Photos of Regional Food by State Thu, 02/4/10 9:46 PM (permalink)
Similar to my oldie but goody "regional food defined by location" thread , I thought I would include my photos that I've take over the last four years that I've owned a digital camera. These photos will not only include food associated with a specific state but will also include food associated with that specific region as well as ethnic cuisine that tends to be popular in that state as well.

It will be in alphabetical order and will be a process in the works....

So I'll start out with

ALABAMA

Oyster Sampler (Wintzell's Oyster House, Mobile AL)

West Indies Salad (Wintzell's Oyster House, Mobile AL)

Gumbo (Wintzell's Oyster House, Mobile AL)

Ribs (Dreamland BBQ Mobile, AL)

BBQ Chicken with Alabama White BBQ Sauce  (Miss Myra's Pit BBQ Vestavia Hills AL)

Lemon Pepper Catfish (Isaiah's Restaurant Montgomery AL)

Peach Cobbler (Isaiah's Restaurant Montgomery AL)

Lemon Icebox Pie (Miss Myra's Pit BBQ Vestavia Hills AL)

Hushpuppies (Wintzell's Oyster House Mobile AL)

Banana Pudding (Miss Myra's Pit BBQ Vestavia Hills AL)

Added to Dale's Alabama List....From BIG BOB GIBSON'S BBQ in Decatur, AL. We enjoyed the BBQ Baked Potato. More than enough for one big guy!

Add to the Seafood Places...Hunts Seafood in Dothan, AL. Great Oysters- These are cheesey Broiled Oysters and our favorite Seafood Snack...Crab Claws !!

Thanks Dale. Here is my contribution for the    TEXAS  entry.

Now BBQ can reach nationwide these days, but TEXAS BBQ has a style all it's own.

Here are a few simple examples of "Good" TEXAS-Style BBQ we have encountered !!

First, One of our favorites, LOUIS MUELLERS, in Taylor, TEXAS.

Then we see the wonderful Pork Chops and Hot Links put out by SCHOEPF's BBQ, in Belton, TEXAS.

Another good example can be found at the Salt Lick BBQ near Austin. Here is the 'inside' Pit and our selection. Not quite as good as some others, but still a fine example of Texas BBQ.

AND  Finally our last photo...certainly not the least !!! Here is our meat as served at KREUZ MARKET BBQ. Primitive in presentation as Texas BBQ is meant to be, but outstanding in Quality !!

Bushie brought us some of the Famous Round Rock Do-Nuts and some Sausage-Stuffed Kolache for breakfast one morning during our visit.

We haven't figured the best way to cook and serve these guys...BUT they are a Texas Specialty 'FER SURE'!!!

Although we live on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, The influence of KENTUCKY and the specialties for which it is known lends to us is impressive. It is a common expression to refer to this area as "KENTUCIANA".  Here are a few examples of regional foods (and beverages) that are noted for our home area.

In the area of BBQ (One of my favorite discussions) Kentucky, especially Central and Western Kentucky is noted for its use of MUTTON as the meat of choice for it's BBQ.

One of the best known sources of Mutton BBQ in the Owensboro, KY area is the MOONLITE BBQ. Here is a typical plate of their BBQ with some of the other Buffet items surrounding the Mutton.

Here Wandering Jew is trying to capture a 'Kodak Moment' at the BOOTLEG BBQ in Louisville. His plate has Pork Ribs and a MUTTON Sandwich. Louisville marks the eastern edge of the BBQ MUTTON Belt in Kentuciana !

Summer months bring out the Community BBQ Picnics all thru this area. Here in Wavery, KY in June the community works together to put on a huge BBQ Feast. MUTTON is the Main Meat of Choice, followed by Pork. Here are a couple of views of that BBQ in progress.

Coming Back to Louisville, we find a couple of the local special dishes. Most Noted is the HOT BROWN, A cheesey-Bacon dish that originated here at the Brown Hotel. (Tom Jackson Photo)

The Brown Hotel also puts on a fine Breakfast full of Southern Treats like Biscuits anf Gravy and Hickory Smoked Bacon.

LYNNS PARADISE CAFE in LOUISVILLE is more of an event than a location. Their version of many breakfast dishes show the influence of Kentucky! Here is Lynn's version of BOURBON FRENCH TOAST ! Using Kentucky Bourbon in the recipe makes many of the choices seem quite special!

All this makes some of us Roadfooders anxious to find the source of fine Bourbon when we visit the Louisville area !!

One last stop here in Kentucky...downstate, near Fort Campbell is the KNOCK'EM HILL BBQ IN HEARNDON, KY. Noted for it's mamoth Pork Chop Sandwich, it represents the more traditional Pork BBQ available around the Commonwealth!

