Annoying FF Commericals - Thu, 08/6/09 11:08 AM
While reading the "We are getting a SONIC" thread...a poster mentions not liking SONIC because of the 2 guys in the car in the ad's. (They also want "someone from the back seat to reach over and knock those 2 out"...thats me paraphrasing :) reading that post got me thinking...

Thinking about the commericals for a certain pizza chain advertising their "Great American Pizza's"...how the LOUD MOUTH managers are YELLING and SCREAMING about "putting some South in your mouth" and "bring it on Meathead"...I'm talking about those ANNOYING Domino's commericals...the first such ad's that has EVER made me not patronize a business, just because of the spots.

T o be fair, I havent seen these ad's in about 3 weeks, and if I continue to NOT see them, I will probably go back to eating at Domino's. Those GA Pizza's are actually pretty good...I realize my one small protest will not affect Domino's 3rd quarter profits in any way, but it's the pricepal of the thing.

Any commericals out there make YOU not want to eat at their establishments? Food speaking of course...

and BTW, Im in Louisville, Ky now...moved here in March from Traverse City, Mi...so "Hi" Mayor Al and others in the area!

I find every commercial by a fast food chain extremely offensive and crude and obscene virtually.

The commercials of all fast food chains irritate me, but especially those of KFC and Arby's, as they are, IMO, the two FF chains that have fallen the furthest quality-wise in the past twenty years.

I think most fast food chains have gone down hill over the past decade or two.

I think they got fat and lazy and their franchisees have been living the good life.

I think it is time the fast food boys starting scratching for their livings like most of the rest of humanity.

Of course if the fat and lazy consumers keep shoving their money at them nothing is going to change in the next year or decade even.

They ran most of the independent restaurants out of business and we have a landscape dotted with ridiculously identical places to eat all over our country and the world at large.

You really need to discipline yourself and your family not to patronize these businesses.  It probably will never happen.

Craig,
Welcome to Louisville! I hope your area survived the deluge this week! We are located between Lanesville and Elizabeth Indiana only about 2 miles at most from the Casino Riverboat on the Ohio River. Luckily most of those two miles are "up the hill" so flooding is not an issue for us!

Next time we get a RF visitor passing thru we'll try to let you know in time to be able to plan to join us for a meal somewhere in the area.

Now I have to make a comment about the 'NaySayers' relative to the FF Industry. Remember folks what brought these businesses to the forefront of the road-food arena... For many years prior to the 1950's lots of travelers took "PotLuck" and at times, considerable risk with every meal stop they made as they traveled across the country. The first "Chains", I think of HoJo's and even McDonalds, were designed to reduce the risk of bad choices at mealtime. People started to travel more and wanted consistency when they stopped to eat. HOJO's was a prime example. You knew...and still know..if you stopped at the 'red roof' what you would be served, what it would cost, and that certain standards would be met. That was a BIG plus to the newly mobile American.
Since then the weight has shifted in the decision making process. The collective quality of the chain/FF business has dropped to the point where some folks are looking for better quality at non-chain/ff restaurants. Not all people agree with the RF concept though. Many Americans choose to visit the Chain place for their "favorite" dish rather than chance a visit to a "strange" or unknown place.  It's called Freedom of Choice, and I for one, respect it as one of our basic freedoms!  I love finding and enjoying true RF places. However I also appreciate being able to run thru a drive-thru to pick up a Butter Burger, or ten JIB tacos, at a FF stop next to the Interstate when I am trying to log in a bunch of miles on a roadtrip.
It Ain't All or Nothing with Me.!!

Funny but I generally going out of my way not to patronize fast food chain locations - no matter where I am.

I make an exception for White Castle though but even they are pretty incompetent in getting simple orders correct.

I thought this was about the ads, not the food?

I was the one that posted about the Sonic guys & they do drive me crazy.

McD's has one with a guy with an Issac Hayes type voice that makes you think that they're the second coming of Starbucks. This makes no sense to me since they get your coffee to you in about 1/10 the time it takes at that other place.

