RF meet-up at Carnegie Deli in New York City THREAD BUMP! New date Sunday 11/14/10!!!!!!!! - Mon, 02/22/10 2:38 PM
0
I was in touch with a certain Mr. Tony Bad this morning and we haven't broken bread together since the NYC Hot Dog Tour a coupld of years ago.  In the interest of remedying that, we thought a meet-up was in order.  I have always wanted to try the Carnegie Deli, but couldn't bring myself to go it alone, despite the dozens of times I have walked past it on the way to work.  My exercise routine can't beat the Roadfood out of my altogether!  We were thinking a Saturday or Sunday might work best.

I'm available:

SAT 03/06

SUN 03/07

SUN 03/14 - I know there is a South/Central NJ Hot Dog tour happening on the 13th, so this might be a "last option" date.

SAT 03/20

I can think of a few other stops to make if anyone is interested in walking through the city/riding the subways.

The Donut Pub on 14th Street & 7th Avenue - a 24 hr donut shop.  They make what many would consider "traditional" style cake and raised donuts.  Very good.

Leo's Bagels - for me, the best bagels in the city.  Located in the Financial District.

City Bakery - on 18th Street near 6th Avenue for amazingly thick, rich hot chocolate.  Pricey at $4.50 per cup, but I still think it's worth it to drink what to me is like a sinful melted chocolate bar!

Amy Ruth's - on 116th Street in Harlem.  Really, really good soul food.  They have a section of the menu that is just chicken and waffles variations.  An incredible red velvet cake on the dssert menu OR

we could stop by Piece of Chicken, a take-out only soul food place on West 45th Street near 9th Avenue that has good fried chicken, collards, candied yams, etc.  It's all ala carte and most items are $2-3.

We don't have to hit all of these places or any of them, just wanted to throw them out there.  Lemme know if you're interested and what date is good for you!

*************03/12/10 UPDATE********************

I figure we could meet-up at Murray's at 10:00am and then make our way from there.

The Donut Pub is a short walk from there.

We can do lunch at 12:00 noon at the Carnegie Deli.  It's in Midtown and a long walk away.  We can take the subway or walk if people are up for it.  I'm good either way.

If there are any sightseeing/points of interest along the way, I'll try to point them out as we go.

I'll also try to incorporate some pictures of most of these places and their signature foods in this update before the meet-up!

Let me know if you can make it and if you need my cell number.  See you soon!!

5.)  Ray's (est. 1959) - classic NYC slice.  Some off days, but more days where they are "on"
27 Prince Street (btw. Mott St. & Elizabeth St.)
      New York, NY 10012
      212-966-1960
      Hours:  12:00 noon to 11:00pm

After Ray's, there is a multitude of great eats on the way to and near Vanessa's.  The Doughnut Plant, Katz's, Yonah Schimmel's (which just turned 100 years old in 2010!!), Economy Candy, Essex Street Market, Roni-Sue Chocolates (home of the chocolate covered bacon known as "Pig Candy") and sugar Sweet sunshine Bakery.  And if anyone is really hungry for a true NYC experience, there is usually a hot dog cart to be found almost anywhere in the city, along with nut roaster carts and pretzel carts.  Unfortunately, Kossar's Bialys and The Pickle Guys are closed on Saturdays.

6.)  Vanessa's Dumpling House (est. ???) - My new place to take out-of-town guests.  Cheap, filling dumplings.

      212-625-8008
      Hours:  7:30am to 10:00pm

      Parking:  Not sure???
      No website
Cash & Credit Cards accepted ($15 minimum for Credit Cards)

WHAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING:  Cash, comfortable shoes, bottled water.

PARKING:  Not having been a car owner in many years, I can't speak to the availability of parking near any of these shops.  The subway might be the best way to go.

As details start to come together, I might be interested.  I go to the city pretty often, but none of my friends ever want to go to these wonderful places.

Ditto here - can't do the 6th or 7th, but if you end up with either of the other dates Tim and I could be game to go! We were in the city for a beautiful weekend in January and introduced niece and nephews to Carnegie, and had an excellent experience.  Would love to try a new bagel place, usual haunt is H&H on way out of the city. Keep us posted.

  Hello again dear friends,

Here is what I was thinking for the meet-up:

-A bagel stop at Leo's (Financial District) or Murray's Bagels (6th Avenue btw. 12th & 13th Streets) in the morning around 10:00am for a bagel and a schmear (No Toasting!  haha)

-Head to The Donut Pub on 14th Street & 7th Avenue for some old-fashioned cake and raised donuts

-Lunch at the Carnegie Deli at 12 noon.

-For those who may still have an appetite, we can head to Gem Spa in the East Village off of St. Mark's Place for a classic NY Egg Cream.

