I'd rather lose and be a Cubs fan than be a Yankees fan. That's an ingrained trait dating back to the great Ernie Banks for me. Actually I am a Minnesota Twins fan. We get to watch real baseball where a team scrappily fights back into contention with a team boasting a hometown developed hero and batting champion (Joe Mauer) payroll budget less than A-Rod's. I hope the Twins go on Tuesday, beat Detroit and then take on the Yankees in the Metrodome's last hurrah. The noise will be deafening if that happens.

I was born a Pirates fan, and I will be a Pirates fan to the day I die. It doesn't matter what the ownership does to the team. I'm a fan of the idea, of the colors, of the team; not of the ownership. If it is a bunch of lousy young guys, then I hope that the lousy young guys win, every night. If they don't, well, that's why there's another game tomorrow. If they end the season with 99 losses, well, that's why there's a 2010 season. And that's what it means to be a fan. I was a fan when they were good; I'll be a fan now, too. My bona fides: my brother and I are in the Pirate's 100th Anniversary Yearbook. That's me, right behind Willie's hand, and Jim front and center. You gotta go to a lot of games to improve your chances of getting in a shot like that; we went to about 65 games in '77, and about 50 in '78, including every playoff and World Series game in Pittsburgh.

Hello All, I admire and resent the Yankees. I am a Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians fan. There is no hope for me. I love the Minnesota and Detroit playoff situation. Baseball needs that type of drama. Take Care, Fieldthistle

It's a family tradition to hate the Yankees. One niece married a Chank-ee fan and has been drummed out of the clan. They have proved, over the years, that rich or poor it is great to have money----and the more the better.

If we were talking about outspending the next time consistently by a few million dollars, that would be one thing, but over the past 5 years, the Yankees have annually outspent the next closest team by a cumulative amount of $328 million, which is an average of 49% per year. That's a huge disparity.

If you choose to believe that I guess you can savor your delusions. Get away from the NY metro area and get out in the rest of the country and you will probably find more fans not directly living in a major league city and associated with a team to be more of a Redsox fan or a Cubs fan. I know they are more passionate in their fandom. I can tell that in regard to the turnout at the Twins games when the Redsox are in town. When the Yankees are in town their fans come under cover and apparently embarrassed to admit it. I once liked the Yankees in the Berra, Mantle and Maris era but the heavy handed George Steinbrenner sullied them forever.

I'm a Yankees fan - have been one my whole life. I remember in '61 the Nuns let us listen to the Series on the radio during class if we behaved. Everyone was a Yankee fan in WNY (pre-Mets), and I still love to go back home and see all the Yankee caps, car decals, shirts etc. displaying Yankee pride. I get interesting comments on my Yankees cap and hoodie here in Kansas, along the lines of "Do you just wear that to be cool?", but when I say "No - I'm from New York" they shut up and back off.

Bring on the Yankees. The Minnesota Twins just beat Detroit in the 12th inning of the single playoff 163rd game AL Central final.

alwayshungry475 San Fran Giants!..almost made it to the playoffs! I was 7 years old when I became a N Y Giants fan and then a S F giants fan and continue to be so to this day. Jackie Robinson was a childhood friend of my dad here in Pasadena so as a toddler my household and extended family were Brooklyn Dodger fans, but when the Dodgers traded Jack to the Giants after the 1956 season, my family switched teams-some to the Pirates and others to the Cubbies or Braves but my dad chose the Giants because of Willie Say hey Mays. Jack Roosevelt refused to join the Giants in 1957 and retired The Giants did better than expected this year, they had the best record in the NL of any team not making the playoffs, they'll be in next year-they have some very good young talent, especially on the mound and in the pen

Besides the fact that the Yankees are the best team in baseball, I know many fair weather Mets fans who always jump ship when the Yankees are doing well. Here in Rhode Island , there are many Yankees fans, I wouldn't be surprised if 1/3 of the state support the Yankees, many of the fans here are of Italian descent and for some reason feel more of an affinity with NY rather than Boston

In 1941 the Dodgers and Yankees met in the World Series. Everyone in the neighborhood was rooting for Brooklyn except Tony Cignarelli. We asked him why and he said that his father said he had to because they were the most Italian team in baseball. Besides Joe D, there were Rizzuto, Lazzeri and Crosetti. Mamma mia those were some good ball players. Mickey Owen let Hugh Casey's third stike on Tommy Henrick get past him, the Chankees rallied and won that game and the series 4 games to 1. And there was no joy in Brooklyn, might Casey had struck out--Henrick---- but lost anyhow. mighty Casey

The Yankees are a better team than the Twins. The Twins have been playing playoff baseball the last two weeks, came off an emotional extra-inning game last night, had to travel, and then had a rookie with 9 career starts going against C.C. Sabathia. It would have been an absolute shocker if the Twins would have won.

wanderingjew Tony Bad wanderingjew Here in Rhode Island , there are many Yankees fans, I wouldn't be surprised if 1/3 of the state support the Yankees, many of the fans here are of Italian descent and for some reason feel more of an affinity with NY rather than Boston I think that has to do with Joe DiMaggio. My dad grew up in Brooklyn as a Dodger fan, but also rooted for the Yankees during the DiMaggio years. And Yogi Berra too! Don't forget Billy Martin, Rizzuto and Crossetti

I don't expect the Twins to win against a purchased, bully on the block, obnoxious rich kid in the classroom team. Actually I feel the Twins have achieved a successful season already and have won the respect and hearts of many. The Yankees must win the World Series to have a successful year and if they do it would be a, "So what? You should have with that artificially assembled all-star team." The Yankees are an impressive team to watch but a sad reminder of fair play lost. Their win would be akin to putting illegal 13 and 14 year olds in the Little League World Series. Yeah, some accomplishment.