Jimmy Johns, particularly that one where the logo falls screaming for-freaking-EVER.  Makes me want to kick the TV.  I used to get their sandwiches a lot (they deliver for free and can find the backstage door), but I haven't gotten anything for years because of that commercial.  The rest of theirs are just stupid, but that one annoys the heck out of me.

I dislike the TV commercials of MD and BK, who are seldom on german TV channels.

Everythings looks fresh and tasty, and what do you get for your hard earned money, lukewarm Scheissendreck (Junk). And a soft drink with 75% ice, instead of Coke or Sprite.

No, thanks, I did not touch this **** for years, and I am happy with it.

Kind german regards

Michael

The Culver's ads with the guy hiding near the drive-thru yelling at people and then stealing food are really stupid as well.  But they don't prevent me from eating there, as I have never been to one (don't tell my niece's husband...he manages a Culver's).

There are only 3 Culver's stores within 100+ miles of us. I guess that's why we don't see their commercials! They do have a concession stand at the Louisville Bats Stadium. I hear they do a brisk business with their Frozen Custard during the summer evening games!

The commercials of MD and BK are very declining here on the german TV channels. They now concentrate on the special TV channels for the children over here...

What's always annoyed me about Fast Food Franchise TV ads in general is the discrepancy between the experience depicted in the ad and the experience upon actually going there.

From the smiling counter help in the ads, to the looks of the customers in the ads to the looks of the food being served, it just does not match the reality. Ever.

Re:Annoying FF Commericals - Thu, 08/6/09 8:56 PM
First...thanks for the warm welcome Mayor Al...im actually pretty close to you...if there was a bridge on this side of Town...Im in Valley Station (yay Mike Linnings) and could probably be at your house in 5 minutes if the "east end" bridge was going to be the "west end" bridge...we were spared with the flooding..just rained here kinda hard...nothing terrible..good thing, though, my apartment is a basement level...so i would be STILL underwater now if we got hit hard...

I agree we dont see too many of the Culvers ad's...although i do loves me some Creamy Vanilla FC quite a bit...yum!

And I also agree...i would have NEVER posted this thread ANYWHERE but in the FF section...i cant even begin to think any actual RF place would have a bad ad...but this is America...and choice is out there..sometimes some DC Slyders and a sack of fries hits the spot...and if thats what I want to do, no one can stop me. Not all FF is bad...quite the contrary...believe it or not...some RF isnt the greatest, even though the spirit it stands for is admirable.

and Ken, i agree as well...its been a long time since a smiling, attractive counter girl asked me if I wanted fries with that combo meal...2 nights ago at our local MCD'S...i waited inside at the counter for 15 MINUTES to order, gave up, went thru the Drive in, and as i pulled up to get my order, the lady who was IN LINE IN FRONT OF ME INSIDE still haden gotten her's...and this was a 7:30 at night...the fantasy of the workers in FF ad's and the reality of what you get at your local place are hundred's of miles apart...but thats the fault of the franchisee's, and the company that gives those franchises out. The food was still decent...

Thanks again!

That Jack In The Box "menopause" commercial is one of the most tacky and inappropriate things that I've seen in a long time. Someone in JITB management needs to be shown the door.

Mr. Voss--------------thanks so much for posting JITB site with their commercials--------------ran thru all of them and with the exception of the "babies w/ tacos" they are generally hilarious-----some of the best of their genre (have worked in commercial biz on camera and VO for 20 + years) did a number of FF ads but nowhere near this kind of creativity------though as far as I know there are no JITB's in my area if there were the ads would motivate me to make that first foray with no problem and then let them stand or fall on quality of food etc.. Just a sidebar ----the Sonic ads from a while back with the husband and wife team were just as good and innovative as the JITB ------------once they changed to current "wimp" campaign you would be hard pressed to get me to go to one-----if like JITB there was one near me.

Because I've never heard of Wick's, which means no matter how fabulous it might be, I can't get it whenever I might want it.

