How could I forget... baked onions in cheddar cheese sauce.

What is that?!? Do you have a picture and recipe. Does it accompany another dish or is it a side?

Apple/sausage stuffing and green bean cassarole.  But the green bean cassarole's been going on so long in my family, it's evolved into an art.  No cambells soup, sauce is made from scratch, and the beans are canned from our garden.  The whole thing is pretty much from scratch, no cans allowed.

I swear....I'm driving out to ND for the 26th!

It would take a lot more than that to get me to drive out to Minot.

I didn't miss that. But have you been to Minot? I have.

I don't know how long it's been since you visited my fair cit... hamlet, but you have no idea how much things have changed recently.  There's a new addition to the grain elevator, and they blacktopped old Hwy 2 west so you don't fishtail on the gravel anymore.

I gave it a brief thought about heading up to Theodore Roosevelt NP after Devil's Tower last September but decided to drive straight across South Dakota on US 212 instead. That was enough experience. I already drove US 2 from Glacier NP across Montana and North Dakota...TWICE.

Back in the early 70s we had an architectural project in Minot. I cannot even remember what it was now but I do remember how relieved I was that I did not have to make those torturous trips from Minneapolis to conduct those job observations. I drew the long straw.

Well, to get back on the Thanksgiving topic... My favorite is the turkey sandwiches from the leftovers on white bread with Kraft mayo.  But during the actual meal I like Mom's cornbread dressing, yellow squash casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, and sweet potatoes with just brown sugar and butter.  No marshmallows, please.  I make the green bean casserole, and honey it is convenience foods all the way!  But there are additions to the original recipe.

Check out this Thanksgiving Menu from the New York's Plaza Hotel in 1899!!!

There's red-headed, teal, mallard, or canvas-back duck... or Long Island duckling, stuffed Boston gosling for $.75; veal breast for $.50. There are two kinds of green turtle soup and twenty-five desserts!!

ETR, you may find it even more interesting if you check out the history of the Plaza on the website you provided.  You will find that this had to be the menu from an older original Plaza Hotel opened in 1890 and torn down in 1905 to build the present-day one:

"The Plaza opened its doors on October 1, 1907, amid a flurry of impressive reports describing it as the greatest hotel in the world. Located at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, this luxury hotel was constructed in the most fashionable residential section of New York City.

The Plaza was the dream of financier Bernhard Beinecke, hotelier Fred Sterry, and Harry S. Black, President of the Fuller Construction Company. They purchased a 15-year-old hotel of the same name on the site. The three men set out to replace it with what is surely one of the most elegant hotels in the world.  Construction of the 19-story building (a skyscraper back then) took two years at a cost of $12 million - an unprecedented sum in those days."

(Sorry for the interruption; I am somewhat of a history nut.  Now back to your regularly scheduled discussion.)

6star thanks for the info. That does make it a lot more interesting. I enjoy history too and the different decisions and changes that people have mad in the past etc. especially with restaurants, hotels, menus and such. Can you imagine...$12 million, that wouldn't even cover the legal and permit fees now-a-days!

It's a truly gorgeous place:

When the "new" Plaza Hotel opened in 1907 a room was $2.50, now that same room is $3,750! I can't really too much information about the original one that obviously served this menu. Oddly it was only there for 17 years.

....wait, I found a little bit of info:

In 1881 an apartment building was planned here to be built at the location.

It was named Plaza because it was located at the Fifth Avenue Plaza, now known as Grand Army Plaza.

When it was nearly finished the developers ran out of money and were foreclosed by the New York Life Insurance company who hired the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White to transform the apartment building into a hotel.

This first Plaza Hotel opened October 1, 1890. The eight-story building had 400 rooms.

In 1902 the hotel was bought by the Plaza Realty Co., who hired architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh.

The Plaza hotel was rebuilt by Hardenbergh as a larger version of the Dakota (a luxury apartment building in Manhattan he had designed)

Now as we know thanks to you, the "new" Plaza Hotel opened in 1907 at 18 stories and 805 rooms.

It has been featured in The Great Gatsby, Crocodile Dundee, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Plaza Suite and Home Alone.

Tex-Mex Cranberry Salsa
1 16-ounce can Ocean Spray Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce
1/4 cup canned jalapenos, chopped
2 green onions, sliced
chopped cilantro to your taste
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon lime juice
Combine all ingredients in medium mixing bowl. Serve with nacho chips or as a condiment for poultry or pork. Makes about 2 cups.

That sounds awesome, I bet I'd love it. Some of my favorite jams/jellies are those weird combination of sweet and hot. I usually find great ones at the Famers' Market, Habanero Peach, Jalapeno Pear, Raspberry Chipotle...Pepper Jam, etc.

I found some other cool Thanksgiving dinner menus from over 100 years ago. It's interesting to see how it's changed and evolved.

The Brackenridge Hall at the University of Texas, Austin in 1892:

The Boston Cooking School Cookbook in 1896:

The Chief Petty Officers' Mess Menu from U.S. Naval Repair Base, San Diego, California in 1944:

I always look forward to a nice sweet potato casserole but since we've stopped having Thanksgiving dinner at my grandmother's I haven't really enjoyed one.

I am always hopeful and anxiously await it but they tend to be overly sweet, what with all the brown sugar and marshmallows. She made the best (well actually she acted all Bourgeoisie on Thanksgiving and had someone come over and cook most of the stuff and I think it was that lady's recipe). Too bad I'll never know what it was, it's been nearly 20 years.

I just saw this Boston Market sweet potato casserole with oatmeal and pecan streusel on top! That sounds incredible to me. Has anyone tried it?

Does anyone have a really good sweet potato casserole recipe?
