I love Slim Jims...and I'm not afraid to admit it I could eat a whole box of the "Super Slim" size, if my wife weren't there to stop me! Anyone else care to admit such fondness for these mystery meat-type sausage simulations???

I'm not "in love" with 'em, but I've been known to buy them once in awhile. They actually make pretty good "driving food", just like beef jerky.

I don't think I could eat a "whole box of Super Slims", but I sure like one every now and then.

Its the way the grease oozes out of the meat like substance, That makes it for me.

Pardon the duh factor, but what exactly is a Slim Jim? I've seen them in the 7-11 but never had one. However, a high grease quotient is always a plus to me.

Not very ladylike, perhaps, but I gotta be me!

They're a lot like a very thin salami. The taste is concentrated beef salami. There's a thin skin-like layer that gives it a nice snap followed by moist meat. It has a great "mouth-feel".

WalMart sells a 'Pepperoni Stick' about an inch and a half in diameter and 14 inches long, that has been my emergency ration for years. Hack off about a 6 inch cut of the stick, wrap in something clean,or at least someting to prevent grease stains on shirt pocket, consume when needed. The whole stick is just $3.00

I don't know if it's necessarily the "Slim Jim" brand or some of the other "7-11 Counter Top Mystery Meat Sticks", but I DO know that when "beef lips and mecahnically separated chicken" are listed as the 1st 2 ingredients.....well, THESE lips ain't touching 'em!!

As I was standing in the endless check-out line at Wal-Mart the other day, I picked up a slim-jim ( this was after I read about the crisis in the White House over an impending alien invasion) and read the ingredients. When I got to the part about "mechanically seperated chicken parts" I put it back.

When will I learn to never read the ingredients?

Aack!

A stratospheric sodium "meat" product complete with lips, snout, and colon- and a bit of viscous pig bladder plasma that oozes out when you bite into it. It might be the nastiest stuff on earth.

Except when you're at 7-11 at 4:00 in the morning and you're all liquored up. Then again, in college, we'd make nachos with Cheese Whiz and Ragu.

You all are expecting them to be made of Pork Tenderloin, Sirloin Steak, Chicken Breast and organic casing??? Get real. When I picked up a good looking Ribeye steak at the supermarket yesterday, and saw 12% added solution in small print under the weight...I wondered what the solution was?? Not that I am opposed to eating 'Solution' or even 'Absolution', but it pisses me off that 12% percent of my steak wasn't part of the cow when he/she gave it's all for my dinner.
Enjoy the Slim Jim one of the 4 basic food groups.

Mr. Mayor, I absolutely HATE the meats that are now injected with "solution"!!! About a year ago I purchased some pork chops from local grocery store, cooked them, we ate them for supper and I kept wondering "why do these taste like ham and have the consistency of ham??" Then I read the lable. You gotta be kidding. Injecting pork, chicken breasts and I never saw a ribeye injected but if you did, they're doing it! Why?
I have no problem with jerky, pepperoni, slim jims and the rest.......but don't go adding stuff to the fresh meat!!!!!!

llee,
According to the Manager of the Meat dept. it is no different than shooting the Turkeys full of salt-water to "flavor the bird". He claims it is a tenderizer/season salt solution. WELL...Turkey at $.79 a lb gains quite a bit of profit for the company if you add 15% solution...and some this holiday have gone as high as 18%.
Take a $7.00 a lb. ribeye and add 12% weight in water... Just another way to rip off the public .

While hardly close to being a vegetarian, for me, the whole business of "solutions" (7%) and such is getting out of hand. If I buy a rib eye, I want all rib eye. One of the larger milk conglomerates was trying to sue a nearby Vermont dairy because the latter had organic on the label, thereby "implying that milk that wasn't organic was not as good for you." Just like the Roadfood joints we visit, the small-time farmers and butchers need our support. I would rather spend more at a local cooperative for chicken than pay Frank (Ed Koch) Perdue. At least Slim Jims do not claim to be anything but what they are.

Here is a pretty interesting site about what the mega-companies do to our food: http://www.themeatrix.com/

Grampy, that site is hilarious, especially the pig named Leo....where'd they come up with that? I can understand that the animals have to be mass produced, it would be nice if they weren't but they are. But the whole thing about injecting liquids into fresh meat just pi**es me off! I will not buy a turkey that is injected with broth or anything else.
For years the seafood industry has been treating scallops with phosphates, primarily sodium trypolyphosphate (STP)....sounds like something you should be putting in your car engine instead of your food! So if you start with 500 pounds of scallops and soak them overnight in a solution of water and STP, you end up with 750 pounds of scallops!!!! We're paying for WATER! At how much a pound? And so far, it's all perfectly legal. Most people would be shocked to know how chemically altered our food is.
OK, off the soap box now, we can get back to the Slim Jim conversation.

Reading all these posts got me to thinking about my days as an undergrad at Cornell (soooo long ago!) Mention has been made of the Cornell Dairy Bar, still quite the place. (I worked there for about 3 1/2 yrs, but I digress). While I was there, the Animal Science Dept ran a butcher shop and store. In addition to the traditional meat market-type products sold, they also produced and sold "Slim Georges". They were somewhat similar to a Slim-Jim, but much tastier. Am I the only person on this thread that remembers them?

I can't speak for Meowzart, but I have felt the changes in the boards as they evolve...
I am guilty of knocking a few (6, I think) posts off the boards since assuming office. It was easy to see those were hard-core attacks on individuals or blatant bad stuff In a couple of cases they were added by an individual who logged on simply to say something rotten...and then disappeared. 2 were banned by Stephan after we deleted their crap.
I must say in defense of the common goal...that we have noticed a sliding of the threads towards the 'Personal comments , as opposed to the 'stick to the topic' format that seemed to be evident during the summer months. I am not sure if that has caused some of the folks who were present in June (or so) to fade out , or not. I do admit that I have added more than my share of NON-Roadfood related comments to the boards....maybe that is to be expected as we 'get to know each other'?? Anyway, As far as I am concerned, I would urge all to bend a bit more to the subjects at hand, and do a bit less of the double meanings that don't have any tie to the topic... B T W --My sheep photo was directly tied to the Curried Lamb Balls,(pun intended) if you look closely !!

Three words I can't stand on these forums: Fast, Food, and Nation!

But yes, this "loose thread" became suggestive, but nobody complained, so I saw no reason to edit or delete posts. Seemed all in good fun to me. Now if somebody got offended by all these mentions of girth or a flare-up occurred, then I would use my judgement or have an email confab with the Mayor. I think the topics de-evolve after a time as most conversations do. But sometimes they become more chatty or become conversations between two-three people. Sometimes I think these off-topic chats could be better handled in email, but again, since nothing nasty or mean-spirited comes of them, I leave them. It is the ones posted by people that love to tell us how badly we are eating or treating our bodies or animals that get me. They are posted for no other reason except for a rile-up and that is when the moderator power comes in handy. I think I've done it three times since the Mayor and I started as moderators.

Back to the topic of Slim Jims.

As a kid, I knew they were not healthy, but they tasted good although more than a little greasy, and I enjoyed one on occasion. As an adult, one look at the ingredient list and fatty contents is enough to make me never eat one again. If I want to blow my saturated fat intake, I'll do it with good quality pepperoni or Genoa salami in a sub sandwich. Someone else can have the animal lips, and processed parts.
