One thing that's wrong with the Food Network - Sun, 10/4/09 8:40 PM
0
I have really disliked all these cake shows on The Food Network, but I have only recently realized WHY I hate them so much. The problem is that nobody ever actually EATS the cakes. It becomes construction projects from fragile materials, and there is usually no way to even get a slice out of one without the whole thing collapsing in a mess.

If nobody is going to eat it, then it shouldn't count as food.

I agree about the cakes in the shows on the Food Network specials/competitions. I can tell you that the cakes from the Cake Boss at Carlo's City Hall Bakery in Hoboken are for eating and quite a pleasure...

Buddy appeared on specials often and that is a big reason why he got his own show. Not because he won often or anything.

As someone who doesn't eat cakes or pies or any other sweet baked goods -- well sweet anything -- I have no interest in those programs.

I never watch the Food Network anymore, its just boring to me.  I hate reality shows anyway and thats what the Food Network seems to be now.
I am dissapointed in these cakes too and agree, I can't get myself to eat these fancy cakes, they really look inedible.

It's the old "as much fun as watching paint dry", I also find the cake shows a snore!

Exactly.  Remember when there used to be people who cooked while explaining how they cooked something?  I could give a rip less if some unknown "chef" from some unknown place can beat some barely-know FN chef in a race against the clock.  What I would like is to find new and different ways to cook things at my house, which is decidedly NOT a four-star restaurant.

And why do they air the same episodes 36 times a week?

Michael, your post really reminds me of an exchange between the nurse and Juliet in "Romeo & Juliet".

Nurse: Do you not see that I am out of breath?
Juliet:  How art thou out of breath, when thou hast breath-
To say to me - that thou art out of breath?

OR
Billyboy:  How can thou say that thou haveth no interest in sweet baked goods when thou haveth interest to post that thou haveth no interest?

Another thing wrong with the Food Network is the over-made up behemoth Paula Deen.

It might actually be easier to post a list of the things that are NOT wrong with the Food Network.  Just a thought...

There a lot of shows on food network that I don't watch. For various reasons I will not watch Emeril ( over enthusiastic audience and over used "BAM")
Paula Deen, ( too saccharine for my taste.)

Sandra Lee, (how many times do we have to see her with soft focus?)

The Neelys, (Cloyingly sweet!)

Challange, (too esoteric.)

  Shows that I will watch:

Throwdown! with Bobby Flay, (kinda cool to lose or win against a legend.)

D.D.D. with Guy Fierri, (funky and fun.)

Iron Chef, (I like the competition part of it.) Also I like watching other cooks than me sweat sometimes!!

Tyler Florence' Ultimate, (I use some of these recipes at home.)

Good Eats, (some great recipes here!)

Guy's Big Bite, (good pub food.)

I only get to see these shows when I'm visiting my father, so maybe I'm off-base on the things that annoy me....

I agree about the cake shows. When a plot's suspense revolves around whether the cake will be done on time, or whether it will collapse or not, then it's time to pick up a novel and get reacquainted with a real plot.

I kind of like the Barefoot Contessa shows, but it seems that all the ones I've seen (not many, admittedly) feature the Contessa laboriously cooking for a dinner party that her daughter or niece is having, while that daughter or niece is out buying flowers.  And then, the Contessa isn't even at the dinner. That strikes me as kind of sad, in a comic sort of way.

I'm also a bit annoyed by the camera's focus on Giada's bust during her shows.

I find Ted Allen annoying.

Sorry, that was more than one thing!

That's on Fine Living Network now, along with Emeril Live and The Best Of.

I do so agree w/you about the Neely's. They need to get a room instead of a show. They are so "honey this, sweetie these", that is makes me ill.

Well, in today's world, TV is as necessary as a computer.  I would hate to give either one up.

How do you figure?  I've never owned a TV in my life, and if no one else is home it never occurs to me to turn the one in my house on.

Edit:
Wait, I lied.  I still own the 13-inch black and white TV my dad bought me when I was ten...does that count?

in today's world, with the internet what it is, TV is becoming increasingly less and less important.  Or necessary.

YMMV.

I guess that there's no need for TV when you live in a happenin' place like G.R. - you can always drive over to Grand Haven and watch the Musical Fountain for entertainment,

I'm fairly certain I don't need your obvious sarcasm. Other than your BS post, what is there about TV that is necessary to everyday life, no matter where you live?
