So glad to see that there is someone else who knows the right way to eat wings, and that is with a knife and fork, the way Emilou did (and the way I eat them).  To those who are debating whether to take the plunge, be daring and separate yourself from the crowd.  You say that the crowd will separate from you?  Well...

Great pictures.....................did not see one unhappy face!  By the way, who was in charge of passing out the TUMS?

What a time for me to bring my girlfriend and her daughter on their first Roadfood bus tour!  I was a little concerned that these two would be bored and disinterested.  Instead, they both told me over and over what a great time they had.  On the way home, the 13 year old asked when the next one was.

Previously to the tour, Stephen Rushmore posted in the forums that this would be the best bus tour yet.  And as someone who has attended every single one so far, I can confirm that he kept his promise.  The reasons:

      * The variety of food.  As much as I love Texas BBQ, by the time we got to the fourth place last year, I was bbqed out.  This year, it was a different food every time, except for custard and ice cream.  And who in their right mind would complain about that?

      * Everything was exceptionally well organized and I don't think we ever had any kind of wait.  All the restaurants were prepared and ready for us.  We also had plenty of time at each stop and never felt rushed.

      * The two day format was perfect.  At the end of the first day, I was ready to start all over and do it again.

      * All of the little extra surprises, from small (apples, beer and cider) to big (fitting in Anderson's Frozen Custard and the entire Cornell chicken dinner).

      * Of course, the people.  Go back and take a look at those photos and it is easy to see that everyone was having a grand time.  Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to meet everyone.  And I didn't get nearly enough of a chance to chat with Buffalo Tarheel, Bruce Bilmes, mr chips, Kerry Pill and even my own cousin Johnny, among others, as I would have liked.  But, it was still wonderful just to be a part of this happy crowd.

      * And #1, after having a rough Spring and Summer, it was great just having my buddy ChiTownDiner back doing what he loves.  His enthusiasm for Roadfood knows no bounds!.

A big thanks to Jane & Michael Stern and Stephen Rushmore for such a fantastic weekend!  My girlfriend and her daughter now think I am a little less crazy than before.

I also want to thank Chris & Amy (ayersian) for their birthday gift of Hot Dog Charlie's chili sauce.

That was very generous and I'm really looking forward to trying it!

Cliff, it was our pleasure -- you're one of our most important inspirations for RFing in general.  Now we think of you every time we look at our bracelets (thanks JRPfeff)!

I hope you like HDC's chili sauce -- and I should have a review of this Albany institution posted very soon.  Feel free to siphon off that layer of grease before eating, though... Chris

I think Buffetbuster did a fantastic job with this trip report. I'll probably add some photos over the weekend to this report since there really isn't more to add than what's been said. I had a fantastic weekend with some old and new friends.

                    One thing that Buffetbuster forgot

A photo of Chi Town Diner, brother Kerry and their friends Rick and Louie (all from Chicago!)

Cliff, you may be the most valuable part of roadfood other than the Sterns and the moderators. Your trip reports are a permanent record of great photos, interesting takes on the food you eat and the people you meet. I don't think I have conveyed how much I enjoy your writing and your sharing of your  experiences in these fora. I wish we could have chatted more in Buffalo but I hope you will be in my area at some point and I could show off my town. I also hope that Trudy, Sam and I return to Pittsburgh and sample the food wonders there.

                          mr chips-
                          I genuinely appreciate your comments.

I was thinking about when we were chatting at Parkside Candy and I had to get up to take some photos.  My priorities need straightened out!   Next year, I will leave the reporting up to someone else and spend more time meeting people.

Like I mentioned to you at Eckl's, unless something crazy happens at work, I am flying into Portland on the day after Thanksgiving and spending a week, plus.  No doubt, we will get together for a few meals then.

                            Ahoy mateys,

                            Longtime reader, first time poster!

Reading these trip reports is *almost* as good as being there. :)

I'm not sure it's possible to develop actual scurvy in just two days of eating only meat and ice cream, but if it is possible, this pirate gal did it. Craving orange juice and fresh tomatoes now.

