Any suggestions for lunch spots? Drive-thrus or take-out counters are preferred but not required.

LONG aqgo--i was always amazed at Little America Wyoming---the ONLY thing out there in the middle of nowhere--exit 68 on 80 in Wyoming----gas food lodging---they got it---and they use to have very good fried chicken and breakfast 24 hrs a day---like i say--they were good 20 yrs ago and they are still there---of course there aint much compition out there!---they have several other places now but this is the original---comes coplete with a classic story of the original founder---and the hotel allows pets in certain rooms----got stuck there in a blizzard once--the rooms were good and they let us all have free coffee and food if you ran out funds---had to wait from about noon overnight till the next afternoon when the roads were cleared.

I've had very tasty green chile in both Rock Springs and Rawlins, but I'd be hard pressed to tell you the names now. Neither town is very big though, so just take the time to drive the Main street of each and there will be good things. :)

This is a brutal, 20 hr drive so I wish you well. When I've made this drive I would leave Salt Lake City about midnight and had a sit down breakfast @ Little America in Cheyenne, WY. Then it was 10 hours to Iowa City where I would stop for a breaded pork tenderloin @ dinnertime. You will be in Chicago in time for Letterman.

Same schedule, leave Chicago about midnight and stop for a sit down breakfast at The Machine Shed, just west of Des Moines, Iowa. And again I would use Little America in Cheyenne as my other sit down meal. Good Luck

Funny, I didn't say that but I am actually going from Chicago. I'm just taking two days to do it and have found lots of good stops between Chicago and Cheyenne. It is the Wyoming-Utah wasteland that worried me (lots of natural beauty, not so much good food). Thanks for the recommendations -- I will definitely stop at Little America but it looks like I will have to do some exploring elsewhere.

When I've gone back to KC from Southern Oregon along I80, it has taken me 3 days, so good luck on going 500 miles further in one less day.
