Welcome to Roadfood GBaxter7. We like to talk about real Roadfood in this area. You might have better luck finding the answer to your question in the Fast Food and Chain Forum. Come on back here if you want to talk about your favorite Whitehouse Sub and or something like that. Ciao.

1- Sawdust- adds "roughage" to the sandwich

2- Styrofoam- great spongy texture

3- Crazy Glue-  binds the fillings together

why oh why do you folks who eternally claim to have absolutely no interest in fast food demonstrate their alleged complete lack of interest by typing post after post in this area of the forums?

I think everyone gets it - you don't like fast food franchises

I have no great love of subway myself, but sheesh, why the piling on?

Did the CEO of subway steal your lunch money as a child or something?

Some of the same folks piling on here were the same ones from years ago claiming they did not want to read fast food topics, and so the fast Food Forum was set up to wall off those 'unwanted' topics

Later, those same voices protested that topics from this forum should not show up in the latest posts list on the main page, and this request was granted as well, quarantining this section of the forums off from all the others.

The recent board upgrades make it possible to entirely remove selected forums - this one, perhaps? - from one's sight entirely.  Ie you can set your preferences so that this forum is entirely invisible - so that if you want, this forum does not in effect even exist.

The only folks who should be left here are those who have a genuine interest in fast food franchises.....no one else should have a reason to seek this area out.

So why isn't this the case?

I'd also like to extend a warm welcome to GBaxter7. From the location of Sydney and the use of the phrase "sandwich filings" I assume you are Australian. A quick search on Google Australia shows there are over 900 Subway franchises in Australia now, and I counted 15 in Sydney.

As you can see, all of the other posters so far are American. While the Subway chain of "sandwich bars" started in Connecticut (near New York City), I doubt the sandwich fillings you can select come from the USA. I also note filling differences, such as the fact that you have Swiss, Cheddar and Old English cheese available, while we have American, Monterey Cheddar, Natural Cheddar, Pepperjack, Provolone, and Swiss available.

I don't know how the shops receive meat fillings from the manufacturers in Australia. Here, meats such as turkey, ham, and roast beef are sliced at a factory, then shipped to the shops frozen. There are better meat fillings to be had from other suppliers - which the independent sandwich shops listed in our Sandwiches area tend to use.

I personally don't have any favorite fillings. Most of the taste of the sandwich comes from the "weeds" they put on, such as onions, pickles, jalapeno peppers, and the salad dressing. The only time I now eat there is because I am on the road, and it is the only place handy. Subway franchises are typically taken out by business people, not by people who have a passion to prepare good food.

We had a recent funny thread about the smell inside Subway "sandwich bars":
http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/Subway-m540873.aspx

Do your  Subways' also smell of baking bread?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but... you go, Mr. Jackson!  The people who think they're being all witty and everything by posting replies such as "sawdust" are really only showing how nearsighted and laughably curmudgeonly they can be.

(Wait, did I say "laughably"?  Erm, I meant that I was laughing with you, not at you.  Yeah, that's the ticket!  )

This post should be moved to "Off Topic and Lighter Fare".

I think this post is on topic because it does bring up some valid observations. Many of the posters above do have a genuine interest in fast food franchises. And their verdict is not favorable to this particular chain. In that thread about the smell in Subway shops, there were some posters who liked the smell and others who complained that the smell got on their clothes and lingered. In this thread, no one gave a thumbs up to any cheese or meat. They just favorited "weeds" or gave crackpot answers.

As I have mentioned several times here, some people seem to have a instinctive sense of "something ain't right" food. It's probably part of the survival instinct. An example is the roast beef at Arby's or Old Country Buffet. It is not prepared from raw meat on site; it may be pre-cooked in a commissary or be made from ground-up scraps. In the case of Subway hot sandwiches such as Teriyaki Chicken, it also was not prepared on site. It is "re-heated leftovers", if you will.

Sure, there are people who genuinely like Subway. But, the people on this board tend to have more experienced palates.

Subway does sell (personal) pizza in some shops. We had about four threads on the subject; this is the latest one:
http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/tm.aspx?m=326121

AFAIK, they come in frozen and are heated in the speed oven. They are not listed in the menu section of Subway's web site, but are listed in the ingredients section. I guess individual shops have the option to offer them or not. It all depends if you are a fan of frozen pizza or not.

The jalapenos they have at Subway are great, the only problem is you have to ask the guy/girl several times to put more than 3 or 4 peppers on the sandwich.

Subway used to have a Pizza Sub on the menu, Jared made them take it off.  This comes from a recent CNN report.

CNN

Some Subways will still make you the popular pizza sub from the 1990s. Once the chain decided to make their focus healthy eating, the pizza sub disappeared from the menu in most places (the word is that Canadian and Mexican Subways still offer them on a regular basis). But if you ask, lots of places will still make it for you. Be warned, though -- Jared would not approve of the nine slices of pepperoni and copious amounts of cheese slathered in marinara sauce.

That Pizza Sub was one of my favorites.  My opinion of Subway went down at about the time Jared and that stinky bread smell emerged.

Does anyone remember 'the old cut?'

Another favorite from Subway, though not technically a menu item, is simply ‘the old cut’, where they dig a trench in your bread instead of just slicing it, leading to better cold cut and veggie distribution. Also known for causing The Wing Effect, where your bologna hangs out the sides of your sandwich for some tasty pre-nibbles.

It's difficult to talk about favorite Subway stuff because it is a chain that offers less than really good submarine sandwiches here in the United States. The best sub sandwiches come from little, out-of-the-way places -- local Italian grocery stores, etc.

