A roadfood tour of northwest Indiana, July 2010 - Fri, 04/30/10 6:32 AM
0

Hear ye, hear ye! Big announcement!...

... Actually, not so big. I'm just going to prove that some people can't quit while they're ahead by putting together another Chicagoland Roadfood tour, this time of places in northwest Indiana along the IL / IN state line. The date will be Saturday, July 31st, and this date is carved in stone as an out-of-town Roadfooder has already booked his flight to the Windy City. We'll be stuffing our faces at four places ( three of them local mini-chains ) that are favorites of mine and that I feel are Roadfood-worthy: Schoop's ( hamburgers ), BuffaLouie's ( wings ), Zel's ( roast beef sandwiches ) and the non-chain Jalapeno's ( Mexican ). The day will conclude with homemade ice cream at Cunis, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor that was very popular with the attendees of last year's tour. Be there or be square somewhere else.

What, no Gary, Indiana pizzerias?

Unfortunately for me I already have plans for that day and won't be able to participate.

I vote for adding on Miner Dunn.....
those were wonderful burgers....

In fact they were REAL Hamburgers...

I even loved the fries, and I'm not much of a fry girl, but these were great! Fresh cut, and crispy!

and they even came with a mini-dessert of kind of an orange-vanilla sherbet- like a creamsicle- really wonderful and refreshing!

Elaine, I do like the burgers at Miner Dunn, although not near as much as Schoop's, but do you think folks could handle six stops in one day? Especially when two of them are burgers? I'm game if everyone else is, but it really seems like overkill. Feedback please...

Put Mr. Maki and I down as a tentative yes.  I'm totally unfamiliar with NW Indiana, so whatever other people choose, I'm good with.

I'm also okay with two burger stops, as long as we're splitting them in half.

Bob,

Unless I decide to take a Saturday night off from work, the Roadhouses will probably need to opt out on this one.  Sundays are always best for us, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Besides, by the time this tour rolls around I will have seen buffetbuster twice three times (forgot he'll be a guest at Smoke Day this year) this summer and frankly, that's just about enough (see you at Sokolowski's in May, bb.  I already called ahead and spoke to Michael Sokolowski, so they're expecting us.).

At this point, there is a possibility that I might be able to join the rest of you for this tour.  The family my son married into celebrates everyone's birthdays with Saturday get-togethers, and I am always included.  It is pretty much going to depend on whether the person whose birthday is July 25 (who just happens to be my daughter-in-law) wants to celebrate her birthday on July 24 or July 31.  One thing that complicates this a little bit right now is that they just (two days ago) had a 10 lb. baby boy.

ChiTownDiner:

To do that, I am sure I would have to bring his parents along too, and my son is a pretty big eater.  (His wife doesn't do too bad herself, though she doesn't show it, or at least she didn't before she was pregnant.)

Well, as I said originally, I am going to have to wait and see how this all plays out.   If it turns out to be the day my daughter-in-law wants to celebrate her birthday, there is no way I could bring Jami's whole family along (the ones that have the birthday get-togethers) because including them would make a total of 12 or 13 people, and I don't want to have to get a bus.

Bob,

I would love to take part in this tour, both for the food and for the company, but won't be attending.  However, I will be making another weeklong business trip to NW Indiana the week of June 12 and hope that we can hit a few places in the evenings that week.  It's nice to have Portillo's across the street from the hotel in Merrillville, but I know there are some better Italian beef places that we have talked about.

Mrs. MFL and I found Schoop's by accident and it was love at first bite.
Miner Dunn looks like my kind of hamburger too.
We're pretty busy this summer but we'll see.
There isn't someway to bypass that large city between there and Milwaukee is there?
Hmm, didn't think so.

I-294.  It'll take you right into NW Indiana.

If you're willing to pay the tolls you can circumvent the traffic.

Bob, thanks for the "heads up." I travel a lot during the summer, but if I'm in the area, I'll definitely go. I've driven by a Schoops in NW Indiana, and thought I should try it someday.... And that Miner Dunn burger does look great. If I get to participate in this outing, I may also have to make a stop at the Calumet Fisheries for some fried oysters (while I'm in the "neighborhood"....).

Can't commit to this right now, put me in for a tentative yes. I may take an extra day & go back to Popolano's.

I'd sure like to make this. (cross-contamination alert) I love geocaching and I haven't found any caches in Indiana yet. Oh, I suppose seeing you guys and exploring new cities and eating lots of good food is OK too . I'll have to see how my moola stash is at that time since I'd probably want to stay the weekend.

This sounds like a great tour.

I have to say the we are iffy on this one because of the date.
The twins are definitely at Boy Scout camp Ma Ka Ja Wan this weekend.
So we may do one of several things
we might  GASP
go on an actual vacation
go to visit them at camp since it's an OA call out weekend and one of them might get called out
or we could join you-
so don't cout us in or out-for now....

It's like you know what I'm going to ask, before I ask it. At least I know not to wear any Cubbies gear on this trip.

Remember that idea I had last year...ABE*...for a girls nite to check out that costume shop & etc? Maybe this year. I won't be training anyone (cross your fingers) at that time. If I ask off for it now I bet I could get it. SHRAMP. That way I can be in Chitown early enough to begin the day on time, not like last year.

*I put your real name, had to go & change it.

Man, you guys are killin' me here.  Calumet Fisheries, Gertie's, Schoop's...I really want to make this one but I just don't think it will be in the cards.

Oh well, at least two members of the Roadhouse clan will represent on this tour.  Who knows, maybe Mrs. Roadhouse will join her daughter and new son-in-law.

