Wally,

I do recall that We had at least one snow day out of school AFTER Spring Break each of the years I was teaching in Northern Oneida County (1968-72) So MAYBE Spring has Sprung along the St Lawrence River...but the Lake Effect Snow is NOT Over !!

We never dared to plant our veggie garden til Memorial Day Weekend !

AHHhhh --- that is good news!

That means that the wild ramps and the fiddlehead ferns will be sprouting on our farm in Carthage, New York (just outside of Watertown).

I guess that I and my wife will have to drive up, weekend after next, and harvest a passel of each to make a couple dozen jars of pickled ramps and a few pounds of fiddlehead fern (frozen and then vacuum-packed for use during the upcoming summer season).

Our leased farm's caretakers will be glad to see us, I'm sure, and will have a ton of stories about their winter adventures in Upstate New York --- LOL!

Thanks for the 'heads-up', wallhd

Spring hasn't arrived in this part of the north country! Still plenty of snow on the ground but thawing quickly. We are still getting snow mixed with rain showers here.

However, I have noticed an increase in business since the clocks moved ahead for DST.  My dinner rush starts later.  Here in Alaska we are already enjoying 13.5 hours of daylight and gaining over 5 minutes per day until the summer equinox. About 20 hours of either daylight or twilight! It's great for golfing as the links are open almost 24 hours. LOL.

To elaborate just a bit:

I have been to Clare's many times during March and April when it had been necsassary to plow the parking lot !

Insofar as the "actual" arrival of spring, perhaps Flag Day (June 14th) would be more accurate, climate-wise at least.

Except for onions sets and maybe peas, it isn't safe to plant much out doors before the aforementioned Memorial Day.

And just to set the record straight for all of you "from away": Our part of the North Country is adjacent to Lake Champlain. And there isn't much danger of a heat wave yet as the temperature of the lake water has been pretty steady at 36 deg. F for the past 7 days.

In spite of it all though, Clare's is open.
