short a connection time, there is always a chance for a misconnection.

Sorry all--I don't yet have internet at home since moving so my RF response time is slow! So  excited that others may be able to join as well! We are also planning on RF-ing it up in Chicago the day before (June 30) if anyone (BuddyRoadhouse??) is interested...

Unfortunately, Tuesday the 30th is previously booked for me.  I did offer the suggestion to have you and my Milwaukee pals come down on July 1st for pizza at Burt's.  I'll be working there that evening from 4:30 to 9:00pm.  I realize you might want to focus on Milwaukee eats (Lord knows there's plenty to choose from up there), but if everyone else is interested, Wednesdays are the best time to try to get a leisurely meal at Burt's, avoiding the weekend crowds.

Your best bet on Tuesday the 30th might be to get in touch with nocarolina.  Bob has just joined our group recently, but he is a Roadfood fan from way back when and has a pretty good grasp of where to get good grub in Our Town, especially if you want to check out the often neglected south side neighborhoods.

This is pretty much Sollys menu-they start serving lunch at 10:00 a.m. I know Chris and Amy mentioned butter burgers in their original post, that is the reason I am suggesting this.What say you all??? Also,  a fun stop( after Kopps, of course) would be a trip to Gloriosos deli on Brady Street.Not far from Kopps.Best Italian deli in Milwaukee.Dont know if they will have a cooler.

Easily the best muff I've eaten besides Central Grocery in NOLA.
Granted, the bread is different but I'd really like to taste those two side by side.
He has both regular and a hot version to chose from.
He also has something called a Human Torch which has spicy red pepper relish,
some Italian cold cuts and the hot muffuletta (sic again) olive mix on it.
On my next visit I plan to see if that makes me become fickle!

Also My daughter has found a source for Sprecher Cherry Cola out in Baraboo, WI. Apparently Family Dollar Store out there has it for $2.50 a 4 pack....Thats half the price we pay down here--when we can find it here or on-line. So we will stock up when we head north in a few weeks.

Yesterday Mrs MFL and I re-visited Glorioso's I had The Human Torch described as consisting of Calabrese, Capocolla, Provolone, Hot Muffalatta olive mix & Hot Pepper Spread.
It was as hot as promised and tested my outer heat limits. Here's a pic I took:

Thanks for the heads up B U M.  Bobbi & I got our huge burgers and frozen custard waffle cones tonight.  She had Birthday Cake Custard and I had Oscar's Delight.  We used to eat at Oscar's all the time, but it had been a while.  Those are superior fast food burgers.

Chris & Amy - The gelato place in Vancouver that Bobbi mentioned to you yesterday is La Casa Gelato.  These are a few of the 218 flavors that were available when we last visited.  Among the choices - Dragon Fruit, Guava, Banana Walnut, Ginger, White Chocolate Bluberry, Nutella, and the ever popular Akbar Mashty.



Bobbi had Roche and Chocolate Fudge Gelato for her cone.

I am traditionally not a very big sub/sandwich guy as I tend to like burgers and pizza in favor. But I think I would definitely skip a lot of things for that beautiful looking specimen.

I have been thinking of famous traveling pairs that we could compare to these brave young Roadfooders, tripping merrily across the vast American Landscape. "Jane and Michael II" seems inappropriate !

 I started with the 'Don Quixote' team, but soon that lost it's validity. Then came 'The Lone Ranger and Tonto'. But that too became invalid.  Then I came up with Clark Kent (Superman) and Lois Lane. I think I am on the right track now !!
   For those of you who enjoyed Mischner's "Centennial" perhaps the central character in that historical novel...Levi Zendt and his bride would make a trekking comparison. We'll see when they reach the west coast, if they winter over in Astoria, Oregon, Perhaps the Lewis and Clark analogy will come forth !  Keep those wonderful reports coming.

Hey Al, we are stopping in Astoria, but it's more for the Goonies (an '80s film that we both grew up with) connection than anything.  And unless Superman has a growing RF gut, then that pair is out, too!    Chris
