Gotta tell ya little z, Mrs. Roadhouse and I visited NOLA back in October for the first  time.  We hit a lot of New Orleans classics and encountered Lucky Dog carts on nearly every street corner of the French Quarter.  We were tempted but never succumbed.

Couple of issues kept us from indulging.  First, there's just so much good food to be had in your great city we didn't want to waste belly space on Lucky Dogs and risk missing out on something really worthwhile.  Second, we're from Chicago.  And we've spent time with Detroit's Coney Dogs and a variety of New York dogs.  It's gonna be a tough sell to get me to try a Hot Dog off a cart in New Orleans.

Are you saying Lucky Dogs are worth the calories?  Should we have foregone a Muffaletta sandwich or an oyster Po' Boy in favor of a Lucky Dog?

I eagerly await your answer.

I sense a hard sell here..

My preferred time for enjoying a Lucky Dog is after a night of drinking. One of those gut bombs is exactly what the doctor ordered to soak up some of the effects of earlier transgressions. Since most food establishments are closed by then, there should be no conflict with other meals.

If you are used to lots of foreign stuff on a hot dog, perhaps you might not approve, but with just mustard, onions, chili I think they hold their own.

Thought I had at least one picture of the product - they do tend to leap into my stomach before I can get a few snaps. I'll try to remember where.

Any idea what type of dog (beef, pork/beef, natural casing, preparation style? ) Lucky Dog uses?

Sorry, I don't. I'll try to find out, but could take me a while.

I think Road Food is having an event in New Orleans very soon? Perhaps one of the members in attendance could find out for you?

I do know besides a hot dog, they have other "dogs" including a creole sausage and a smoked sausage.

Amazing! They seem to have a sort of website now:
http://www.luckydogs.us/

Their contact info:
517 Gravier Street
New Orleans, LA 70130
Phone: 504-524-6010
Fax: 504-529-3067
E-Mail: info@luckydogs.us

but I didn't see any info on brand used...

Still looking - all the wagon says is 1/4 pound all meat - so far still mystery meat.

Unfortunately not. :-(

I am currently living in exile and no immediate plans for a visit - trying to get ready for Hawaii. Next scheduled NOLA visit is toward the end of June.

co-sign on lucky dogs being best at 3 a.m. after a night of drinking.  In the light of day, they are not quite as good.