The Twins are actually my second favorite team, but the deck was stacked against them in Game 1, as it will be throughout the series. The Yankees just have too much depth. An upset would be great, but the reality is that the Yankees payroll is over three times that of the Twins and they have been able to purchase more talent.

I don't really know that it will come about this way? But if it does come about that you guys will pretty much get your hands on Joe Mauer on the Twelfth of Never, there will be noone laughing louder than me.

So you're saying that it's not true that the Yankees outspend everyone? The Yankees certainly have a rich tradition with Gehrig, Ruth and Mantle, which any baseball fan can recognize. I think Yankee fans just can't handle it when they realize that in the past 20+ years, the Yankee winning tradition has been purchased, not attained. If baseball ever had a salary cap, the first people to cry would be Yankee fans.

Hello All, I don't hat the Yankees, but the problem is they have made baseball painful to me. Their "stars"are no role models, and I feel out of touch with baseball because it seems it will always be the Yankee vs. whoever is in the playoffs or the World Series. I want real competition and excitement in baseball. I seek the day when the Cleveland Indians battle against the Chicago Cubs in a world series. Always having the Yankees in the mix bores me. Sorry for any hurt feeling to Yankee fans. I am just a dreamer, and baseball was always a sport and not a business to me. Take Care, Fieldthistle

No "Yankee Hater" here. I'm just a baseball fan. Anyone who doesn't see that the Yankees spending such a disparate amount on salaries - compared to EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE LEAGUE just isn't paying attention. Without the likes of the Royals, Twins, A's, Blue Jays and whoever else, the Yankees would have no other teams to play. The NFL realized this very early on and Pete Rozelle got every team in the league on board with a little program called "revenue sharing." He sold the idea that the financially dominant Giants would be better off sharing their money with the small-market Green Bay Packers -for the good of the league. He was right. It's tough to compare competitive balance between two different leagues, but since 1988 every team in the NFL has made a conference championship game (with the exception of the expansion Houston Texans). Every team - even the now-pathetic Lions made the conference championship game. That's only 20 years. Since 1999, every team (again, with the exception of Houston) has made the playoffs. Using the same 1988 benchmark, eight MLB teams have not won a pennant - including the small-market Royals, Brewers, Pirates, Mariners and Nationals (Expos). If you move that benchmark year forward just a little to 1991, you can also add the Reds, A's and Twins. In the NFL, almost every team can think that they have a chance to make the playoffs at the beginning of the season - or, at least, most seasons. Pirates fans enter spring training wondering which one of their veterans will get traded at the deadline. I went to a LOT of baseball games this year - in different cities. I bought tickets significantly below face value in Cincinnati (against in-state rival Cleveland), Kansas City, New York (Mets), Washington DC, and Arlington (in September, when they were still in the pennant race, against Anaheim!). I was fortunate enough to have friends secure tickets in Pittsburgh and Baltimore, but I suspect that I could have also found below-face value tickets for other games in those cities, as well. When I last spoke with Tony Bad, he told me that his friend who has $200 club-level tickets for the Mets sold a number of his tickets on StubHub for $10 apiece. None of this can be good for baseball. Period. To that end, the Yankees have fought revenue sharing tooth and nail since the topic was first broached. I wonder why?

This will be interesting because Joe Mauer is by far the best catcher in baseball and the Yankees will probably take a shot at getting him. However, the Twins will be driven out of town on a rail if they allow that to happen. Joe Mauer is going to be a very rich man no matter what.

The Travelin' Man has it nailed. There are individuals on the Yankees that I like- Derek Jeter, and Mariano Rivera, whose achieved what he has with only one pitch in his toolbox. The Yankee tradition is good for baseball, just as it is with the Canadiens in hockey, the Celtics in basketball, etc. All great stuff. But today's Yankees simply buy their winning seasons. It's Yankee money, not Yankee mystique.

Deal, as long as the annoying Yankee fans stop bragging and preening. Since that will never happen, I guess we push.

I personally would not mind a salary cap, I never like it when the Yanks spend ridiculous amounts of money on players and ignore developing prospects. But keep in mind that the Yankees have one of the more prolific farm systems in baseball. A salary cap would force them to develop their talent, rather than sell it off.

NYPIzzaNut saps I think Yankee fans just can't handle it when they realize that in the past 20+ years, the Yankee winning tradition has been purchased, not attained. Has it only been 20 years? The Steinbrenner era started in 1973 and IIRC his first marquee free agent signing was Reggie Jackson in 1977, so one could make a case that the "purchased" tradition has been in place for at least 33 and as many as 37 seasons now.
