Either your camera suddenly developed water spots for only one photo, or MFL & Co. are haunted...I see at least 13 orbs in that pic.

It wouldn't be a RoadFood Eat & Greet without a surprise stop.  Out proximity to Gilles Frozen Custard Stand made it an obvious last stop of the day.

Spiral bacon?

Those Things?

Those things!!!

I hope Buddy Roadhouse enjoyed those quarts of frozen custard his family bought for him.  Mmmmmmmmmmmm, Smores!!!

That's a wrap.

"Pop"?!

I grew up West of the Subcontinental Divide.
Sheriff Joe will be the first to tell you that ignorance of our laws is no excuse.
"Pop" is someone you ask to borrow the family car.

What a fun time.
My 87 year old mom (yes, 87!!!) loved it and the company.

Yeah, that custard was fant--wait, what?  Custard?  Quarts? Family?

Hey, it was enough that you all had a good time while I was slaving away at work.  Plus, those pastries from LaReve did make it home and they were a fine pre-lunch treat.

Nice pix.  Glad you all enjoyed yourselves.  See you at Ilija's!  Really--31 people?

Nope.  32 is the latest count for the 12th of December.

Did the blood sausage make it to Buddy?

"My 87 year old mom (yes, 87!!!)"
You mean that wasn't your younger sister?

"Either your camera suddenly developed water spots for only one photo, or MFL & Co. are haunted...I see at least 13 orbs in that pic."
More likely it was camera flash from the paparazzi.

Didn't nuthin' make it to BuddyRoadhouse except those two pastries from LaReve!

And if you thought you were going to scare me with "blood sausage", I got bad news for you buckaroo--we ate that stuff every freakin' morning for two weeks at various B&Bs up and down the west coast of Ireland.  Also, white sausages which were similar to miniature haggis.  Actually not bad, not bad at all.

BR - No thought of scaring you with the sausage, I was pretty sure that you ain't afraid of no wurst.  I couldn't pass it up at $1 apiece.

The wood-fired pizza oven at Piccola.

You sure this isn't a photo of a Pizza Hut kitchen?

I would've loved to have participated but unfortunately circumstances dictated otherwise.  I'm definitely going to try to work in a visit to Pizzeria Piccola after a ballgame next summer.

Blutwurst
Well first Jim, it was worth every penny you paid for it.
Like Buddy, I've had black puddin' at many an Irish breakfast.
I've also sampled many variations of Czarnina, the Polish duck's blood soup.
I also know why kids don't beg their mom for bloodwurst sandwiches for their school lunch and why Campbells doesn't sell blood soup.
It's a texture mouth feel  thing. That and the extreme riichness of the product, coupled with not having grown up with it as a kid. The Usingers Thueringer blood summer also has somewhat unusual, at least to me, seasonings.
I'm eating and I'll finish it but I've got my sandwichs slathered with pickled hot peppers to cut that richness.
Thanks Jim. I'm going to miss your wicked sense of humor.
(I'm not a suelze or headcheese fancier either; texture again)

I wish I could've joined you all on the Milwaukee tour, but was occupied in that large metropolis to the south. However, yesterday I made it to Piccolo for dinner and enjoyed their pizza with chicken sausage, shaved celery, gorgonzola, provolone, and pine nuts. Such delicious, fresh flavors: thanks for the recommendation.  And afterwards I couldn't resist--I walked over to Le Reve for a few macarons. No individual pumpkin macarons were available, but I enjoyed one each of pistachio, peanut, and raspberry.

Well, apparently there was some kind of mis-communication, which I am still not clear on, and yes, JRPfeff did indeed send down a hunk of Blood Sausage which has magically made its way into my home this Sunday morning during a brief visit from abe_froeman and Mr. Maki.

So, a big thank you to JRP and the Pie Diva for their thoughtful gift.  I'll get around to digging into it ASAP.

Thanks again,

Buddy

I didn't know we had the blood sausage; Mr. Maki didn't know that I didn't know and he put the sausage away last weekend.  I went into the fridge drawer last night to make a summer sausage sandwich and found the blood sausage.

We closed my business for the first time ever!  Been over there twice, 9 foot drifts, getting bobcats and an end loader in this afternoon.  While roads were pretty good at 6am, they have re-drifted and are now virtually impassable except in 4-wheel drive.