-Then down to Ray's Pizza on Prince Street in Soho for a slice. (For me it's the one Ray's I really like, but it can be hit or miss with the quality as is the case with any slice shop)

-And finally, down to the Lower East Side to Vanessa's Dumplings on Elridge Street for some great scallion pancakes and steamed or pan-fried pork and chive dumplings (plus you can watch the little old ladies making the dumplings through a glass window in the back of the shop)

These are just the ideas I had.  I wanted to make it as NYC-centric as possible.  Please let me know if this sounds good.  I figured since Carnegie would probably be a big meal, the other places would be a mixture of small snacking type food and/or foods you can take home with you.

Lexi, I'm sorry you can't make it!

I was going to throw in a Harlem soul food/chicken & waffles place and a stop at Yonah Schimmel's just to make it even MORE regionaly correct for YOU, WJ!!  But I figured that would be pushing the bounds of my stomach, especially since I haven't done much Roadfooding in a while!

I've walked by Carnegie countless times, but never been there.  I did have an Egg Cream at Gem Spa last year and I really liked it!

I've enjoyed the Carnegie- I haven't been there since 2003, but the Woody Allen (pastrami and corned beef) has to be one of my favorite sandwiches of all time.
Don't forget to get the cheese cake too!

billyboy - sounds like a great day for NY noshing! Always wanted to try the "original" Ray's (I think your location is it, yes? On Prince...). Wondering about transit, we'd be driving in from CT, and thinking to park somewhere near the last stop, assuming subway and foot travel for the day?

TnT, Yeah I was thinking of a combination of walking and subway for the tour.  As far as parking, let me do a little research.  I sold my car before I moved here, so all things related to four wheels are not my strong suit.

TTM, WJ, I'm hoping you might be able to provide some parking insight here.  Might there be a place near Vanessa's Dumplings/Katz's that is good for parking for say, half a day?  Would you recommend a garage?  Thanks!

Sunday is much more parking-friendly than Saturday, if my memory serves me right.  Better than myself and WJ, Tony Bad has often steered me in the right direction when seeking transport to/from and in NYC.

I believe that most of the parking on the LES is metered with a 2 hour limit, but I could be wrong.  There have been times when I have gone to Katz's where I have scored an immediate parking spot, and there have been times when I have circled for what seemed like days.

Why don't you drive to a Metro North stop in CT and take the train into Grand Central?

We've done the train from New Haven quite a bit, but between train fare and parking at the station (plus it's an hour drive to the station), it's easier and sometimes cheaper to drive in, plus we have the luxury of coming and going as we please. Plus - I have the feeling we may be loading up on take-home noshes after this trip so won't need to take the haul on the train ;-)
There are a couple of good websites with parking maps/rates, so I think we'll be ok provided we have that last pit stop identified. Worse case we park closer to mid-town or west side and grab the subway.
billyboy - provided we're not due for another blizzard, count me and Tim in for the nosh - we may need to meet you at the second stop depending on traffic and timing/parking, so would be great if you can share a cell phone number just in case. I'll send you a private message with ours.

Wow - GREAT itin, and thanks for pulling together all that info in advance.  Keeping fingers crossed for a beautiful spring day to walk around a great city and attempt to work off at least 10% of the calories I intend to ingest along the way.  My eyes popped out of my head when I read your "between Prince's and Vanessa's" list - we could make a day just in that area alone.  MAY have to try pig candy...but am sad no Pickle Guy available.

If no one is driving, I will take a bus into Port and meet everyone at Murray's.

If everyone decides to take the subway, what type of change is required?

Hey HDK, no change is used for subways.  They run on a Metrocard system now.

The best deal would be to get a 1-Day "Fun Pass".  The Metrocard vending machines are in most if not all subway stations.  They take cash and credit/debit cards.  However, I think they only take bills as large as $20 or only give change for as much as a $20 bill.  And the change is not in bills, but in Sacagawea $1 coins.  FYI.

1-Day Fun Pass
Cost: $8.25, reduced fare not available
Good for unlimited subway and local bus rides from first use until 3 a.m. the following day. Sold at MetroCard Vending Machines and at neighborhood stores. Not available at station booths.

Looking on Google maps, I noticed that there is a Papayaking across from The Donut Pub. I may have to squeeze in a drink and dog while we are there.

I was gonna suggest a Sabretts or a trip to a Papaya spot!  There is a Gray's Papaya on the corner of 6th Avenue and West 8th Street that for me is the best one in the city!

May I join you at Carnegie at noon? If so, is there any way that I'll recognize the group (other than yummy donut crumbs on all your coats)? By the way, I'd vote heavily for a visit to Amy Ruth's. We could continue up the 2/3 subway from Columbus Circle, so it's an easy jump from the Carnegie (though we may all get coronaries afterward).

Claude - a friend of mine from Montreal

If I've forgotten anyone or others want to join in just let me know.  Half of the places are cash only and the other half have minimums for credit cards, so the moral of the story here is...BRING CASH!!  :)

The forecast is calling for sunny skies and a high of 70 degrees with a light breeze of about 5mph and no rain predicted.  Comfortable walking shoes and bottled water are recommended for maximum comfort.

