Louie Mueller's , Taylor, TX - Sat, 10/23/10 9:54 AM

I recently visited the Austin area and visited Louie Mueller's. Absolutely fantastic! I've read about and seen the giants of Texas BBQ here and on TV.I didn't have the time to visit Lockhart and try Smitty's and Kruez so I have no comparison but if they are better, then I'll be shocked. I had the moist brisket and a giant beef rib. Unfortunately, the beef sausage was not available on the day I was there. The brisket was freshly cut before my eyes and was amazing. The beef rib was gigantic. I'll upload a picture later. I had a side of German Potato salad and a Lone Star beer to finish one of the best meals I've ever had.

Mueller's is at the top my All-Time BBQ list.  Texas has a number of places that are close, but not equal !

I agree with Al.  You experienced the best - ignore what the TV food channels tell you.

Which is obvious based on this photo!

I'm so happy to hear that Louie Muller is back on track after the owner died and the manager (and pit boss) left to start his own restaurant. I'd heard mixed reviews after those events took place and I was worried I'd lost my most favorite BBQ joint.
Many thanks for the update!

Glad to hear the place is back on track. I ate at the place a couple days before Mr. mueller died and i wonder if i was the last roadfooder to see him alive. Hope the place will keep up the quality.

We recently spoke with Wayne Mueller, who now is running the place, and he confirmed that he is going to return to the New Orleans Roadfood Festival in 2011 (March 26 & 27!), hauling his huge and spectacular mobile smoke pit, but this time with more personnel, so the lines to get his fantastic food won't be quite as long as they were in 2010.

I feel a great attachment to the old Gym building even though it seems to be many years between our visits. I love finding my smokey browned business card still on the wall from 1994, and again in 97 or 98, then a cleaner card posted with the Glee-Club visit in 2007.

Dale, That Rib filled me, then the bone itself kept McDuff happy for hours after we left Taylor. Somewhere in the Texas Prairie there is a remanent slowly fossilizing to confound future scientists about how it got where it was found !

I went back in 1986, and I still consider the lunch I had on my visit there to be the best BBQ brisket I have ever had.  Sadly, all others fail by comparison.

Finding consistently meaty beef ribs these days, for serving as a platter or a combo, is nearly impossible, trust me, I've had to send back many cases lately, to the point I'm dropping them off the menu. Does anyone know if they raise their own beef?

As I'm in Texas, I haven't a clue where you could find them in Md. However, I'd certainly give Costco or Sam's a try for starters.
We have many cattle ranches in Texas raising both organic grass fed and, regular grain finished beef. You might make some inquiries if you are looking for large amounts of meat for restaurant purposes. I'd give it a try if I were you.

Love Mueller's.  I will be back there at the end of this month and can't wait to get another beef short rib.

I don't believe the picture of Al munching on that rib is a short rib, it's the rib attached to the Ribeye, with enough of the Ribeye left on to make a meal, around here they cut almost all the meat off the rib bones, it's a joke!