                  Al,

Between your photos and the telephone conversation I just with Travelin Man about the seafood omelet he had this morning, my stomach is seriously growling with hunger pangs!

Your Texas BBQ  photos do some serious justice. Unfortunately my Texas  are extremely weak by comparison as I was still a novice with the digital camera at the time and I completely forgot to take photos at Kreuz's because the  Q was so amazingly  good.

Yikes! I would have to pull the skin off those peppers. My stomach belched just looking at em. :)

I handled the Italian Beef and Peppers just fine....but when I tried the Sausage and Peppers in Red Sauce, I suffered some distress....after enjoying the sandwich immensely.

Now to try to get closer to the Alpha Order that Dale is trying to organize...Here is our ALASKA  entry-

First was a snack stop on the way to LLeechef's boat anchorage in Whittier, AK.  We got some Local Cherry Cream Soda and a Cinnamon Roll that was built to help Miners Winter-over !!

In the tiny 'out-of-the-way' village of HOPE, AK we found the Seaview Cafe and enjoyed a delicious lunch of freshly caught and fried Halibut!

We enjoyed some of the great Seafood for which the Alaskan Shore is well-noted, at Kincaides in Anchorage. At the time this place is where Lisa (LLeechef) was basing her Airline Catering business.

                          Janet enjoyed this SALMON entree-

For me It was a combination of wonderful AHI TUNA and SHRIMP

Then we shared some SCALLOPS wrapped in Proscuito for a finale. A bit fancier than most Roadfood...but a great example of the regions Super Seafood !!

Did you ever wonder why there are no states whose name starts with a "B" ??

PS- I have a WISCONSIN series ready to add, but I'll hold on until you guys get further along in the Alphabet. I can edit in a photo or two into someone elses entry, so someone needs to do an Indiana, a Maryland, and a Georgia entry soon !!!

Probably for the same reason there are no states that start with a  "Z"

I won't be getting to those states for a while. I'm going to try to complete California today (theres alot) and perhaps squeeze in Colorado before I start the roadtrip which coincidentally looks like I'll be flying out the same day the alleged snow storm is supposed to hit here in Rhode Island.

I wish we had the capability to do a list of states(one post for each State), then allow any and all who have photos to contribute for any or all of the States to Post them on the respective post-spaces.

As a Moderator I can 'edit' any post...so I can add my photos to Dale's post, but he can't add to mine. If we could, we would do 50 posts here and let them fill with the absolute best food you could imagine.

YEAH this makes me want to hit the road also.  I have 10 photos ready for Wisconsin..and a bunch sitting for a chance to show off some great Tennessee foods. Plus a few for various other places...Bumbleberry Pancakes in Springdale, Utah or maybe G & M's famous CrabCakes in Bal'Mor.

My only concern is, as you know,  that "a select few" are going to post Photos of Matzoh Ball Soup for Nebraska or photos of Aunt Martha's Pot Roast

I understand about the 'regional Specialties, Dale. I wonder how we can classify those universal items that really are great roadfood, but are known all across the USA...Burgers, Hot Dogs and P I E to name just a few.

Where are you going to put your Basque Food Photos... Idaho or Nevada??? or both?

Al, I think it may not be that convoluted. For example- NY/NJ/CT style hot dogs, Coney Dogs from Cincinnati and Detroit and Chicago Style Dogs. Or Onion Burgers in Oklahoma, Butter Burgers in Wisconsin and Steamed Cheeseburgers in Connecticut, I guess you can even throw an avocado on it and call it a California Burger. Same thing with Pies, ie. Blueberry in Maine, NYC Cheesecake, Sour Cream Raisin in the Northern Midwest, Key Lime in FL etc.

                                                  Probably a little of both.

This is a real fun thread. I'm sorry I broke the Alpha-order sequence, but now I am combing my photo files for food shots from our trips that I can honestly say 'meeting the regional examples' in your criteria.  I am not as much of a 'Purist' as you, but do agree that we should try to keep this as 'regionally honest' as we can.

Example, I have a good shot of the BBQ at the "Serious Texas BBQ" in Durango CO, but I won't post it as it says nothing about what makes it represent the Colorado image. If it were Buffalo Ribs (a fun thought) I wouldn't hesitate...but since it is Pork Ribs and Beef Brisket, both very good eating, I will hold off on posting it. Damn, I need to find that Navejo Fry Bread !!

Terrible travel weather here. 8 inches of new snow on the leftover ice from the weekend storm. Temp dropping at noon into the teens and wind starting to whip the snow around. Hope all you Glee Clubbers are safe and sound.