While digging around for info I found this thread with pics of a Schoops Burger and Zel's Chili Cheese Fries. That could really hit the spot right about now!

Since I have nothing better to do this afternoon, I thought I'd post pictures of the restaurants that we'll be visiting on this tour in July. Our first stop will be the Chicago Heights IL location of Schoop's Hamburgers. Schoop's is primarily a NW Indiana chain, but this particular one is somewhat larger than most and better suited for a group.

Stop #2 will be BuffaLouie's in Munster IN. Or is it Highland? The place is located right on the dividing line, and I forget which side it's on. Anyway, this mini-chain has only three locations; the other two are in Valparaiso and Bloomington IN.

Our third stop will be Zel's Roast Beef in Highland. This mini-chain has five locations, all in NW Indiana.

Our last meal of the day will be at Jalapeno's, a non-chain restaurant that has the best Mexican food that I've found. Since this place is right next door to Zel's, I imagine that we'll need a place where we can kill time and do some necessary digesting before hitting Jalapeno's. I do have something in mind and I'll let you know once I've checked it out.

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but I have to agree with CTD.

Do you have links for these places, Puff Bobby, so I can check out the menus? I have to make a plan before I can do a day like this. Also do you know if Cunis is going to have their blueberry ice cream at that time?

Schoop's Menu
Buffalouies (menu is a PDF download)
Zels menu (although not an official Zel's site, so who knows how accurate it is)
Jalapenos menu

I don't think I've ever had blueberry ice cream! Sounds fantastic, if it really tastes blueberry-ee ( or blueberry-ish? )

cjucoder, you beat me to it. I just dug up those four sites and was getting ready to post them; thanks for taking care of it. I plan on getting over to Cunis this week for one of their terrific chocolate sundaes, and I'll try to remember to ask about the blueberry ice cream. As far as the ruffage thing is concerned, Doctor Bob recommends a tall glass of Metamucil before starting our Roadfood tour.

No problem, I was looking for them anyway. I love reading menus and almost always try to find them online before going somewhere.

Is anyone else annoyed with so many restaurants having their menu on a .pdf? It takes acrobat forever to launch on my slow laptop. I should look for a better reader. Oh well.

OR, order salads at some of the stops! Nah. Sorry for the blasphemy. I did think I saw some sides of beans!

A really good salad is a wonderful thing. Even a dyed-in-the-wool carnivore like me has one occasionally. Who knows, I might even have one this year.

Your coming to Indiana and no pork tenderloin??  We are known for inventing the sandwich here in Indiana.  Also if you are in northern Indiana you need to try Wings.  I've had them all over and nothing compares to them.

All of the restaurants that we're visiting are within a few miles of the IL /IN state line, and this part of the Hoosier State is not BPT territory. In fact, Schoop's is the only place in NW Indiana serving a pork tenderloin that I'm aware of; theirs is pretty decent but it's certainly not what the chain is known for. And as far as hot wings are concerned, that's the reason that we're going to BuffaLouie's. Their wings are, IMO, the best in the area.

Just as I said I would, I went to Cunis last week for one of their great chocolate sundaes, and while there I asked if their homemade blueberry ice cream would be available when we visit in late July. I'm happy to say that the answer was yes, and that also applies to the peach ice cream that was so popular with tour attendees last summer.

AMAZING Peach!  Sorry I'm missing this one.  Maybe someone from my family will be thoughtful enough to bring along a cooler and score a pint or two for me.

I'm going to have to try to save room for Cunis at the end.  Last time I couldn't muster more than a bite or two of that wonderful peach.

Bob, Mr. Maki and I had to go out to Naperville yesterday for a non-food related errand and were trying to find a Roadfood-y place to eat.  We were going to go to a sandwich shop we passed on the way to our destination, when we remembered to check our GPS to see if there was any places we'd saved as "favorites"- the favorites list in order of distance relative to where you are, so Country House in Clarendon Hills from last year's tour you took us on came up first.  Boy, were we glad it did.  Their special last night was a garlic burger.  It was so good, served on garlic bread, probably with additional garlic in the beef.

I hope this tour results in a few favorites, too- I'm sure it will!

As a Country House regular...I have never seen the Garlic Burger!  That one sounds really good.  The day I visited last year's tour, they had a fantastic Beef Stoghanoff that was memorable!  I call all the time on that one and have not hit the ticket!

Great system for remembering hot spots!  You newlyweds have it all together!

This Roadfood tour is only a month away, so I thought that I'd bump it and ask for feedback as to who plans to attend. If you're currently planning to join in on our day of face-stuffing, please let me know as soon as you can.  Thanks.

Dang it, I'm going to miss it by two days.....I'm loading up the family truckster for the drive from Plano, TX to Traverse City, MI on July 29.

But, I really do appreciate the suggestions of Zels and Schoops.  We'll be stopping at those places on the way up.

Sorry that you can't join us, Jim, but I hope that you enjoy your meals at Schoop's and Zel's. They're both very good, especially Schoop's.

Mr. Maki and I plan on being there.  Not sure about our friend who lives in NW Indiana- she's preparing to move and she's a *cough*vegetarian*cough, so I'm not sure how much she'd eat anyway.

Now playing at a theater or drive-in near you...

        "BUMP - THE MOTION PICTURE"

Seriously, the NW Indiana tour is just a few weeks away, and I'd really like an idea of how many bodies to expect. I already know of a few who can't make it; if you do plan on attending, please let me know ASAP. Thanks.
