Our Stop At Super Duper Weenie..with Pictures - Tue, 03/23/10 3:32 PM

On our recent trip to Cambridge, Mass, we finally got to stop at Super Duper Weenie in Fairfield Connecticut to give the hot dogs a try.

Well,it sure didn't disappoint...the place is small and very roadfood....but on a sunday afternoon, the place was jammed...and a small room with picnic tables where you get to sit and eat was crowded(apparently they do a steady take out business!

It was so busy, you have to wait for a parking spot.....

It took a while to place our order...and about a 10 minute wait to get our dogs, home cut french fries and drinks.Everything is homemade here...all relishes, chili etc...and all delicious!!
Here's a great photo of my Dixie dog...homemade slaw and chili and all....this was great!!!

We also had a great New York dog...check it out.....you can also see those great homemade fries in the picture......

The last variety dog we sampled was a very tasty Chicago Dog......

Still, even looking at these pictures again...it's so hard to decide my favorite...even after two of those Dixie dogs...we missed so many types, I wish they had a sampler.......next time we'll try the rest...

It's so easy to find the place...Exit 24 on I95 in Fairfield Conn. We'll be back, Those of you lucky enough to have  made the pilgimage, what did you think? What was your favorite dog??

This is only the second time I've tried to post pictures...hope you enjoyed viewing them as much as I enjoyed eating them...

Lee,

I enjoyed looking at the pictures, but I am sure you enjoyed eating them more than I enjoyed looking at them.  Wish I had a few to eat!  Thanks for sharing a great adventure.

OMG!!!.....LTB took photos in a restaurant!!!

See what a mess the NY dog is?  That's what I experienced....too generous with the wet toppings....and then wrapping them up...everything turns into a gooey mess.

I'd go back, though.

What did you think of the sausage itself?

Broke a piece off under all the topping...not bad....anyone (John Fox?) know what dog they use?

Yes, they are very generous with their toppings...somehow, howefer it all comes together in a tasty, if somewhat messy package!!!.....and yes, MiamiDon, they can teach an old dog new tricks....pictures courtesy of my teenage son's help!!!!

Lee,

Nice report and pictures! SDW uses a Hummel's natural casing beef and pork frank. It is atypical of the German style in that it contains a good amount of garlic and paprika. It also has a tangy flavor (vinegar or mustard?) that I've detected in some Connecticut dogs and Kohler's from New Jersey.

I've been to SDW several times, but it was before they switched to Hummel. They used a frank from Miller's Provision, which was very similar to what you get at Galloping Hill Inn in Union, N.J. Miller's went out of business. Gary, the owner, got the recipe from the Miller family and had it produced for him by someone else. Then they stopped making it. Finally he switched to Hummels. It's a fine dog (I've had it many times in Connecticut) but the Miller's dog was better. Good on it's own, and ok with the homemade toppings.

I've had the dog with mustard most of the time. The other times I enjoyed their New Englander.

Their version of a Chicago dog is not authentic. They use a dog with pork (only all beef for a true Chi Town dog), split and griddle it (should be steamed or prepared in water) and top it with junk that you don't find on a true Chicago dog. Most don't put lettuce on theirs. And they use neon green relish rather than the brown salsa type stuff pictured.

The Dixie Dog and the homemade fries look pretty good but the New York and Chicago dogs just seem too messy. Like the hot dog is there to prop up the toppings. But like you said, it all tastes pretty good and that's what counts.

What's the New York dog topped with?

Here's their  menu and a link to their website.....They've also just added a new dog...a Cinncinati dog...not sure what was on that one.....maybe someone out there knows!

That was my reaction too. The dog & toppings were of good quality, but way too much goop on there

That is what happens when dogs are wrapped in wax paper, everything gets smashed!
They would look much better on a paper plate or in a 4# tray.

There cinci dog is missing one thing. Mustard. I realise they always do there own twist tho. For me a cinci dog needs that bit of twang that mustard gives it.

Hey LTB, Nice to see you still have your camera.

When I was at SDW I sat at the counter, so my dogs were not wrapped.  When you have the owner preparing every dog, and making every topping in house, you know the meal is going to be good.

Thanks for the report.
