I could see a Jewish Deli not serving Salami, If it was an Italian Deli thats another thing. As long as the Jewish Deli still tells you to " Shut up and eat it,You'll like it" then everything is fine.........Billyb

A Jewish delicatessen without salami is like a junkyard without a dog. And I don't believe a waiter in a delicatessen has said anything like that since the early '50s.

Way back in the last century I worked at a place called the Little Apple; It was run by 2 guys from NYC and they claimed that it was a genuine NY deli experience in Mpls..... Ha! We were told to be "Rude, in a nice way" IE: What the hell do you want now..., Get out, You've been here long enough....Etc. Oddly, the place didn't last very long. Damn good Kosher salami though!

There were still some cranky old waiters at the 2nd Avenue deli well into the late 80's. I got yelled at while on a date because I hadn't figured out what I wanted quick enough.

Yeah, but that doesn't count. You're always getting yelled at by waitstaff.

wanderingjew Yeah, but that doesn't count. You're always getting yelled at by waitstaff. You could have ended that sentence after the word "at".

Yelled at? Me? Listen, today no one was yelling at me. I caught 11 smallmouth bass and four bluegills today. The largest smallie was about two pounds. So, if anyone wants to go fishing, all the smallmouths and the bluegills are waiting in the river for the next angler who wants to try.

I remember eating at Ratner's in NYC in about 1966. I was alone and feeling sort of down so I ordered noodles and cheese and chocolate cream pie. The waiter sat down with me and talked about how unhealthy the order was. He was very kind and also very right but I ate it anyway (and loved it)!
