[Rant] Lipton sucks - Sat, 10/23/10 8:35 PM

I used to love lipton iced tea,FOR 30+ YEARS I DRANK IT...
All of a sudden they changed the recipe adding an ingredient: "MALTODEXTRIN" and it tastes like crap!! (Too sweet)

AND THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO PUT "SAME GREAT TASTE" ON THE CONTAINER!!
Whenever a company changes thier design on a can,IT ALMOST ALWAYS IS NOT THE SAME TASTE!! (Thru my experiences)
I emailed them a weeks days ago and asked them to PLEASE REMOVE "MALTODEXTRIN" (Which is an artifical sweetener made for DIET PRODUCTS) from thie REG ICED TEA and they emailed me back saying this:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts concerning Lipton.
Many factors are considered during product development, such as taste, texture, nutritional value, the ability to retain flavor and quality, as well as consumer convenience in use and preparation. Unilever uses only those ingredients needed to provide the desired flavor, appearance, consistency and nutritional value to its food products, and then to maintain those qualities during storage and use.

In order to produce good-tasting foods, we also make use of the latest research to select ingredients that provide those qualities. Our research staff continues to review existing products and develop new ones, and this ongoing program provides our consumers with products of only the highest quality and value.

Consumer comments are important to us, and are evaluated on a regular basis. We will forward your message to the appropriate staff.
Sincerely,
Your friends at Lipton
FUNNY HOW THIER ICED TEA DIDNT EVER HAVE AN ARTIFICAL SWEETENER IN IT,AND IT TASTED WONDERFUL!!
Why do companies me$$ with success AND LIE ABOUT IT??
Ill tell you why, cause there are ALOT OF PEOPLE THEY CAN WALK ALL OVER SPEWING THESE LIES W/NO QUESTIONS!! (These are the people that ultimatly allow these pricks to keep doing this! (Mars, hersheys, etc))

Doesn't canned lipton have that fake lemon flavor?   I'm not sure how you'ved stood to drink it for 30 years, I've always thought Lipton was horrible...   even without lemon.   Tea should NEVER have lemon in it, well unless it's 1/2 lemonade (Arnold Palmer).

Prefer to brew myself using Red Rose tea, or whatever's cheapest.

I dunno...

But i do know that MALTODEXTRIN is for DIET PRODUCTS!! (Or low calorie) IT IS NOT NEEDED IN A NON-DIET DRINK THAT HAS SUGAR!!

Why are you sticking with the powdered stuff? When you could have this?

Sorry for posting a link, but seriously. Powdered Iced tea? What is next, the Olive Garden????

They're not the only company that does this. Celestial Seasonings makes them, too, I know. If you like the tea strong, just brew it overnight. If you like a lemon in there, slice up a lemon, freeze the slices, and put it at the bottom of the glass before you pour the tea in.

I was scarred a child by a babysitter who had gallons of the stuff you're describing around the house. She is the reason I don't like sweetened iced tea, powdered or otherwise. I don't even like lemon in it half the time because of her & those big containers of the Powder N Scoop.

Reformulations frustrate me, too, and they tend to be inferior to the original product.  Twenty years ago, Snapple tea was so good I'd buy it by the case (nearly as good as my mother's).  Now it doesn't even taste like tea, and I won't touch it.

I used to love Hellmann's (Best Foods) mayo.  Several years ago, it was reformulated, and it sucks.  The #2 ingredient is no longer eggs, it's WATER.  So I switched to JFG Mayonnaise; the #2 ingrdient is pure egg yolks, which is most unusual for a supermarket mayo.

There are countless examples, and I'm with you.  Leave a successful product alone and don't try to fool the consumer.  I won't even go into the Coke-Pepsi switch to yucky corn syrup.

I have never cared for instant iced tea.My Mom always brewed her own and thats what I do.No lemon or sugar. The only exception to that rule is my cousins home brewed sweet tea.
Mellow-didnt realize that about Hellmans-no wonder I need so much more on a blt! I wonder about Dukes...

Duke's is excellent, but JFG is my favorite sandwich mayo.

By the way, I think Duke's is the thickest mayo on the market, and JFG is probably the zestiest.

I switched to Duke's some time ago, and won't go back.

As for tea, if I'm bringing it home from the supermarket, I'm bringing home Milo's or nothin'.

Yes, when it comes to prepared tea, Milo's may well be the best anywhere.

Lipton tea bags make for good iced tea. I use 7-10 bags with my Mr. Coffee Brand Iced Tea Brewer - and it comes out great.

I've never cared for Lipton Tea, in any formulation.

Growing up, my mom always made iced tea with Tetley Tea -- several tea bags in a tea pot to which boiling water was added, then after it was brewed to the stage she wanted, the tea was placed in a big ceramic iced tea pitcher, and ice cubes added to that.  No sugar, no lemon.

Nowadays, we use loose tea -- usually English or Scottish breakfast tea -- and "brew" it overnight in the refrigerator in a pitcher of cold water.

