Amazing Homemade Dogs in Orange County, N.Y

Recently a local regional magazine published an article about this place here in Orange County that makes homemade dogs:



Part butcher shop, part convenience store, the Quaker Creek does ALL of its meat making on site. You KNOW you are in Meat Heaven , when you get a look at the display case:








The counter guy even a case or two for me to see up close and personal:






The 'regular' frankfurters are lovely 8 to the pound natural casing (naturally) beauties. I ended up buying a pound of the regular dogs, and a couple of the weisswurst to take home for my tests...here is what they look like on the grill:



The weisswurst literally melts in your mouth, and the franks have a great snap, and a slightly SWEET taste to them. Both are some of the best sausages and dogs I have EVER have..and you canbet I am going back and back and back....

The Quaker Creek is on the Pine Island Turnpike in the heart of the Orange County Black Dirt region. They do have a couple of long tables where I THINK you can eat the dogs cooke to eat there - I literally was drooling so much, and wanting to get my dogs home....I forgot to ask!!

I'll bet that last puppy dressed up well in the bun.

Fortunately I have 3 places in my town that make their own dogs. Used to be 4 until recently. I've also been to many nearby butcher shops and pork stores. I have yet to find one that doesn't make really good hot dogs and sausages. You won't get any fresher.

Nice writeup Lou, sounds like a neat place. As John says, almost every butcher shop and pork store that makes thier own wursts does a good job of it.

I love that Pine Island Turnpike route thru the "Black Dirt Country". My wife & I took a day trip there a few years ago. Wish I had known about the Quaker Creek Store then. We probably passed it without even knowing it. 

 We bought some locally grown onions and ate at the Jolly Onion Inn, where a lot of the dishes feature onions. I'd link to it but the link seems to be dead.

Just an update that this place was featured on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" on the Travel Channel the other day. It's part of an episode on the Hudson River Valley.

I'm not sure if it's available on line but my local cable system has it as an On Demand option.

NO!!!!  The best French Onion soup I ever had in my life was at Ye Olde Jolly Onion.  Too bad.
