Man, that pie from the VFD was so good...

I chose the apple pie, because when I asked whether the apples were local, the firemen got into a discussion of particular men who were likely to have picked them. The crust was so flaky and the filling was so full of apple and cinnamon flavors. I have made good pies in the past, but that's the sort of pie I aspire to make.

I sort of regret that we allowed leftovers of the pies--a little voice tells me that maybe I could have sampled the berry, or perhaps the pecan. But after all the fine things we'd eaten before the pie, I could only gaze upon them wistfully, and I think that most of us felt the same way.

I was standing under the pavillion when the pies were delivered.  They were carried over by 2 Amish women...I knew then to get in early on the pies!  I personally sampled the apple, apple crumb, pumpkin, pecan and berry and decided the apple crumb was award winning..absolutely declicious!  not that the others were chopped liver either!

Great stuff, Buffetbuster.  I went to the University of Buffalo (officially State University of New York at Buffalo, but known as UB) for a couple of years.  Had plenty of "hot wings" and "beef on 'weck", but never discovered the specialty of charcoal-grilled hot dogs.  It was great to get a nostalgic culinary return by proxy.

Thanks for the great pics - we had such a fabulous time, and enjoyed a few new places along with those we tried on our last trip.  We stopped on our way home today to CT at a place suggested by the local Rochester rep at Heid's in Liverpool, NY - what a worthwhile stop for a red hot, and a white dog....and some great half-sour pickles! Looking forward to the next get-together.

I think I speak for more that just a few others when I say....
...that these pictures look nothing like wanderingjew.

            First of all, I'm back.

Second of all great photos and commentary Buffetbuster

            Third of all.....

I think we've already made it very clear that it's only the photos that Travelin Man takes on his camera that look absolutely NOTHING  like me-

I enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new ones. and now I've got to get back to reality and start loosing some weight!

              JRPfeff-
I thought you would enjoy the photo of Jane Stern with one of the bracelets you made up.  And no, I was way too busy taking photos to actually eat!

Cliff - I did like seeing Jane and others with the bracelets.  I couldn't be there physically, but I hope I was with you all in spirit.  I hadn't followed the Rushmore Tours before, and your report on just the first day of this event makes me want to be first in line next time.

Is nocarolina (A) making faces at the camera, (B) masterfully telling a story, (C) blowing up from too much food, or (D) all of the above?

PP and I stayed an extra day we were having such a good time. Even Miss Picky herself found some things she liked. The pork at Dinosaur, the steak and especially the hard rolls at LDR. We even brought home a dz hard rolls. The owner refused to let me pay for them. This after he bought everyone on the tour their food and drinks.

Friday night we ate at McPartlands with the rest of the RF management team. PP and I really liked the clam strips. The clam chowder was freshly made and really good!

I ate at Ted's hot dogs 3 times!

                      TTM-
Come on the Roadfood bus tour next year and I'm sure we'll find plenty of opportunities for more tacky tourist photos!

                      CTD-
Why aren't I surprised that you were in the right place when the pies showed up!  I'm still kicking myself for not taking a slice of the apple pie.

                      JRPfeff-
I'm going to write more about it when I'm done, but this was clearly the best Roadfood bus tour yet.  If possible, I highly recommend going on one.  They just keep getting better and better!

The bus took off from the airport Hilton at 10:30AM, with Beef on Weck legend Schwabl's

as our first destination.   They aren't normally open this early, but they did for us.  In fact, they even hired a couple of extra carvers!

As we walked in, we were instructed to grab a napkin, a birch beer

and find a seat.  Then the carvers went into action!

Because so many people on our tour had wanted their roast beef rare, this was a problem.  There can only be so much rare on any given roast.  So what Schwabl's did was the only fair thing possible and that is give us a mixture of meat that was well done, medium and rare.

I would have preferred all of my beef be rarer, but this was still a terrific sandwich!  And don't forget about the wonderful sides here.  The German potato salad could have been warmer, but was still very good.  The vinegary cole slaw might be even better.

Having eaten at Schwabl's and Eckl's during the same weekend, it is a virtual dead heat for me which place has better beef on weck.  For this weekend, I liked Eckl's better because all my sandwich had medium rare beef on it, while Schwabl's had a mixture, due to the circumstances.  The bun at Schwabl's is also much saltier.  But for me, when I think of Buffalo Roadfood, Schwabl's is the first restaurant I think of.  I love this place!

A few more photos from inside the restaurant, the parking lot and boarding the bus:

On the way to our next restaurant, Michael Stern announced that we were ahead of schedule, which meant we would now be able to squeeze in an extra stop on the day's itinerary.  It was at this point that ChiTownDiner and myself exchanged high fives, since we are all about trying to squeeze in that extra stop!

                          First to Ted's Hot Dogs

There are several Ted's locations in the Buffalo area, but we went to the one in Tonowanda.  The foot longs here are charcoal grilled.  In previous visits, I was told that I was not allowed to take photos in the grill area.  With a bus load of Roadfooders with cameras in hand, I was curious what would be said.  I didn't ask this time, just went ahead and took some photos and nobody paid any attention, so.....  The grill and my foot long getting dressed.

