Stroud's - Sun, 04/4/10 12:08 AM

We went to the new(ish) Stroud's in Fairway, KS for dinner tonight. I really enjoyed it. The chicken livers for an appitizer were some of the best I've ever had, and the fried chicken was excellent. It had a very light batter, not too crispy, and was pabn fried.

The green beans were like we used to get for dinner at every Masonic dinner I've ever eaten at, with bits of bacon in them and my wife said the mashed potatoes were great (I don't like potatoes). She also said the cinnamon rolls were good. We'll go back.

I'm really glad to see this positive review.  I'm going to Kansas City in a couple of weeks for a conference, and the Fairway location is much more convenient for me this time than the one at Oak Ridge Road (which is where I've gone in the past).  I really like the Oak Ridge Road location, but I am probably not going to have time to go there this trip.  So it's great to know that the Fairway location didn't disappoint.  Thanks!

Oh, thanks!  I was actually planning to go for lunch on Thursday.  Rats!

Do you know whether the Oak Ridge location is still serving lunch on Fridays?

still open for lunch on Friday, Saturday, & Sunday,

I'm very disappointed they're closed for lunch, that's when I usually went, still outstanding food, usually get the chicken fried steak for lunch, (regular chicken takes too long).

Have to just go on Fridays now.

Are they still serving deep-fried chicken gizzards?

Yep. You can order livers or gizzards or a combo of the two that Stroud's calls a "mixup".

Yeah, they had gizzards last weekend, but I prefer livers.

A week ago tonight, we ate at the Fairway location for the first time.  Portions are very large - the sides guarantee that you won't leave hungry.  For an additonal $8.95 - one may split and entree with salad and vegetables for both diners.  We still couldn't eat it all.  Service was excellent.  The thirty minute wait (according to the hostess) turned out to be eight minutes.  Chicken was very tasty, green beans were quite good (but cooked more than we care for), the mashed potatoes and gravy were - well, they were mashed potatoes and gravy.  The cinnamon rolls were fantastic - actually, they were even better than the chicken (or perhaps more of a surprise).

Just missed you! We ate there last Wednesday. We had tried on a Thursday, June 16, but the wait was over 45 minutes. On the 29th there was no line.

I ordered a "half order" of gizzards. There were still so many that I ate until I was the last one eating and still had enough to take home for breakfast the next morning.

I like the cottage fries.

I agree.  I go there primarily for the chicken, but the cottage fries were an expected treat.

I love the chicken noodle soup, too.

In fact, everything's good at the Strouds in Fairway!

Only problem -- much too much food if you're dining alone, as I was.  I set aside the cinnamon rolls to take home to my spouse.

Travel hint for out-of-towners:  if you are staying in the Country Club Plaza area, the drive to Fairway is short, and, in my opinion, is much easier to find and  to get to than the Oak Ridge Manor location.

And it's also a straightforward drive from Fairway to the Kansas City airport, in case your trip to Strouds is your last stop, as it was mine.

I sometimes forget just how much food you get at Stroud's. My stepdaughter was in town Sunday and wanted Stroud's fried chicken.

She didn't want to take the leftovers with her, so we have the leftovers from three people. Spouse and I had Strouds for breakfast yesterday (chicken for me, cinnamon rolls for her) yesterday, supper last night, and my breakfast again this morning. We still have food left over.