The trip was a delight, the food was terrific, and we are all still swooning over the entire Schwabl's meal, Abbott's pumpkin custard, the VFD apple pie and JoJo's thrilling proposal.

Various combinations of the four of us college reunion girls hadn't seen each other in ten or twenty years, so we probably kept to ourselves a bit more than we'd planned, but it was delightful to chat with people along the way (when our mouths weren't full).

I posted our travelogue as a Facebook photo album so feel free to friend me (Suz Simanaitis) if you'd like to see it from a newbie's perspective.

Also: I can't believe I failed to mention this when given the chance and the bus microphone, but I hope you'll visit the blog I write with my pal Hilary Havarti, www.weheartmacandcheese.com if you share our fondness for that most comforting of comfort foods. It's half restaurant reviews (Los Angeles, mostly) and half recipe reviews, and it's all macaroni and cheese, all the time.

If you encounter excellent or unique mac and cheese in your roadfood wanderings and would like to guest blog about it, we'd love to hear from you!

In the meantime, I hope to submit reviews of LA-area roadfood supastars and look forward to crossing paths with other west coast folks soon.

                            Still digesting,
                            Suz

What I found funny is that the food I ate at Eckl's was the best I have had there.  Same with Ted's Hot Dogs.  And Anderson's Frozen Custard, too.  And I have been to Ted's and Anderson's at least 8-10 times.  Must be the company of fellow Roadfooders made it more enjoyable.

I had hoped to write my own trip report, but that looks increasingly unlikely. So I'll piggyback on buffetbuster's excellent report.

                                          Friday:

We avoided the interstates for our drive up. The weather and scenery were great; it was a very nice drive.

As we passed through New Bethlehem, we discovered that the annual Peanut Butter Festival was getting underway.

Uzi's, one of the best bakeries in Brookville, had a presence there, and so we felt it necessary to buy treats.

Lori got a heavenly peanut butter chocolate pie:

I got a walnut tart. It was much like a pecan pie, but without nearly as much of the non-nut filling:

We also bought a packages of cookies to share with Roadfooders, not realizing how utterly redundant they would be. If we ever go to Newcastle, we'll bring some coal.

As we were leaving, we saw that the Knights of Columbus were selling a Peanut Butter Hot Dog. We tried one. I asked what condiments they recommended, and they said that they recommended no condiments in order to taste the peanut butter flavor.
They were right--we could barely taste the peanut butter at all. I don't regret eating it, but I wouldn't seek it out again.

We stopped for ice cream at the Shannon Dell, in Shannondale, PA. Unfortunately, the food, while perfectly decent, is not nearly as Roadfoody as the sign:

We stopped for dinner at a place called Eddie's in Salamanca, NY. The fish fry was good, and big enough to feed both of us--but the salad bar was pretty dismal.

We did not go with the group to Eckl's, unfortunately.

                                          Saturday:

After we got back to the hotel after the fabulous Cornell chicken, Lori and I went along with the group going to Antoinette's. (We did not go to Steve's Pig and Ox Roast.) Lori ordered a sundae with French chocolate pudding and whipped cream (judgment: good, but not much different from hot fudge). I ordered the bananas foster ice cream with the butter-rum sauce (judgment: unfamiliar but tasty, with a lot more butter flavor than rum).

Note how pretty the whipped cream is. It was applied with a pastry bag.

                                          Sunday:

After the return from the Anchor Bar, we went back to Antoinette's. I'd noticed that both Antoinette's and Parkside Candy listed an unfamiliar "mint-pineapple" sundae topping, so we got a vanilla sundae with mint-pineapple topping. This turned out to be a layer of pineapple and a layer of mint syrup. It's not a combination I would have come up with myself, but it really worked quite well. (Apologies for the blurry photo)

My special private discovery came when I asked to use the bathroom at Antoinette's.
I got escorted through a room for packaging candies...
... down into a dimly-lit basement lined with shelves of boxes...
... past a hand-lettered sign saying "This Way Out" (implying that former passers-by had felt such a sign desirable)
... into a really pretty bathroom with lovely silk flower arrangements.

