Breakfast / Afternoon Snack in Brooklyn - Sheepshead Bay? - Fri, 06/19/09 8:44 AM

We'll be up briefly for a wedding, so not much time to travel very far.  We're staying on Emmons Ave near the actual bay.

The snack, if we can even get away, must be really close.  I'm more concerned about breakfast, which can be anywhere from Sheepshead Bay out to the Jersey Tpk.  We'll be heading home and will have a little more time to find a place and sit down.

This all happens this weekend (June 20-21) so any quick advice is appreciated!!  Thanks as always!

The Roast Beef at Roll n Roaster, Emmons and Nostrand Avenues, is really good:

Not open for breakfast, however.

EDIT: I never had breakfast down there, but Emmons Avenue is lined with restaurants. Nearby Sheepshead Bay Road also has many restaurants.

Randazzo's Clam Bar is by far the most famous restaurant in Sheepshead Bay.  I can't vouch for the food, unless you want a review from 1975, which was probably the last time I was there (the fried clams were great).

EDIT:  Now that I got myself thinking about Sheepshead Bay in the 70's, my fondest restaurant memories were of Lundy's, which at that time, was THE place to go for seafood in all of New York City.  It was very big news when it closed down in the late 70's after the death of the owner.  For the next 20 years, this gigantic restarant, right on the water, sat there all boarded up and rotting away.  Very sad.  I believe it reopened to some fanfare about 10 years ago, but it didn't last long.  I think it's just another shopping center now.

EDIT 2: I second the recommendation of Roll-N-Roaster.  Fantastic roast beef sandwiches.

Thanks for the replies -

Sat afternoon we may get to try Roll N Roasters.  It is only a block from where we are staying.

For an early "exit" Breakfast, I'm thinking about El Greco.  From what I read, it seems like a decent diner with an outdoor seating area and an established following.  It is also on our way home ;)

Any objections?

David - Roll n Roster has got to be there at least 35 years now.  Amazing.

Are you too young to remember Richard Yee's or the Sam Pan on Ave U.  Ratchlick's Bakery?  Jay's Deli on Ave J...

Many years ago, I had my car broken into at the El Greco diner, which was parked out back. Park your car where the diners can see it.  You might find the place fun. Last time I was there, there was a heavy Russian clientele. Do not get disturbed, Russia did not attack the USA while you were on the road.

Sorry, but to this day I seldom get to South Brooklyn. Anything I go to is right off the Belt Parkway. I've never to any of those other places you mentioned.

Ha!  That would be AWESOME!  We're making good money but driving a beater with 140K miles.  I would LOVE for someone to crash it or trash it - finally collect on some of those lousy insurance payments and give me a good excuse to buy a snappy new ride.

We'll be there early sunday and I'll park out back, maybe leave a playstation 2 on the dash as 'bait'.
Then again, I need to be back in Washington by lunchtime.  Maybe a bad idea after all.  ;)

UPDATE:

Went to RollNRoaster and the overall grade, for my wife and I, was so-so:
RoastBeef Sandwich, medium - RB was fine and juice was nice, but the whole thing was served below room temp.  Is that normal?
chili-cheese fries:  Awesome.  sometimes crispy, nice taste.
Veggies and cheese:  OK. Nothing special.
Sweet Potato - cold.  Again, is that normal?

El Greco, in a word, awesome!

I got a feta omelet with sausage and english muffin.  The omelet is cooked in a salty butter and was really perfect - and I'm picky with my eggs.   The english muffin was nice and fresh and not the tiny thomas' versions (though those are tasty too).  The sausage wasn't my taste, a little dense, but good.

My wife got two eggs scrambled and they were cooked perfect, and those must have been giant chickens to be only two eggs.

Service was fast and courteous and the prices were reasonable.

Thanks for the heads up everyone - the trip was successful!

(The wedding was at The Riviera a few miles away, and that place is CRAZY!!!)

Most times I went to the Roll n Roaster was during the work week at lunch time, and food was usually served hot.
