Yonkers is becoming a place to go to,  instead of come from.

Central Park Ave in Yonkers has a new building going up that will house-----

----(Da-Da)-----------------Frank Pepe's Pizzeria -------

Right uppa the street from Uno 1 ---- New Haven vs Chicago.

Lotsa dough will be kneeded ------ but that's good for the business.
The economy of Yonkers issa lookin good.

According to their website , they're going to open sometime this fall. As we're going back for a visit in early Sept., I have a feeling that we're not going to be able to get a taste on this visit.

They probably will stay in the Northeast but we sure could use a pizza joint like this in SW Ohio!!!!!

I am going back in Sept also------as a matter of fact that is how I found out about Pepe moving into a high class neighborhood.

I asked Mary if we should take your advice about Xavier's place in Yonkers------it may be a budget buster though.

Maybe we will have a Jasper night at Frank Pepe's new joint.

My guess is a place that served tomato pies like Frank Pepe's wouldn't last a year in Ohio. Ohioans would think there was something wrong with them.

The clam pie was very good, but the idea of visiting a pizzeria as good as Pepe’s and walking away without trying tomato sauce would be unthinkable. The Original Tomato Pie with Mozzarella ($14.50) and sausage ($3.55 extra) was even more satisfying, with course cuts of sausage and exactly the right ratio of robust tomato sauce to cheese, which nearly hit the edge of the pie. This was my third trip to Pepe’s, and after my latest visit, it’s looking like August 2008 was an unfortunate hiccup. There’s little doubt that Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana belongs in the pizza Pantheon.

Ohioans just do not know what great pizza is supposed to be like I guess, except for those citizens who have settled there from the northeast and other parts of the country where great pizza is the rule and not the exception!

I have to both laugh and cry. When I used to go the Pepe's all the time a plain was 40-cents, and if you wanted it with mozzarella it was 60-cents. With mozzarell and sausage -- 80-cents.

I used to pay 35 cents for a big slice of regular cheese and tomato sauce pizza in my favorite Yonkers pizzeria on Kimball Ave back in the late 50s and early 60s.

Q: How much did a slice of pizza cost in 1975?

In: Food and Cooking, Humor and Amusement Corner [Edit categories]
[Edit]

A: A good and really large slice of pizza with the olive oil running down your arm would cost in Bronx NY 25 cents maybe 30 cents. and worth every penny, not like these so called pizzerias in Connecticut

---60 cent pizza was worth every cent.  But, I was only making $75 a week then and I'm not sure my wife and I could afford a whole pie.

But look at that picture-----no wonder your a pizza nut Mr Pizza Nut.
Frank Pepe is moving in a westerly direction ----could he make it to Ohio?
I doubt it----not if youse guys are telling the truth about Ohio.  Go where the NY (or New Haven) pizza is--------their  new motto is "Build it and they will come".

Hey! As a teenager in NY during the 50's, a slice almost anywhere was only .25!

We do have some pizza joints in the area that resemble NY pizza pies.

They come close enough so that one does not forget what pizza was meant to taste like.

And we can get baguettes from Toronto that remind us of great French and Italian bread we used to eat in Yonkers growing up.

And Panera Bread sells a damn good sourdough baguette.

Still looking though for a bakery that sells a NY Jewish rye bread that taste likes home.

Marx Bagels in Blue Ash makes it too but the dough is nothing like I remember it to be in NY - crusty and very chewy with caraway seeds and smells like heaven.

A story today from local media:
http://www.lohud.com/article/2009907250368

Note to Frank Pepe's: Do you know where Yonkers gets their water from? The New York City public water supply. Yaaay! No need to import from New Haven.

November 2nd----Ma-rone-----it is cold weather time in Yonkers in November ---I'll bet it goes down below 75 some nights----soooooo in November Brother Cavandre and I shall be back in the Sunshine State.   Ah yes, but I shall be in New Haven at Frank Pepe's original hang out in August--------which is only a few days away.

All-a-so just so I don't forget what good pizza is all about Mary and i will visit the Colonly Inn in Stamford during September.

I think the good Jewish Rye Bread, and NY Style Hard Rolls baking people should have fleets of jets dropping off care packages throughout the country.  Like when Frankie yusta have Eye-trall-ion bread sent from Hoboken to Palm Springs every week.  There are somethings in life ya gotta have.

The Jewish Rye travels OK, but not the Hard Roll. By 3pm of the day it's baked, it's already a ghost of what it was earlier in the day & then goes downhill rapidly.

Whoops, you are right. I forgot that the old Ricky's was that far north along Central Avenue. Per the City of Yonkers water quality report, that area is served by the Westchester County Water District:

I have a crew on the scene and will report all the big doing's in Yonkers.
If, by chance, I go back to the wintery north before next summer I shall
stop by and buy a few to go---one to you and one to Michael Hoffman
and one to that Pizza Nut  Keep-a hugh high hopen for the hugh-P-S truck.

Today's (11-14-2009) restaurant review is for the Frank Pepe's in Yonkers:
http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Review/6842-7329/frank-pepe-pizzeria-napoletana

As they expand, I wonder if they are going to "tweak" the recipe a little bit to appeal to local tastes.

I find when you have to ask for a well done pizza pie to get the crust the way you like it, it is generally a losing proposition.

I agree with all three posts above.  I worry that they might tweak the recipe for local tastes, but I wouldn't yet say that is happening in Yonkers.  And, while we mentioned in the review asking for a well-done pie as a possibility, we have to note that the pies we received were beautifully singed - any more time in the oven and they may well have been too burned.  And, finally, we have NEVER asked for a well-done pie at a Pepe's.  Never had to.  Hopefully, they're still working out the kinks in Yonkers.

I can't believe tastes have changed in Yonkers - their pies were always like NYC pies - or the pizzeria didn't get thru its first year.

I have not lived in Yonkers since 1970 or so but the pizza anywhere in Westchester County used to be as good as any in NYC.

I know from visiting my sister a while back in Hopewell Junction in Dutchess County that the times they are a changing concerning pizzas in NY - the ones we got from the local pizzeria had lousy crusts - it was like buying one in Cincinnati if you didn't know where to go.

That's sad. But, I guess it would be silly to expect a pie from New York to come very close to the wonder of a New Haven apizza.

Well, it is certainly good to know that the people of Yonkers will finally, after this pizzeria gets a chance to work out the opening-week kinks Bruce and Sue mentioned, have a chance to experience what truly good actually pizza is; and thereafter will have a reasonably good benchmark to compare good pizza to, wherever their life may take them, throughout the remainder of their lives.

Obviously it up too individual tastes but Catania's has the BEST calzones and salad pizza !   I like Pepe's pizza overall !