Here, a really good cold sub has Genoa salami, mortadella, capicola, roasted red peppers, olives, provolone cheese, good olive oil, dried oregano, salt, pepper and good bread.

Subway, here, doesn't offer any of those things, beyond the salami, the cheese and the oil, pepper and salt -- along with really bad bread.

GBaxter7, I invite you to look at the FAQ to this site:
http://www.roadfood.com/FAQ/WhatIsRoadfood.aspx
Roadfood "is non-franchised, sleeves-up food made by cooks, bakers, pitmasters, and sandwich-makers who are America’s culinary folk artists." Subway is made and sold by BUSINESSMEN.

Perhaps you would like to tell us a bit about yourself, about your interest in Subway, and if the sandwich fillings used by Subway are superior to those available to other "sandwich bars" in your area. We may be laughing, but maybe Subway is the best you have.

Here, here!

GBaxter7, would you mind telling us the motivation behind the original question. If you are a proprietor seeking customer input its better to just come out and say it.

Whoops.  Wrong thread.  I was looking for another one too, but I decided to post also.  This always happens when I stumble onto the wrong thread.

From EBaxter's post opened on egullet at the same time, in response to someone asking why?

I ask as a Subway store has opened near my house and I'm curious to know if there's any specialised fillings people request, instead of just ordering what's on their menu.

err, i wasn't looking for another thread, stumbled on this one, and posted anyway, as you seem to be suggesting with your childish attempt at sarcasm.  i was intending to post on another thread which i've also been following, and posted on this one accidently.  as there's no 'delete' function that i can see, i figured i'd just blank out my comment, removing the non-germane post (a concept you might want to consider).  i then figured i'd point out that you all have such awesome taste, and are able to illustrate this so well by sh*tting on the taste of others.

so many concepts seem so very difficult to posters here.  i've never seen such a thing.

It's funny but in our area we have many many sub shops from Publix to all kinds of mom n pop places but we also have Subway's seemingly on every corner. When I lived in another area Subway was one of a few choices near work so I ate there probably once a week. I usually had Turkey, no cheese, almost all the veggies sans olives and brown mustard. I was trying to lose weight and this was a good choice for a fairly low cal lunch.

.....as there's no 'delete' function that i can see,

Tommy, you can completely delete a post so long as you did not open a new thread, i.e. are the first poster. To "blow away" a reply to a post:
1. Sign In.
2. Find your post.
3. Place the cursor over "Message Options".
4. A box will drop down. Click on the second one from the top that reads "Manage Message".
5. In the box that opens up, click on "Send this message to recycle bin".
6. In the dialog box, click on "OK" to confirm the deletion requestion.
7. The page refreshes. Your message is deleted. The message numbers of later posts are renumbered.

If you started a new thread, all you can do is edit it to something like: "Moderators, please delete this unnecessary post".

Subs are regional in availability.  I was doing business in Canada a few years ago and Subway was about the only convenient place to get a sub - Tim Horton's doesn't count.  There was a Canadian sub chain that was an absolute clone of Subway, but we went to the original.  It made a quick, healthier than burgers and poutine, lunch.  I did get sick of them after a while.

I often used to go to Subway for lunch, Northern Ireland doesn't have a huge selection of places to eat like this part of the world and there definately is no sub shops apart from Subway.  Where I worked I had the choice of some expensive little cafe I wouldn't have had time to go to, McDonalds, Burgerking or the fish and chip shop, so I went to Subway because I could get a sandwich for £1.99, it was relatively healthy and it was quick which suited me.

My local Subway (then) had a manager's special on at Christmas which I kinda liked, hot chicken and stuffing, I thought it would be horrible but it wasn't too bad.

No I'm a proprietor seeking customer input.
This is a specific fast food franchise - non roadside
food board, so sue me if you dislike the post.

I don't dislike the post. I merely offered my opinion. If you have a problem with that, you sue me.

"I ask as a Subway store has opened near my house and I'm curious to know if there's any specialised fillings people request, instead of just ordering what's on their menu."

Actually, there is.

The Veggie Max. It's not on ANY Subway menu here, but if you ask for it, they will make it for you. It's basically a tvp patty & you can jazz it up with any of the available toppings, like marinara sauce, the philly cheesesteak toppings, etc.

It's the only thing I can think of not on the menu anymore. They won't do any of their sandwiches without ham anymore, or at least they didn't used to, so I stopped asking. They told me the meat comes in prepared like that (on a piece of waxed paper lined up with the other meats to go on each sandwich, rather than the person behind the counter having to keep track in their head what's on each sandwich.)  Awesome. *shakes head*

The tuna salad at Subway is dicey. I'd rather have Cousins any day. Also in the last 10 years or so they have hired an elephant to come sit on the bread after they make your sandwich. In college (mid-90's) when they put your sandwich in the bag, it filled the bag out nicely. Now it's almost like it was made on sliced sandwich bread, it's so flat.

I like the pizza and meatball subs the best. I never get anything else there.

...they have pizza ????

No, no, no. I was talking about the pizza sub, not pizza literally. The sub is just pepperoni, sauce, cheese on bread. Hey, my wife likes to eat there sometimes because she's allergic to shelled seafood and Subway offers the fake stuff. She likes it and brings subs home sometimes. I cant help it.

Actually, they have a sandwich, at least in the Midwest, that's pepperoni with a sorta tomato sauce that's supposed to taste like pizza. I've seen the odd one or two that do serve pizza, but I haven't tried either of these treats yet, and I do like Subway, more because it's cheap eats as opposed to good eats, but hey. I like turkey and the fake crab meat fillings.
