Best Opening Line to a Song - Thu, 07/1/10 2:37 PM
I just listened to Sunday Morning Coming Down written by Kris Kristofferson. Performed by Johnny Cash and consider it one of the best what are your favorites?...Russ

Well I woke up Sunday morning,
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.

Go on home yer mudder's callin',
Yer fadder just fell in da garbage can.
Go on home yer mudder's callin',
They come to collect yer old man.

This is the opening to "Aqualung" by the British group Jethro Tull...

Sitting on a park bench
Eyeing little girls with bad intent
Snots running down his nose
Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes
Hey Aqualung

I always enjoy upbeat lyrics...

The beast in me
Is caged by frail and fragile bonds
Restless by day
And by night, rants and rages at the stars
God help, the beast in me

I'm wondering where you are tonight.
I'm wondering if you are alright.
I wonder if you think of me
In my misery.

Yes. When Sinatra sings it. I'm totally familiar with the King & I, but I have sentimental reasons for Sinatra's version.

It was the third of June
another sleepy, dusty delta day

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso,
I fell in love with a Mexican girl

Great one. Forget "best opening line in a song" and think "best opening

sound in a song" and this would surely be in the running:

PIZZA PIE
(Norman Fox)
NORMAN FOX & THE ROB ROYS (Capitol 4128, 1959)
Well, we were standing on the sidewalk
Just admiring the view
And we thought that we would go down down
And find something to do
And we saw this place upon the corner
And it looked real swell
So we opened the door, we went inside
This is what we yelled
Now pizza pie-i-i-i-i-i-i-i
Hey pizza pie

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me: won't see another one
And then they sang a song
The rare old mountain dew
I turned my face away and dreamed about you

She really knows how to hurt
So I guess I'm lucky I'm outta the clutches
I can't forget good she looks

And for those who now can't stand not remembering the rest of that Marty Robbins song:

Once you told me long ago
To the prom with me you'd go
Now you've changed your mind it seems
Someone else will hold my dreams
A white sports coat and a pink carnation
I'm in a blue blue mood.
I'm all dressed up for the dance
I'm all alone in romance
Once you told me long ago
To the prom with me you'd go
Now you've changed your mind it seems
Someone else will hold my dreams
A white sports coat and a pink carnation
I'm in a blue blue mood.

And in a similar cadence:

Who you been lovin' since I been gone?
A long tall man with a red coat on.
Good-for-nothing-baby you've been doing me wrong.
Who you been lovin' since I been gone?
Who you been lovin' since I been gone?

There was a boy,
a very strange enchanted boy,
they say he wandered very far, very far, over land and sea,
a little shy,
and sad of eye,
but very wise was he

And then one day,
One magic day he came my way.
We spoke of many things,
Fools and kings
This he said to me ....

 Ah, Nature Boy. Nat Cole.

Baby I don't know
what I think of us
Won't be here tomorrow
I get so mixed up
It's a shame that we're not living in the country
A place that I once seen before
In a book you've always loved, but never showed me
You know I never lost before

About 150 years ago I was flying TWA from New York to Dallas while returning from leave and we were diverted to Midland-Odessa because of weather. Among the passengers aboard was the Nat "King" Cole Trio. They had a date in Dallas -- at the Adolphus, if memory serves. When it appeared that we'd be stuck there for several hours, The Nat "King" Cole Trio performed in the airport bar for over two hours, playing what they felt like and taking requests. That was a most wonderful experience. What a gracious man he was.

Oh, and Sweet Lorraine was one of the numbers. So were Nature Boy and Mona Lisa

"Oh You can say that I'm the one curly fry in the box of a regular
Messing with the flavor, oh the flavor that you savor
Saving me for last, but you better not eat me at all
Living in a fastfood bag making friends with the ketchup and salt
People say that I'm crazy for not moving on to better things
Instead of sitting around trash talking with the onion rings