I vacillated about whether to tell other Roadfooders about the bathroom, but I decided that it would be too much of an imposition on the staff to escort us all through the candy room. But if you go back to Antoinette's alone, I recommend you check it out.

                                            Ralph,

Nice report and photographs.  I really enjoyed meeting Lori and you during that weekend.  Hope to see you both again on future Roadfood events.  (Funny comment about coals in Newcastle!  I am not sure that any food is ever redundant around Roadfooders.)

Really nice report and photos Ralph!  It looks like you took the scenic route to Buffalo, instead of the interstate.  Good for you.  I knew nothing about the peanut butter hot dogs before.  Thanks for posting the article.

To Buffetbuster and everyone on the Buffalo/Rochester tour..I missed you!  Wish I could have been there!

bb-love those shots of the BOW and potato salad at Eckl's and Jane modeling the WWbbD wristbands.  Classic!

TNT-glad you made the tour.  Looks like you had a great time!

CTD, looking good, sir.  Glad to see you back in the game.

I knew a girl at the NYC Dinosaur who used to say "Feck you!" all the time.  I'm just about drooling over the Rochester Dinosaur pics.  I love that they had salt potatoes for you along with those awesome beans and the tomato-cuke salad.  I wish they'd put the tomato-cuke on the menu here in NYC.

Professors Chris and Amy dissecting another delicious Roadfood sample!

I love that Fred Sanford t-shirt!  I want one of those. And the Cornell chicken with the homemade pies!  Now I REALLY wish I had gone.  BB, I think there is a future for you in commercials.  Could you taste the rainbow?!  Mariton jumping up like that reminds me of Jonathan Papelbon after the threw the last strike in the 2007 World Series.

Congratulations to Jojo and Mike!!!!!  What a way to cap a great RF tour.

BB, I have to echo what many others have said.  You really capture the spirit and essence of what Roadfood is all about:  the food, the people (the ones who make the food, sell the food and eat the food), as well as the regional and/or unique spirit that makes the places you visit so special.

I promised I would add a few photos, and commentary.

There really isn't much to say- every one else said it all and posted it all, there really isn't much more to add other than

On the way up to Buffalo and back I really didn't stop at anyplace "roadfood worthy" . I stopped in Albany (actually suburban Colonie) - both there and on the way back. On the way up, I stopped at JT Maxie's Bar and Grill for a delicious black and blue salad- Greens with tomato, red onion, sirloin steak strips,  blue cheese, craisins, walnuts, with blue cheese dressing and garlic bread- oh, I also got a a french onion soup. On the way back to Lil Rhody I stopped at I Love NY Pizza for a  couple of slices, one chicken parm and one eggplant and tomato.  Probably the only worthwhile pizza joint in te Albany area.

                                                            Anyway, back to Buffalo.

First of all, thank god for a real coffee house-

                                                            http://www.spotcoffee.com/

At Eckl's, I had the Fish Fry. I started out with the Lobster Bisque which I thought had too much of a "fishy" taste.

However the fish fry was pretty decent, the haddock was good, but the star of the meal was definetely the amazing German Potato Salad

which I finished off with a slice of berry pie

And of course no trip report is complete without a photo of Buffetbuster taking a photo
or as I call it "an al the mayor special"

I was having some serious problems with my camera that evening, and unfortunately my batteries died and I didn't have a chance to replace them. I figured we were all going the same places on Saturday and didn't have a chance to replace my batteries until Satuday evening.
                                                            just in time for

Cinammon and Orange Chocolate Chip ice cream at Antoinettes.

It was "ok" after reaching Ice Cream nirvana on my last trip at Hopscotch in Idaho Springs CO and Cow's Ice cream in Park City UT it seems all others have taken  a back step.

The next day, I enjoyed my pumpkin custard Waffle Cone at Andersons

but actually preferred my pumpkin custard waffle cone at Abbotts the day before, which unfortuntely I didn't get a photo of due to my dead battery