I've lived out here for 11 years now and haven't seen any Scorpions but know people who have had them. The Pest Control people usually spray for them during their monthly visits. Most areas that have them are the newer subdivisions as the housing expands outward and the soil gets stirred up.

From the black light website:  "Since one scorpion can have over 100 babies it is important to actively detect them at night regularly."

Ann my Dear,
You must have played hookie from Geography Class too often. "East" ends at the Ohio/PA State line! That's where "Midwest" starts and actually, you're in the "Upper Midwest". Granted, you are East of AZ where it will be sunny and in the low 70's this weekend for the PGA Golf Tournament!

True Story - Chicago Blizzard of Jan 1979. I was in Chicago on business. Stranded in the hotel on Michigan Av. People were cross country skiing on Michigan Av. That's when I decided I'd rather be watching a Golf Tournament in AZ in January!

We can check another one off of our Bucket List.  Tonight I went to Burt's Place with Bobbi, Rachel & Martin.

Upon arrival, the first thing we saw was this young lady interviewing some patrons for a a cable program or maybe a foodie blog.  She was asking why they were at Burt's and what made it special.

She almost got away, but I made her interview me before leaving.

The first thing she mentioned was the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl XLV Champions cap I was wearing.  I explained that I am Senator Spencer Coggs, one of the FIB 14 fugitives from the Wisconsin legislature, and that I have been in Illinois for the last 10 days avoiding the bite of Honey Badger Scott Walker (it is alway OK to lie to the press).

She asked why we were at Burt's and was especially interested in the fact that we were an hour and a half from home for pizza.  I told that Burt's had the World's Greatest Waiter and that Burt's was on our bucket list before moving to Arizona.

She asked what made Burt's pizza special and I told her I had never had it.  I based my appreciation on Bobbi's and other Roadfooder's feedback.  Bobbi had mentioned the Italian sausage and she was right about it.  It is a sweet sausage that is extremely tasty and perfect on pizza.  I could go for a plate of it on its own.

I figured out the crust on my second slice, but after the interview ended.  There's the bready crust.  Then there's the cheese that melts over the crust.  But the interesting place is between the crust and the cheese - I call it chust or creese.  Something about the yeasty-bready crust at this interface that is not quite cooked because cheese was melting into it hits just the right flavor notes.

Our sausage, onion & mushroom pie.

Our pepperoni, onion & garic pizza.

At the end of the meal we were all happily filled.  The kids both really enjoyed the pizza and gave it high marks.

Sorry we didn't invite the Contingent, but Burt's is no place for a large group on Saturday night.

Spencer Coggs, eh?  If she bought that one she's really out of touch-and color blind, too!

Damn, I look terrible in that picture--did you have the instant aging filter on your lens?  Do I really have that much gray hair?  Yeesh!

It was great having you guys as our guests tonight.  Glad you enjoyed the pizza.  Still, no dessert from Bobbi?  I didn't think she even left the house without a pie in her purse.  So what were Kopp's flavor of the day?

Keep watching for a Contingent get-together in Chicago sometime in the Spring.  Lot's of dining ala trunk in sketchy neighborhoods!

I'm all for chipping in to get Ann to an eye doctor toot sweet! Mmm, that look yummy. We had just returned from vacationing in Jamaica and Beth gets called out of town for a family emergency, since resolved (I think) or we would have fought the weather just to shake Spencer Cogg's hand. Spring starts in just 21 days and I'm ready for a Contingent food feast.

Buddy - This one better shows your boyish good looks.

Bobbi felt bad about about not bringing a pie, but after we stopped at Oscar's for their Cupid's Creation Sundae she got over it.

"Cupids Creation"
This sundae is sure to satisfy your sweet heart or your sweet tooth! Imagine chocolate and vanilla custard topped with chocolate sauce, morsels of tiramisu', red raspberries, whipped cream, delicate chocolate shavings and a cherry of course!

Buddy - This one better shows your boyish good looks.

I'm sure Buddy will say that he was just taking a pizza order but it sure looks like somebody was calling in a bet for the fifth at Arlington...

Generous to a fault--although they coulda skipped a cash tip altogether if The Pie Diva had just brought dessert!

Buddy

P.S. Just to be clear; dessert tipping is not something I endorse on a full time basis--just for close friends, and particularly for those well versed in the pie making arts.

He said "tippers", not tipsters.