Felix...I think he was talking to me...I have a Wicks about 2 miles from my house...and I agree...its far superior to Dominos, Sometimes the "D" just sounds good...but I know where hes coming from...

to add a another commerical to my pet peeve list..its not for A fast food, but it IS a food nonetheless...its for the annoying Miracle Whip ad's...that they are "not going to tone it down"...are you kidding? Its freakin' MIRACLE WHIP...a bland salad dressing...come on...its a good thing I really dont use it to begin with....but If I did, I wouldnt now...

Niagara, you're not really missing anything by being far from a Whataburger. Back in the '80s, when my job occasionally took me to Houston, I ate at Whataburger a few times and enjoyed it; the burgers were flame-broiled like Burger King's, only better. Things, unfortunately, have changed. While driving home from the NOLA Roadfood Festival in April, I had dinner at a Whataburger in Biloxi MS, only to discover that the chain had switched over to frying their burgers on a standard McDonald's-type grill. I'm sorry to say that my burger ( the signature Whataburger ) was no better than what you would get at the Golden Arches. This is the same idiotic stunt that Hardee's pulled in the early '80s, and their burger sales have never been the same since.

The only time my family and I eat at a fast food place is when we are in a crunch for time. That doesn't happen very often as my wife is a stay at home mom and I work 60 hours per week. Fast food in general is expensive for the amount of food you receive. I can make the same meal at home for about half the cost.

Now, onto the topic at hand. I think that most FF ads are in poor taste. The ones I don't like are the D.Q. ads and the Quizno's ads. Very stupid. Personally, I am not swayed one way or the other by ads that I see on T.V. Either I like the place or not. No amount of marketing is going to change my mind about that!!!

I'll hit up a fast food chain once in a great while - sometimes I just want some cheap, familiar something - I'll even do Taco Bell once every few years or so...
...but come on, you guys, just quit advertising some special item or other as searingly, dangerously spicy hot. You've never sold anything that has more than trace amounts of heat to it! I'm no macho eat-this-on-a-dare type, but when I want hot I want hot, and that just insults you and me both.

Just saw my other least favourite ad campaign, and yes it does prevent me from eating there.  Subway's "make it your own" five dollar footlong commercials where they "feature" people singing VERY poorly.  The song is annoying enough in and of itself, but being forced to listen to ungodly numbers of renditions of it off-key and out-of-tune, along with the really crappy "acting" job most of the people in the commercials do, is enough to put me off Subway for years.

Seems to be a trend developing here----bet you dimes to dollars the advertisers are taking a cue from Reality TV-----bring in a bunch of non-union basically local wannabe's get them to sign a release for a BUCK----throw them in an audition room with a logo backdrop---a casting director and some "13 year old advertising types" put them thru their paces for one or two days----edit in the best of the worst----------and for pennies in cable money they have a spot that they can run 24/7----even hit a few selected class A slots. You can take it from there and guess who the target audience is.

BK ad "but I've got these tiny hands"
I just want to smash the tv

There ya go-----the 13 year olds rule on "Madison Ave" bring back the Mad Men and all their glory from the golden age of adverts. Some small houses can still do it but mass marketing has become mass murder of all sensibilities.

It seems that fully half of the fast food/junk food commercials have voice-overs by Billy West, most notable as the voice for cartoon characters Stimpy the cat and Fry from 'Futurama'...they give me a good laugh, but I'm not comfortable with them informing my dietary habits.

The most annoying, currently, is that STUPID Stuffed Pan Crust one. The idea of it is nausiating enough, but add that screeching, stoner-esque "JACKPOT!!!" and I want to T.P. my nearest Pizza Hut.

Sadly, they're all annoying - some are just more so than others.

Does Bud Light count as FF? Their "tail gate approved" commercials are as annoying as those infomercials they want to spoof!

TGI Friday's has a new, disgusting, turn me off from eating at your place ever commercial.

Three guys eating with barbecue sauce all over their face.

Very appetizing.

You got to love those Burger King commercials with the Burger King dude, that dude cracks me up, exspecially the one where he wakes people up in the middle of a dream. CLASSIC Madison Avenue genius at work in these ads.

Speaking of BK commercials, I really want a set of "Estrada" glasses...