Public restrooms are located in most nearby Starbucks franchises should you need them.

We'll start cruising the not-so-mean streets of the city at Murray's Bagels at 500 6th Avenue at 13th Street at 10:00am.  Some of the people on the list are just meeting us for lunch at Carnegie Deli, so part of the plan is to get there at 12 noon to join them.

UPDATE 03/19/10 - If anyone reading this wants to join us at the Carnegie Deli, please let me know so that I may get a head count in case I need to make a reservation.  I called them already and I fudged a bit saying we had 15 when it's really closer to 10 people.  They don't have a table to reserve at 12 noon tomorrow, but they advised me to call 30 minutes before we get there and they may be able to set something aside if it isn't too busy.

I tried to pick places that:
A.) have classic/iconic NYC foods,
B.) that I personally like (with the exception of Carnegie as I have never been there),
C.) are such that you could go there and get just one thing or a sample and not feel the pressure to eat a whole meal.  I figure that concept would make it easier to make more stops.  In half of these places you can buy foods to go (bagels, donuts, dumplings).  Bring a bag of some sort if you want to take provisions home with you.  We can share at Carnegie if people are cool with that.

With the exception of Carnegie Deli, the stops on this tour are fairly small in size (Gem Spa actually does not have any seating as it is a bodega that happens to sell egg creams), so we may have to jockey/be assertive for table space.  I'll whip you all into walking, talking, cursing, acting, eating, breathing (okay, maybe not breathing.  I mean, really, who WANTS to breathe NYC air?  Seriously.) city dwellers before you know it!  Just wanted to let you all know.

Please move your trays into the upright position, turn ON your electronic devices and use them should you need to reach me.  I know we'll have a pleasant day and thanks for choosing Billyboy Tours!!

In the true spirit of the NCAA tournament, you're going to need someone a lot bigger than Lexi to "box out" to help get a table at Vanessa's!

Geez...are you sure New York can handle an assertive group of people? New Yorkers are way too laid back to know what to do when confronted with assertive people trying to get table space.

This sounds like a great trip. I'm not sorry that I'm going to be in Pittsburgh this weekend, but I am sorry to miss out on this. Can't wait to see the trip report.

Oh Captain, My Captain! Digging the itin, going to be a beautiful first day of spring for the NY Nosh. We're headed in early, so expecting to be meeting for bagels reasonably near the start time. We'll give you a buzz if running late.  Terri & Tim

Billyboy - I'm sorry to say that I won't be able to make it now.  My friend in Queens flaked on me, and there is no way we'd be able to get down there early enough now.  Have a great time, and think of me while drinking a chocolate egg cream.

Will do.  I'll have an extra egg cream and donut in your stead!

Sorry folks, the NYC Roadfood Meet-Up this Saturday March 20 has been postponed until a later date.  Maybe we can look at a Saturday or Sunday in April?  My apologies for any inconvenience.

Is any Roadfood member allowed to join up in the festivities on the new date or do you have to be an insider?

Anybody can join in.  I won't be available the next few weekends, but I'll look at my calendar this weekend and propose a few new dates.

probably depends on your definition of insider. As long as you don't talk about the Yankees or Madonna you should be fine.

Considering I'm a Mets fan and have no desire to talk about washed up singers, I don't think that should be a problem :)

Let us know new dates, April is a bit out of control already ;-)  Since it was such a beautiful day, we headed down to the city anyway. Kinda glad it was postponed, since we didn't expect the HUGE delays driving we ran into from all the storm damage in the southern part of CT, and we would have been running really late to meet a group. We hit Katz's for pastrami, Ray's for a slice, and Vanessa's for dumplings. A little shopping, a little people watching - what a great way to spend the first day of spring. No pics this time around, but next time! (btw - Vanessa's was AMAZING - and the prices were ridiculous. $1.00 for four fresh-made dumplings? and the flavor has now spoiled me for anything local in our area here in CT - no comparison!)

I'm sorry, but I'm glad it got postponed.  Now hopefully I can go.

I did get down to Queens on Saturday.  We went to get sandwiches from Sorriso's Italian Pork Store .  We took the subway to Corona park right in view of Citi Field and some very low flying planes.  I had Hot Cappicola and Homemade Sopressata with fresh Mozzarella and roasted peppers on a hard roll.  It was a beautiful day.

I have a wedding to attend on April 10th.  As of now, I think I'm available any other weekend next month.

TnT, will do.  I hear ya on April.  I may have to look at May to reschedule!  Glad you could make it down anyway.  I had a feeling you might like Vanessa's.  Did you get to look through the window at the ladies making the dumplings?

Foodosaurus, that sandwich sounds awesome!

Unfortunately, I won't be around on 7/10 or 7/11.  I've got a wedding to attend and I'm running a 15K in Utica, NY on the 11th.