I went with relish, mustard, onion and the hot sauce.

As you can see, the grill blackens the wiener and gives it a charred, crunchy exterior.  All the condiments are good, but the hot sauce, with a considerable punch really takes this hot dog to another level.  Ted's is undoubtedly one of the great hot dog stands in the country!

                          The wispy, thin onion rings

are another highlight as is the Buffalo area only drink loganberry, which some found to be overly sweet.  Having more appetite and imagination than myself, CTD

also grabbed a burger and cut me off a quarter of it.  First time for a burger here, but it was also a winner.  Coming from a charcoal grill like that, I shouldn't be surprised.

                          Some more photos from Ted's:

I agree--an even better picture of Chris & Amy.  Downright 101 Dalmatians-y.  There are a lot of happy looking hot dog diners in Ted's!

Practically across the street from Ted's is Anderson's Frozen Custard

After we got done eating our hot dogs, we dashed across busy Sheridan Drive.

(Quick tip:  pausing to take photos of other darting across a busy street is not really a good idea)

                                I went for a cup with a pumpkin/vanilla twist.

It was ultra-creamy and smooth, with great pumpkin flavor.  I have eaten at this Anderson's at least a half dozen times and this was the best thing I have had.  Delicious!

Everyone seemed to be very happy for the unexpected visit to Anderson's.

Good call on the burger.  I think I have had one burger total in all my years at Ted's and a few grilled chicken sandwiches (plain and barbequed).  They are all outstanding as well, but it's hard to resist the hot dogs.  I used to have the chili on the hot dogs, but the chili can be inconsistent, while the hot sauce is always good.

Hope to see you and your entourage (I can't use the word "contingent" because I think it has been copyrighted by the Chicago / Milwaukee contingent) here in Buffalo again soon.  The time passed way too quickly last weekend, and it was a real pleasure to see everyone.

The bus had a diesel fuel leak and was replaced after it dropped everyone off at the next stop. I have diesel fuel sprayed all over my car and some on Judy's car.

                                            BB, wow.... wow wow.

I know this isn't proper for an RF trip, or even p.c. probably... but my favorite pic is the guy in the great t-shirt "You Big Dummy!". It made me chuckle remembering Sanford & Son.

Looks like an excellent trip!  (And stop making weight comments, WJ, you look FINE!)

So how do you follow up a stop for frozen custard?  With ice cream, of course!  Next, we headed for Parkside Candy.  I know there are lots of good ice cream parlors and candy stores in Buffalo, but the atmosphere at this place is special.  No Roadfood place evokes a feeling of a century ago like this Parkside.  The room is round, with soft lighting and, well, you just have to see it for yourself.  No surprise that a scene for the Robert Redford movie, The Natural was filmed here.

They use Perry ice cream here and make a wonderful assortment of interesting sundaes.  I was at the front of the line (imagine that!) and the woman taking the orders seemed all flustered, even though I believe they knew we were coming.  To make it easier on her, I just ordered a simple hot fudge sundae, although I regretted immediately not ordering something more unusual.  Sundaes typically come in attractive glass bowls, but mine was made in a throw away paper cup.

Still, a quality sundae.  I also bought a couple bags of their famous sponge candy to take home, one of which is already long gone.  No photos of the candy yet, so I will add that in later.

A few more photos from the sidewalk, while waiting for the bus.

Sadly, we were approaching the finish line.  But, you can't possibly come to Buffalo without sampling their most obvious culinary contribution, which is wings.  And what better place to do that than The Anchor Bar,

where Teressa Bellissimo is said to have first created this popular bar food in 1964.  In fact, they have a wood carved statue of her near the front door

and even have a parking spot reserved for her.

They brought out a big platter of wings to each table,

which were quickly attacked.  The wings were all mild/medium and they gave us cups of sauce on the side of varying heat.  That way, everyone should have been satisfied.  Watching people eat wings is fun, because there are all kinds of methods to it.  Some examples:

These run the gamut from the very girlie Emilou,

who eats them with a knife and fork, to Roadfood moderator Mike S., who has a much quicker way!

By the way, Anchor Bar isn't just a wing museum, I really like these ultra-crispy wings.  Not the best I have ever had, but still quite good.  Some more photos:

Time to head back to the hotel and call it a weekend.  But the excitement wasn't over just yet.  A young lady named Jojo

from Miami, via Hawaii, asked Michael Stern to use the microphone and promptly proposed to her boyfriend of nine years, Mike.  I remember sitting there thinking, is she really doing what I think she is doing?  Yup, she sure was!

Mike, of course, said yes and came up to kiss her.  Congratulations to the happy couple and undoubtedly, a Roadfood first!

Back to the hotel, where some (including cousin Johnny) had to made a quick escape to the airport for their flight home.  A group of die hards went to Antionette's for one last dish of ice cream, but it had been a long weekend and Mariton had a test in her class the next morning, so we drove home.  I pulled in my driveway a little before 8:00PM.

Nice.  Now I'm hungry & homesick.
