If any of you happen to be traveling thru the Hudson Valley and you like simple inexpensive and very drinkable wines, you should make time to stop at one or more of our 25 or so local wineries. A listing of these places can be found at "Uncork New York". 

The whites; chardonnay, reisling, and various blends are pretty good at just about all of the local wineries. Prices are mostly in the less than  $15 range. In general, the wines made from French-American hybrid grapes, and from native American grapes are not that good, but they are worth sampling if they are offered in a tasting room. You should ask if the grapes are estate grown - a lot of wine is made around here from grapes from the Finger Lakes, Long Island, and even California. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but what's the point of going to a local winery to buy wine made from grapes that are not locally grown - even when the wine produced is pretty good, which is the case with several that I've tasted recently. A few producers are specializing in sweet dessert wines - most  of these are delicious.

 Thanks for the tip John. There are several wineries starting up here in Alaska too. Some of the offerings are very good but most need a little tweaking. We also get blended wines from grapes other than local but I will forgive that for a good product and inexpensive wine.

In one of the suburbs of Metro-Lanesville, Indiana is the Turtle-Run Winery.  Since my sensitive Palate can't tell the difference between Welch's and Giant Value Grape Juice, I don't know if the liquid they bottle has any real quality or not.

A bit further away, In Floyd Knobs, Indiana  at the Huber Family Farm Restaurant (and Winery), one can find Wine made from various local fruits , such as Apple, Pear, Berries, and of course GRAPES of various colors. In many cases these Wines are bottled in attractive packaging , making them great gifts representing the newly emerging Winery Industry in Souther Indiana.

We may not be the Napa Valley, or even the Finger Lakes of New York, but we can raise our pinkies with the rest of you! Not every beverage in the Ohio Valley comes from Wally World in a 5 Liter Plastic Bag !

If they can grow grapes and make wine in Minnesota they can anywhere.

Actually, in my lifetime, the growth of wine has been spectacular. It used to be if there were wines outside California they were usually modified fruit wines and overly sweet and syrupy. Now I can find wines all over the country that are actually very good.

  Most of the wine that I drink comes from my Father in Law. He makes it from whatever is ripe at the time.

  My wife said that they got a little (read: a lot) tipsy while camping last week.  Too bad I had to work

  I have tried his Raspberry, Peach, Nectarine, Strawberry, Blueberry, and Dandelion wines and all have been very good but strong. Bordering on brandy. The beer he makes is also very good!!!.

Spent a week in the Finger Lakes. First time I didn't actually go to a winery - but I did hit local wine shops and visited the local wineries that way.

This year, we were on Honeoye Lake. Next year, we're either doing Keuka, Seneca, Cayuga or heading to Adirondaks. I haven't vacationed in central Adirondaks since my backpacking days.

Scorereader - my fiance and i are looking forward to honeymooning in the Finger Lakes next year, both for the fishing (salmon and lake trout), and for the Bully Hill and Four Chimmneys wineries. Four Chimmneys is an organic vineyard, and their "Eye of the Bee" white wine is a taste of heaven...
