Hello All,
I had my first home-grown tomato sandwich
of 2009, and it was GRREAT!
I am so grateful to have a garden.
It was a German tomato and had the right
amount of tart and juice to make my day.
Sometimes, a simple tomato sandwich can
bring heaven to earth.

A great tomato sandwich is hard to beat. A coworker brought some of the best homegrown tomatoes ever and we have been eating tomato sandwiches all week. Ya-hoo for the summer!

I'm suffocating in beefsteaks and cherry tomatoes right now, but I'm not complaining!  We've even give a bunch away. I bring two a day to work for an afternoon snack.  My BF wants to double the amount of plants next year.  We may have to open a tomato stand!

I am jealous, but happy for everyone  eating homegrown a tomato sandwich.  The weather here in Northern Illinois has been horrid...lots of rain and cool weather.  I have lots of buds and small green tomato "balls"...looks we might be eating these wonderful sandwiches about mid- Sept.

Hello All,
ChiTownDiner, I like sliced Italian Bread, lightly toasted,  spread some mayo,
and sprinkle the tomato with salt...sometimes pepper if I am
in the mood.

We have to wait a few more days. A couple of our Tomatoes are turning red, but the majority are still fading green. We love the Romas, and use them for sandwiches and salads as well as in the kitchen!

Fieldthistle,

I got my first tomato on Thursday as well. However, was not able to us it on a BLT as I usually do for the first of year. Some type of pest had gotten into one side, so I was only able to eat half of it in wedges - still delightful!

Do you know when the LISKEYS  will start selling CORN? ohuld be soon now.

Hello All,
I am saddened to announce that I shall be having
my last home-grown tomatoe sandwich in the next
few days.  Too, too early my tomato plants plants
have been dying.  I will have to buy fresh tomatoes
from roadside stands of my Mennonite friends.
There is nothing like a home-grown tomato.

@ Fieldhistle!

Which brand of (german) tomatoes did you use for the sandwich, I am just curious...?

Kind regards

Fieldthistle, do your tomato plants usually die this early or have they succumed to Late Blight? My tomato plants and the others in my neighborhood are all dying from it. I have, luckily, gotten quite a few tomatoes but the plants are dying from the bottom up. I hope that next year is better. I know that this blight started back in May so I guess I am lucky that it didn't hit my garden until a couple of weeks ago!

Hello All,
Agnesrob, mine died or are dying from bottom up.
I heartily agree with you about good hopes for next year.
Sorry, Stricken Detective, about no photos.
Michael Germany, my friend, the plants I planted were
German Pinks.

What kind of meat and condiment does one put on a tomato sandwich? I like bolonga, black pepper and mayo on Sara Lee 100% whole wheat.

CheeseburgerChet I only use plain white bread, Hellmans mayo, and salt.  Maybe a slice of cheddar once in a while.

I have been enjoying tomato sandwiches all summer. 1.) My friend's home grown, 2.) East Texas tomatoes & 3.) Heirlooms. CChet, the only "filling" in a tomato sandwich is tomatoes :) at least to me. I like wheat bread, mayo, salt pepper & every once in a great while a few snips of fresh dill. But the main thing is the wonderful summer sun kissed tomatoes themselves. The season will be over soon here. *sigh* It's one of the FEW things I enjoy about the killer Texass summers...

Bump.....
I like the Romas too, but as I have come to find out, there are many kinds. I've grown San Marizano (sp?).........it is wonderful but blights out for me. Pony Express, a modern hybrid is very dependable, but because it bears all at once (for machine harvest), you need to plant several times for succession harvest. It grows well from direct sown seed.  A favorite is Opalaka , it sounds like it is from Florida, but it is a long, dry fruit that looks Italian. It bears all season for me.

We've always had problems with critters eating our tomatoes, so this year we're trying the hanging plants, hanging them from the rail of our deck. They're high enough that the deer can't get them, and low enough that I can reach them. With some luck, we'll get home growns this year.

This is the first year that we planted the Black Krim tomato and I must say it has a truely unique flavor. We also planted some chocolate cherrys and something called a Black Sea man. All of which have uniqueness of their own.

This is 2012 and I had my second tomato sandwich today, the first yesterday and the tomatoes were vine ripened out of my garden.

Toasted bread, mayo, salt, pepper and three slices of a big boy that were thick.

The flavor IS great, but in my humid climate, the really dark tomatoes seem to blight out even worse than the other heirlooms. The old standby sprays do jack-diddly for me. If someone has reliably grown Black Krim in the northeast, I'd love to hear your secrets!!!!!

We didn't plant any tomatoes this year but the Ohio grown tomatoes have been excellent, as is the corn.  It seems really early for those two, but with the hot spring and so far hot summer.......I'm not complaining!
We have been eating tomato salads.....sliced tomatoes with chiffonade of basil, drizzled with olive oil, a little salt and pepper.  Delightful.
