Vanilli's Greek-Italian 1302 North Gloster Street great food full menu and bar I haven't tried their pizza yet but they are considered the best in Tupelo. Everytime I've been there it was for family dinners.

My advice would be to maybe eat lumch in Topelo and then take drives somewhere like Oxford for dinner. In Tupelo, I find Vanillis to be ok, and I have heard that there is a good taco and burrito shop behind the Speedy Gonzales E-Z- Stop) at 1725 North Gloster Street. It serves tacos, burritos and quesadillas. Some days they have tamales as well. The tacos come loaded with fresh onions and cilantro with limes and red and green salsa on the side. The phone number (of the convenience store connected to the window) is 662-620-2821. Havent been there but it sounds promising. In Oxford there are many choices.

Romie's Grocery on W. Jackson at N. Gloster. Plate lunches at lunch and a bit more upscale at supper. Harvey's on S. Gloster at Varsity. Ruth's on Main St. in Verona. Weekday lunch only buffet... $8.00 even. Very good. Be sure to stop by the Dutch Pastry Shop (Mennonite actually) for some lemon squares, cookies, or breads. On S. Gloster just south of Main (across from Atlanta Bread Co.).

now this is actually in Corinth MS (just north of Tupelo) but I cannot believe Abe's hasnt been mentioned & Abe's isnt on the Roadfood list! I'll have to get some pics & put it up myself. This is an awesome lunch counter. You walk in the door & Abe greets you while he's standing over the flatop cooking up burgers & steak sandwichs. Also a pretty good grilled balogna sandwich although in my opinion, its too thin. You've basically got a counter with about 12 seats & thats it. Abe & his wife are the only ones there. they're got an awesome breakfast & lunch. Burgers are incredible & they also do a steak sandwich thats to die for. There perfectly brewed sweet ice tea is served in frozen mason jars (the perfect medium for this traditional southern drink!). Abe yells over everyones head and asks you what you want, you yell it out & he throws it on the grill. one of the few short order cooks left. Its on Hwy 72 just east hwy 45 on the south side of the street. Its one of those places thats covered in junk (liscense plates, pictures, anything people have brought them from around the country of that they've found in their travels) You better call beforehand to make sure they're open (they usually close for about 10 days around July 4th for their summer vacation). If you're in Tupelo you better make a trip up to Abes. Its one of the bests. Also in Tupelo for dinner try out Romies Grocery. The Catfish with Romies sauce is awesome. Theres also a couple of great bars right off the Tupelo square. Dont remember their names but one is a big place with a bit of a cajun style to them. Good poboys. Great big bar. Stage & they've even got an upstairs dance club. Then theres another small bar right off the square in an alley. Little place with a good bar atmosphere & good chicken tenders. Something else in Corinth to check out is Dilworth's Tamales. Not your typical Tamale (even in Mississippi Delta terms) This Tamale is almost cigarette shaped. Long & Skinny with no meat. Its made with cornmeal & lard & boiled in a hot bath. Very tasty as a snack & dirt cheap. You can pick up a dozen for a couple of bucks. Makes a wonderful cold snack while out on a boat! And what Corinth is known for is of course Slug Burgers (Slug Burger Capital). Slug burgers are not in fact made out of slugs (Yuck!) but are a blend of beef & soybean. They call them slug burgers because they used to cost a nickel (or a slug as nickels where known back then) Theres even a slugburger festival in Corinth. There is a few slug burger cafes around town. So if you have some time when you're in Tupelo, make the drive up to Corinth. I never realized the potential until I was driving threw last month on my way to Pickwick lake for the weekend & a friend stopped off at Abes & then we grabbed some Tamales for the boat. I've been through Corinth dozens of times but never stopped to eat. Wish I had stopped a long time ago!

You MUST do yourself a favor and head out to Oxford and get catfish at the Taylor Grocery. You will NOT be disappointed!

If I Get To Oxford............
-
Thu, 05/13/10 12:33 PM
I won't be able to go to Taylor Grocery for all the other fine dining spots such as City Grocery, Waltz, 208, Ajax, Lenora's. Big Bad Breakfast, Snack Shop, Downtown Grill, Handy Andy's, Yocona River Inn and Taylor Grocery. Oxford is a food lover's paradise. Good luck.
