Night blooming cereus
-
Mon, 06/22/09 10:54 PM
ast fall when I moved to Florida I bought a little night blooming cereus (cactus) from a local nursery. It bloomed when I wasn't looking. Last week I noticed little buds on it. Tonight it is opening before my eyes. I have it beside my computer and can almost see the petals move. I'll try to take some pics and post them. Another little thing that makes me happy! I will try to share it with you.

When my parents were alive, we used to have one of them, and whenever it bloomed, my father would try to save the blossom to take to work the next day to show. I may be wrong, but of I remember correctly he was most successful in keeping it from closing before morning when he cut the blossom off right at the leaf and then put it in some water in the refrigerator. I also think that one year we had two blossoms either on the same night or on two successive nights (something quite rare).

such a beautiful, yet shortlived, bloom! if you don't get the pic just after it's opened, you'll be too late...
