Route 6, The Grand Highway of the Republic - From Scranton to Smithport PA Thu, 08/27/09 4:11 PM (permalink)
Seems I'll be in Buffalo mid September.  Supposed to be some good eating going on.

This gives me the opportunity to do something I have been wanting to do for a long time - turn left at Scranton PA and take Route 6, the Grand Highway of the Republic, as far as Smithport.  Then turn right for Buffalo.

So what is good to eat along the way?  Looking for all manner of road food.  Partial to breakfasts, hot dogs, burgers, fresh cut french fries and any regional idiosyncrasies I might happen upon.

Thanks.

Haven't been there in a couple years but Wellsboro was a step back in time.  Pioneer ice cream/burgers, Wellsboro Diner, Penn Wells Hotel, Native Bagel, the candy shop- all worth a stop.  The diner isn't as good as when Bill and Dorotha had it but might have improved since my last visit.  The Saturday buffet at the Penn Wells always draws a crowd for the last couple decades.  Have a drink in the lounge or sit in the lobby and watch folks come and go.

Holly - I think you'll love Tony's.  It's worth it.  Just remember they close early (2pm Mon-Fri and 1pm Saturday).

Also, worthwhile are The Glider Diner (Scranton) and you've got to try Old Forge Pizza (Ghigiarelli's in Old Forge is my favorite) and then Pizza Perfect in Trucksville (about 10 minutes from Tony's).  Pizza Perfect is an even better (IMHO) verzion of
Pizza L'oven - which I know you like.

I'm up for a meet up - if you have the time.

(I'm a fan of YOUR website too - I have a good friend in Philly and we hit it up for rec's all the time).

Route 6 Diner in Smethport and Fezz's Diner in Coudersport. Have not eaten at Fezz's and been 10-11 years since I've eaten at Route 6 (then called Smethport Diner).  Route 6 Diner has the Hubberburger. Never had one as I've only had breakfast there.

Sara's in Presque Isle was featured on PBS' "Eat Pennsylvania Special" and it looked pretty great.   Sad to say, the westernmost point I've driven on Route 6 in Mansfield - but I can wholeheartedly recommend Twigs in Tunkhannock.

              Thanks all,

I've added Tony's and the other Scranton and Wilkes-Barre area places to my list for the next time I get to Wilkes-Barre.  I'm there a couple of times a year on business.  Figure this trip I'm going non-stop until I get on Route 6.  Looks like there is some good eating from there on.

Also open to any eating between Smithport and Buffalo.

You must have heard of Buffalo's Beef on Weck Sandwich. Two places outside of Buffalo and on your way are The Old Libary in Bradford, Pa and the Beef and Barrel in Olean, NY.

Beautiful towns like Tunkhannock all along the way.  Have a great trip.

Man, there are some great stops along 6 in PA; I'll have to dig in my archives. I recall a place where you can get home made condiments that were really good, up Towanda/Wyalusing/Meshoppen way. Good stuff in Tunkhannock, too.

I have always loved driving U S 6, but especially out West ! Before the interstate network was built, US 6 started (on the western end) at the Port of San Pedro/Long Beach CA and ran north following what is now thw 14 freeway route thru the Antelope Valley. Now the highway ends at its junction with US 395 near Bishop,CA. The opening stretch from Bishop on the Eastern Sierra Slope to Tonopah, NV (H S mascot-"The Muckers") has an empty beauty not found anywhere else that I know of. Those mountain/desert slopes are the home of the ancient Bristlecone Pines !  Not PA historic, but a whole different world of beauty thats for sure.

Then check it out in the Price Utah area for "Painted Desert" barrenlands.  Then again, if you want to go around the Eisenhower Tunnel (I-70) in Colorado, get off the freeway onto US 6 and climb over Loveland Pass, 11,990 ft on a wonderful ride over the top of the Rockies.

                      Yes U S 6 is a great ride !!

As someone who grew up near Olean, I'll second the Beef & Barrel.  For all of us who grew up there, it's a must stop anytime we go "home".

If you're going through Olean, take a slight detour to Cuba NY to the Cuba Cheese Shoppe for some good cheese.

I have played in softball tournaments in Smethport and have had several really good breakfasts at the Smethport Diner.  Have not been there since they changed their name.
