Cart doggers, do you ever notice how many people want to see you while working? Thu, 10/29/09 8:13 AM (permalink)
Hello all,

I have been wanting to mention this for months now but it always slipped my mind so I figured I would do it while I remembered. I was wondering if anyone else on a cart notices or noticed before just how many people break their neck trying to get a look at YOU as they ride past? I see people looking at the cart all the time, that's normal. bright colors, food pics and just the overall "hmmmm' factor that goes along with seeing a cart out at work. But what was surprising to me and still is btw is the number of people who want to see you the operator. I see them turning their necks trying to see me as they ride by.  As I noticed this more and more I started doing a test to confirm if they were just looking at another view of the cart or if they were trying to see me. I started wiping down the cart and as a car on the road way is going past I would continue wiping around to the opposite side making them have to look in a certain direction if they were trying to see me rather than the unit.

Sure enough, time, after time people were turning their heads to try to see me as I cleaned one side or another, cleaned a bottom part or just tinkered with cords, etc. They would lean and stretch to see me over and over. When I stand in the working postion of the cart they will look and make direct eye contact with me ever time they ride past. I tried the test a few times before I concluded they just want to see who is working a hot dawg stand. Nothing bad about it at all, just something I noticed.  After so many people were looking I just started waving at them lol.

Just one of the little things you notice (well I do) when your out working. I guess it's possible I could be really good looking lol.

it's funny you mention this.  i think you're right.  if i'm standing behind the van they do turn clear around to see me.  i make it a point to wave at everyone when they look!  almost everyone looks as they pass the same place on the road.  it's like they just have to look

I always look at hot dog vendors hands. Maybe they think it means something else. In return hot dog vendors usually always ask me how old I am. Maybe they are they giving away free cookies.

I could see that up close but I am speaking of people riding by on the road. (to far away to see your hands)

Many people are interested in becoming a hot dog vendor.

Years ago many wanted to start vending machine businesses. Cash today businesses are very popular and that much more in a weak economy.

            Hey All,
I started my cart this last May and worked it every Friday and Saturday all summer.  It was set up in the town common in the town where we have lived for the last 12 years and know quite a few people.  People often honk their horn when driving by and I always try to return a wave even if I can't look up to see who honked.  As I was starting out one beautiful Friday morning I thought that I would try something different.  It was slow starting and I paid particular attention to people looking as they drove by.  When they made eye contact I waved.  Within a couple of hours I had noticed that some of the people I had waved to stopped and bought dogs for the first time this season.    I now make it a habit to wave to people driving by when I can and it does makes a difference.  Some ignore me, but some stop and then keep coming back.   Tom

I think people are looking at who runs the cart to see if they look clean and presentable. I feel if you look clean cut than your operation will also be clean. But then again it could be your six pack abs.................Bill

Smile real big and wave at the grumpy folks who drive by.... they smile back!

We try to smile & wave at everyone when we aren't making up an order.

definitely WAVE at and give a BIG smile to those that are taking a gander!!

it'll surprise/shock those that are just being nosy and you'll get a little chuckle out of their embarrassment that will brighten up your day.

more importantly, it'll be taken as a welcoming gesture by those that are looking specifically as a 'checking-you-out' to see if they'd actually want to buy food from you.  you can rest assured that, next time they're in the area AND hungry, they'll stop buy for a bite.

I work in an industrial area with tons of over the road truckers and spend 4 hours waving to every passer-by, making eye contact and they love it!! They remember and they always end up at my cart!

I bet that they are looking to see if theres a "buxomy" babe working the cart. Since I don't have "six-pak" abs, nor can I afford to pay a "buxomy babe" to run my cart, I am looking for a life-size mannequin that I can dress up in a bikini and take a dog into her hands and put it out in front of my cart while I hide out behind the cart. Now thats creative don't you think? hehe

I have an "ab" - singular.

                            "I am looking for a life-size mannequin"  I won't even go there.
Hummm.... On the other hand, she won't really nag you about your dirty clothes on the floor or how much beer you drink.

Don't minimize the impact of a bikini-clad mannequin!

                              Restaurant Sales up 40%:

The one day the mannequin stood in front of The Fowler Street Grill -- the restaurant had more customers than it's had in a month!

                              This one has video:

...an inflatable mannequin might be easier to haul around.

i can't really explain why, but my sales tend to be quantifiably higher when i put out my fish than when i don't.  i kept track over time and now i usually take it with me.

If they are not starring, your not flashy enough, we have been in the industrial park for 3 weeks now...everyone just stares and waves...In between rushes we play tennis in the parking lot, last week not too much time for that WOO HOO...I also have bikinis airbrushed on my aprons.....Hand sanitizer for my customers, lysol wipes on the outside at all times, I am always outside doing something.....It does not matter what walk of life people are, they want good food coming out of a clean place....And consistancy...keep going back..I would not eat street meat that I saw only once..

I get looks all the time. Some appear to be "gee, look at that guy, I wish I'd have thought of that". Others seem to be, "look at that loser. I hope he's got a pension coming in". lololol
Maybe they just can't look away from the devilishly handsome hot dog guy.