Now that you mention it, when I was growing up, my mother used a wonderful brand called Tender Leaf.  Fabulous, smooth tea.  Now it's distributed to restaurants and no longer available in stores.

More lies!! - Tue, 04/5/11 12:54 AM
0
I got an email back from Lipton today and they said this

Hello
Thank you for writing us regarding Lipton Natural Lemon Iced Tea .

All the labels for Lipton Iced Tea mixes have been redesigned and ingredient declarations and nutritionals were reviewed and updated. The formulas didn't change but some nutritionals and ingredient declarations have changed slightly. Maltodextrin was one of the ingredients that wasn't declared before but it needs to be declared now because it is the only source of corn (an allergen) in the ingredient declaration.

Maltodexterin offers a anti-bulking agent there fore keeping the instant tea granulars from clumping and giving a less than satisfactory texture.

THEY ARE TRYING TO INSULT MY TASTE BUDS!!!!!!!!!!!
I drank this crap for 30 YEARS..... IT DID NOT HAVE THIS GARBAGE IN IT!! (The reg instant mix) THE FIRST CAN I TASTED AFTER THEY REDESIGNED THE CAN THAT HAD "MALTODEXTRIN" ON THE INGREDIENTS I COULD TASTE!! (Im not a blasted moron!!!!)

Im wondering if i could ask a favour of everyone reading this?
Could you please send LIPTON some feedback on thier REG ICED TEA and tell them it doesnt taste good with Maltodextrin in it and for years it was WONDERFULL WITHOUT IT! (Or make up some feedback about it)

Here is the address
https://ssl.unilever.com/liptont.com/contact_us/contact_us.aspx

I know it wont help you but IT MIGHT HELP ME (If enough people email them about it)

Im wondering if anything can be done to them FOR NOT LISTING MALTODEXTRIN ON THIER WEBSITE!! (In the REG instant mix) they are not disclosing and if someone orders it from them,THEY WONT KNOW IT NOW HAS THIS CRAP UNTIL THEY HAVE IT!!

I asked them if i could please order some from them WITHOUT MALTODEXTRIN IN IT (As its not listed on the site) and they didnt respond back :(

Food is under attack and we must stick together :)

Thank you all......

My only advice is if you dont like it, dont drink it. Make your own-much cheaper.I guess I am of a generation that doesnt buy the premade stuff-hell, I rarely drink soda.

For brewing, the only choice is Luzianne.

For bottled, I think Peak is pretty good.

Dude111: I know it's not the kind of help you asked for, but why not try a store brand? If you hold the containers up next to each other, you can compare ingredients & nutritionals.

Do you remember when Snapple sold clear sodas in flavors like root beer?

Also, Pepsi has come back with their original formula. It's called Pepsi Throwback & is fabulous.

Yes, Stricken, I definitely remember those Snapple flavors.  As a side note, I'd love to buy their Grape Ade locally, but it's not sold anywhere in the area.  It's my 2nd favorite grape drink after Knudsen Grape Spritzer (bottles), which I can fortunately find nearby.  You're right about the Pepsi Throwback.  Just bought 3 cartons.  Interestingly, Wal-Mart here has started carrying Mexican Coke, with the original cane sugar formula.  I'm glad, too, because I recently stopped at a store inquiring about "Mexican Coke", and the manager nearly called the police.  You should have seen the look of outrage on her face.  She thought I was referring to something else!

I thought it was interesting that nowhere in their reply to you did they mention anything about asking customers what they liked or doing any kind of taste test sampling with real live people, AKA customers. Just some high priced food scientists trying to justify their jobs!

I wish i could find another iced tea THAT TASTED AS GOOD AS THIERS DID...... The closest i found is 4C but they use slightly different ingredients which throws the taste off from Liptons a little.... (DONT LIKE IT AS MUCH)

Now 4C also has maltodextrin in thier Iced Tea BUT NOT IN THE REG MIXs!! (It doesnt belong there, they are sugar sweetend products!!)

http://www.4c.com/documents/products.html

Look at thier reg mixs then look at the LIGHT mixs (They have maltodextrin)

Thier light mixs ARE ACTUALLY BETTER then liptons as they dont have aspertame in them!! (Surprisingly)

If they only used the exact same ingredients as lipton uses,I WOULD HAVE MY ICED TEA BACK!!! (Thiers is good but not quite as good as liptons WAS)

Im quite dissapointed in lipton!! (They used to be a good company that put out good stuff)

I emailed them one more time with the above site and said PLEASE DONT REPLY TO ME UNTIL YOU REALISE I AM RIGHT.... (STILL NO REPLY A WEEK LATER,THEY WONT ADMIT IT TO ME)

The reg tea mix was only sweetend WITH SUGAR,there was no maltodextrin in it until they changed thier provider.... (Used to be done in Canada and they switched to a USA distributor (Thats when Maltodextrin was added to reg lemon instant mix)

There is no talking to them.... Companies think they can treat ppl like crap and there is next to no getting anything back (If they make stupid changes, etc) -- There have been a couple times i have gotton good responses from companies BUT NOT VERY OFTEN..
